After using this mod I haven't had a single CTD. I played for about 5 hours straight with no crashes. I used to crash every 20 minutes or so.

Practical indeed for those who have problems. I tried it myself and I still get CTDs though. What seems to alleviate the CTDs for my system (not "fix" them, just making them less frequent by a few hours so far) is to simply run the game at lower settings (almost everything on High, nothing on Ultra, Shadows to Medium, and no sky reflection from water, along with reduction from 8xAA to 4x).

There's something I find funny though. I know that Steam created that update to make sure that executables from games on Steam couldn't be modified, and they seemingly haven't done it only for (or rather against) Skyrim (have they? I'm not sure about that one). Now the thing is that all the details and information out there on how to make those third-party mods work, and how they bypass that Steam "DRM" update is just available for everyone to read. The problem is that imagine is the guys over at Steam want to reinforce the DRM scheme even more, all they have to do is read about how such tools/"hacks" function, and then make another Steam update to fight similar programs that try to bypass their security updates.

I have the feeling that it's going to be a long term cat and mouse game.

On a side note, where the heck is the Creation Kit for Skyrim?

I have only had one crash yesterday and none so far today,playing with game settings does seem to help,be interesting to see what Bethesda or Nvidia say about it,anyway the crashing thread over at their forums is up to 31 pages long now http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1270631-crashes-during-gameplay/page__st__600 .

Why is it so hard to level Destruction? I blast the shit out of everything with destruction spells and it seems like it rarely ever levels up.

I've got over 30 hours into the game and I am level 26.

I've got adept level tomes now. I just cleared a fort and it looks like the destruction xp bar barely moved.

Thanks much - this program has allowed me to play Skyrim without a crash for a few hours....

It would be nice if I could have a spell equipped in my right hand while I have my bow in my left. So I wouldn't have to keep switching to cast my detect life spells. When I'm not drawing an arrow my right hand is empty, it seems reasonable that my character could cast a spell with it.

Do skill points improve anything by itself without perks? If I have 50 points in Archery, but 0 perks invested in it, is it any better than having 12 points?

Absolutely. Weapons deal more damage. Bows I think also shoot farther/better. You're less likely to be caught sneaking or pickpocketing (sneaking). Locks are easier to pick and picks break less often (lockpicking). You get better prices and merchants have more gold (speech).

So two of you are using all 4 cores, where the general gist seems to concur its a 2 core game.

I wonder if the CTDs are tied to the amount of cores that are in use. Maybe 2 Core systems get over-burdened? Or some 4 core systems are only using 2 and thus become over-burdened?

Have you 4 core guys had many CTDs?

This is such a big difference I have a hard time believing there is no CTD relation. I mean, obviously there is going to be a performance difference as well ....

I'm running it on a dual core and no CTD so far. But I've only played 12 hours according to steam. It's more likely a conflict with some poorly coded driver. For example I had to remove Logitech drivers because they caused a glitch in Vista that would randomly organize the sidebar gadgets. Since I removed the logitech drivers the sidebar gadgets stay in the order I last put them in.

oh gawd i can't beat the red eagle tomb boss. so rigged. i'm level 5 and the boss essentially one shots me

edit: i just leveld to 19 and i'm still getting one shotted x_x

It bothers me so much that Skyrim doesn't have a simple dedicated stats screen that shows your character's improvements.

What's so hard about showing how skill points improve the bow range, speed, so on? The shitty Skills screen shows NOTHING of that nature.

Diablo does it well, even the decades old Final Fantasy 2 or Chrono Trigger does it well.

Armor up. Improving your armor is very cheap (often just 1 Iron Ingot) which gives 15% increase. Also spend perks on armor.

Shield goes a LONG WAY. Block-punt (hold shield button + press attack) is SUPER essential which stuns your opponent in their mid-swing.
