OK here's my problem.

Well, I'm actually not sure what your problem is :|

I guess you're trying to put a newer processor into the board. Which processor exactly is it?

Some 45nm processors work with these boards, some do not. Q8300 is not for example.

Well the correct award flash to flash the BIOS would be one way to help me. As well as the beta BIOS to get this Q9550 malay (not sure stepping)core to run on a IP35 board. Have the v18 BIOS from A-bits site. But wont post the Q9550. Runs a E8400 C0 stepping just fine.

FYI I'm trying to flash the BIOS w/a floppy cuz I'm 0Ld $k00L like dat

Thanks for any & all assistance.

Re: Scenario #1, my board and many other people's boards did this from day one. If it is a defect it is present on quite a few boards. There was no power spike when I initially received the board, and it is doing the same thing it did then.

Re: #2, yes there is most likely a compatibility issue. Different PSU was tried, different RAM, problem persisted through 2 video card upgrades and was there with a ~3W PCI video card attempt in the first place, and it is not the hard drive because board was pulled and retried with nothing connected but bare essentials.

I suspect the problem is the CPU, not bad but not truly supported but they claim it was supported a few bios releases ago and it is not isolated to people using only the same series of CPU plus anything worth running today would be newer, worth more than the board itself so I don't think it reasonable to make concessions around getting the board to work rather than using all parts known 100% working as they should.

From what I gathered at the time, about a year ago, the specific problem I and others saw was isolated to which CPU they were using. There may be other people with a general failure-to-post problem, certainly such a problem can have a lot of different causes, but only those with certain CPUs continued to have no resolution.

More than anything I was simply reporting that mine was also acting up again, and providing a point of info that switching to bios 18 may not only not be a solution but may leave someone unable to enter the bios menu at all so they should be prepared to reflash to a prior bios version if necessary. Mine is still running fine after having had to resuscitate it 3 days ago and not attempting to power cycle it ( I mean power cycle the PSU, system was able to shut off and turn on/POST by OS or case button fine, the problem was only if mains AC power cut out longer than the UPS could keep it supplied), so I'll leave it running while I contemplate what kind of upgrade that system gets (no rush, it's a secondary system I don't have to rely upon for anything crucial, and as mentioned it has ran flawlessly for roughly a year since the last time I had to fiddle with it).

My apologies for bumping the old thread, but this post helped me calm a bit after finding that I can't boot into bios after flashing to v18.
Flashed to v17 and it works fine now. My cpu is 2140.

Sorry for the bump, but it seems this is the best place to ask my question. Can anyone tell me if any of the IP35-E BIOS versions added support for PCI-e 2.1? I recently purchased a Radeon HD 5450 intending to use it with my IP35-E, but it turns out the board won't POST (no video signal) with the HD 5450 installed. I've verified that the IP35-E works with other video cards, and that the HD 5450 works in a newer system. I've learned that on most PCI-e 1.x motherboards, a BIOS update is needed to enabled compatibility with PCI-e 2.1 cards. Unfortunately since Abit went under I'm having a difficult time finding any information about the BIOS versions. I searched this thread for the terms "PCI-e 2.1", but no results turned up. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide!

I've no idea about 2.1 support on IP35-E but my system happily runs 5770.
I suppose 2.1 cards are compatibile with 1.x sockets though.

The 5770 is PCI-e 2.0. According to the PCI-e Wiki, 2.0 cards generally work with 1.0 and 1.1 slots. However, 2.1 cards have compatibility issues with 1.0 and 1.1 slots. BIOS updates are often required to make 2.1 cards work with motherboards using PCI-e 1.0 or 1.1.

Yes. They are supposed to be backwards compatible.
That's what I always thought, but apparently not.

I doubt it. PCIe versions are generally hardware limited to what was available when the board was made. I don't think a bios update will change compatibility.

But shouldn't it work. But only at pcie1 speed?

My GTX 670 is PCIe 3.0 and running happily on an Abit IP-35 Pro @ PCIe 1.1

I did get no video at first and the error code read "searching for Vga bios" and would not post. I reset the cmos and pulled the battery and disconnected the power for 30 sec. Tried again and it started right up like new.

Through additional searching I've also found reports of PCI 2.1 and 3.0 cards working in the Abit IP35-E. My conclusion is that compatibility is hit-or-miss. It seems to depend on the individual card and motherboard combination. I've found several reports of the HD 5450 not working with PCI-e 1.0 boards. I guess I'll try a GeForce 8400GS (PCI-e 2.0) next.

Just to follow up, the 8400GS (PCI-e 2.0) works fine in the IP35-E. I confirmed with PowerColor tech support that the 5450 is incompatible with many PCI 1.0 and 1.1 motherboards. It begs the question: What is the point of a budget PCI-e 2.1 video card? The main market for such a card would be people looking for something to throw in older systems (anyone buying a new system looking for low-powered graphics might as well use the IGP or get a mobo with an integrated graphics chipset!) Yet the card is incompatible with many systems just 2-3 years old! Wouldn't it have made much more sense to make this card based on the PCI-e 2.0 spec, which is nearly always backwards compatible with PCI-e 1.0 and 1.1? This is one case in which I should have paid more attention to the Newegg reviews. Usually I assume people complaining about DOA / non-functioning products don't have a clue what they're doing.
