so this is a 10" itouch that you can option into a 10" iphone that can't make phone calls without an app and a bluetooth headset that you can't fit into a pocket and probably isn't a good idea in a book bag either? kinda lame.

What I don't like is this device doesn't have appeal to people who already own an iphone and a laptop because it does nothing better than those two devices can do. It doesn't have the advantage of ultra portability like the iphone/ipod and doesn't have all the features of a laptop. Where is in incentive to buy it besides it being a cool gadget?

Something that Leo LaPorte just said is that it can easily replace someones DayTimer. For those people that do not want a smart phone so they still have paper planners, this is a perfect substitute. I know a lot of people that dont want to have a smart phone where everything is in one thing and still carry a paper planner.

Well after watching the event, I am thoroughly disappointed..

They claim it is a middle device.. when it does hardly anything that a phone would do, other than receive 3G data.. oh good, something I can do just by tethering my phone, oh wait that's still not supported. Can't text/sms. Can't make calls. I have no productivity software other than.... iWork.

I told myself it wasn't going to work without full OSX.. and it won't, because as most have stated.. Anyone really interested in this would have an iphone or similar, and would also most likely have a laptop.

It's not even that cool... it's a 9"+ iPod Touch no one should even consider this product and EVERYONE should be bashing Apple for even thinking this was a good idea. I mean WTF? We saw damn near a hundred tablets at CES2010 that were as good or better than this.

Why didn't they call this thing iBook??? Name the ebook app something else.

$500 starting price point seems highly palatable. I'll be honest though, I was hoping for some i5 based Macbooks since I'm currently in the market for a new laptop. For Windows stuff, I can just dual boot Win7.

Interesting portable device though. I can definitely see this used in education. Have a recording app and record lectures. Scribble quick notes.

Why the hell is there no 16GB and 32GB model with 3G?

No multitasking, no no flash, no GPS, blahhhhh. I really wanted this thing to kick ass. It can't replace my laptop and it can't replace my Iphone. It is a crippled version of both.

500 (really, 630) bucks for what is basically a symbol of douchiness. And don't get me wrong, as an Apple guy I'm willing to spend some $ to show off with my toys a bit, but I can't see myself justifying the money to read some fancy e-books and show off on an airplane.

Is it just me, or is this the dumbest product that Apple has ever introduced? All this is is an oversize iPod Touch with 3G.

What an idiotic product. For about an extra $150 or so over the 64GB version I could have more functional Macbook with more storage space.

I guess for every iPhone they need a Newton.

I said a few days ago that this iPad seems like it's going to be the Macbook Air of tablet PCs. I don't think I'm that far off. *shrug*

A comparable KindleDX (10 inch screen) comes in at $499 with only 4GB of storage.

Yeah, I was toying with the idea of spending some money today. But now I think I'll just wait for the next iPhone revision.

Some of their choices with respect to HD video are odd. The screen is sub-720P, so it can't actually display HD, only "higher"-def. You're going to have to scale everything down from 1280xHeight (depending on the AR of the video) to 1024x0.8*Height. It's only 80% of an HD screen.

The format support is also odd. It only supports Main Profile up to level 3.1; you don't normally use Main Profile with HD content.

IMO, this will be like the Macbook Air. Plenty of people will love it and get it. But, for those of us who really want it will find it underwhelming and missing a lot of features that we expected.

Believe me, I wasn't expecting a laptop replacement. I have an ancient tablet, so I know its strengths/faults. This misses a lot even on the tablet level.

Ooops. Missed that and posted after you.

Worst product ever for Apple, I didn't even see where you could use a stylus and scribble on it. Whoever though of this for Apple should be fired.

No word on multi-tasking. I'm beginning to fear for iPhone OS 4.0.
No Flash - how is that a fantastic browsing experience?
Looks like a brick, thick bezel and sharp-ish edges. From Apple? Really?

Is this thing for real? I mean, we do have 2010. Check out the Samsung laptop with a transparent OLED screen - looks like something straight from a sci-fi movie! And this? This will be a synonym for an epic failure for years to come! He's saying it's so fantastic... What is? LOL

I do not understand why everyone is so ready to throw this product under a bus.

It costs the same amount as a KindleDX, its base model have 4x the memory of the KindleDX, and you can actually do more than read books on it.

Amazons book store > Apples book store.

Reading on e-ink > reading on LCD. At 500 bucks I'll take a KindleDX over the iPad because if I'm looking for an e-reader it is a far superior product.

Look we JUST HAD CES2010 where we saw hundreds of tablets running droid or windows. This thing hardly compares to anything we've seen.

Ok Apple, tell me why I should buy this. Aside from being bigger, what does this do that my iPhone doesn't? So much for the most important thing Steve Jobs has ever worked on.

Mind you, this is what everyone thought it would be, a big iPhone. However, I would expected a tablet style netbook. Not worth it IMO.

If there isn't multitasking this thing is dead in the water. I can understand not wanting a full blown window'd UI, but I could live with only seeing one app on the screen at a time, and adding some kind of a dock at the bottom to switch.

With rumors of WinMo7 having Natal like gesture recognition, Apple needs to keep innovating instead of letting their platforms get stale.
