The 7th Sense is the mini-TeAm in the October SETI race that Actaeon and I our team mates on.
We are trying to beat a rival TeAm as one guy is offering us a free case mod item of our choice up to 25$ if we whup 'em

A few weeks ago someone replied to an o/c question with what amounted to pretty much a 'cookbook' for o/c'ing a 1600. Anyone remember it and/or know which thread it was buried in?

Thanks.

I'm building a new AMD based system next week

My question is... is it worth to buy higher clocked CPU (by default) over a 1600+. I know 1600+ are dirt cheap, but, would a 1800+ or 1900+ or even a 2000+ overclock higher than a 1600+???

I know that AGOIA an AROIA 1600+ get to 1800mhz and even more, would a 1900+ AGOIA get to 1900mhz and over??? Or not???

Thanks

AROIA i dont know what week or whatever got from newegg during the 1600+ craze
AROIA 10.5x175=1838mhz @1.775v
Epox 8k3a
512mb Samsung pc2700 @ most aggressive timings
Arkua 7228
45.5c idle/ ~52c load

^ this is what I am using at the moment, perfectly stable.

I tried 10.5x188 = 1974mhz @1.85v
booted into windows, can use computer ok, but is not stable. Will sometimes crash playing games and 3mark2001se

I tried higher and the highest i got to post was 10.5x194=2037mhz, but wont load windows nomatter how high Vcore was.

My XP 1600+ arrived today. Here's what I got:

AX1600DMT3C
AGOIA0212XPNW
Y8036480944

So that's AGOIA Week 12 Y? Hopefully it will overclock pretty well. I'll be putting the system together next week with these parts:

Epox 8K5A2
256 MB Corsair XMS PC3200 Cas 2
Thermaltake Volcano 7+

I can't wait to see how high it will go. I'll post my results here next week

It's a AGOIA week 12 Y alright. You should hit 1.8ghz without much problem.

So I purchased an xp2000 and the hot deal xp1600 from newegg. Basically, I got the both to the SAME speed, ~ 1.8 ghz 24/7 stable. I'd say go with the 1600...$50 cheaper. Time for me to try to return this 2000 then!!! yay!

Also, I'm very new to the world of OC'ing....i'm running

ASUS a7v8x and the 1600+ at 173fsb

So when I raise it up, after a while of course i get like a crash, and that blue screen of death. However, someone tell me, isn't that screen more of a memory (ram) error? (b/c of the numbers at the bottom that are like 0x002340234 etc.? I'm running some ddr333 ram that my friend said were samsung chips, but aren't. Maybe it's the ram? However he said he had the chip running at 200 in his p4 rig previously. Just curious, because to me this blue screen seems like ram issues (even with least aggressive cas settings), as the cpu isn't hot at all (maybe tjhat's my heatsink), and the mobo is obviously designed for 200 fsb. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

AlphaWolf829, I have the same Corsair module as you do, and an Antec 330W. I was not able to get my system to boot with the timings that you have set. Have not tried to up the VDimm yet. Did you also have boot up problems at stock voltage? Was increasing the VDimm the critical aspect to achieving those timings? You have risked losing your Corsair warranty by taking the VDimm over 2.8. Are there any other negative sides to having such a high VDimm?

mooo,I think that F stepping CPU you have is a dud.The only good ones are the AGOIA or AROIA "Y" stepping and some AROGA I heard is not bad but not as good.I have not seen any high overclocks with a non "Y" stepping CPU yet on the 1600+. Here is a link to another guy with an AGOIA "F".Looks like that CPU is a dud.

AGOIA F

I dont think so LastRide. As I write this I am about 12hrs into Prime95 at 166FSB x 10.5 locked.

Experienced instability at default voltage after 3hrs. VCore was dipping to 1.74 sometimes. After a scientifically conducted 3 trial experiment , I have concluded that the VCore was dipping instantaneously when I turned on the TV. Had to raise the VCore up by 0.025 resulting in 1.79 +/- 0.015. I am using a surge protector, but am in a old Urban building and the power here is quite dirty. CPU temp is at 46/47C.

I started tuning with memory timings - making them aggressive with the CPU at default values. Was not able to get it past the spec 2-3-6-3-1T spec; but, this was at default VDimm. Just dont have the guts to up the VDimm. What are the dangers? At what VDimm do I begin to risk frying the module?

Actually thats not bad of an OC with your F.You need to up your voltage another .025 to make it more stable.I personally don't like going over 1.85V and consider it safe.I would try this before raising your Vdimm. The voltage is what will make it more stable and run prime95 again.Raising your vdimm to 2.6-2.7 should be ok,but try adding voltage first.

I got my XP1600+ from Newegg. I was so excited that I didn't check out which stepping it was. I went right to 166MHz FSB so that I have 10.5 x 166 = 1750MHz. My A7V8X is telling me it is running about 60 degrees C during Prime95. Seems high but it's stable.

Okay, just completed 24hrs of Prime95.

XP 1600+ AGOIA F week 12

166FSB x 10.5 locked.
Vcore = 1.775V (1.79 actual); this is default + 0.025V.
Idle temp = 38~39C; Load temp = 46~47C

Epox 8K5A2+
Alpha PAL8045 + Artic Silver 3 + YS Tech adjustable speed fan (turned down low to reduce noise)
Antec Plus660AMG (TruePower330)
Corsair XMS 512MB PC2700 at 2-3-6-3-1T; VDimm = 2.576 (default)

Lets put a stop to the rumour that the F steppings are duds!

I am confident that I can take the FSB higher, but is there any point in trying to do this? From what I have gathered, there is no need to increase the FSB bandwidth unless the cpu itself is working faster (multiplier). I have also gathered from Anandtech articles that at current multipliers, Athlon XPs do not have any use for the 333MHz FSB bandwidth. Didn't know about this before I installed. If I did, I might have considered unlocking right at the start.

If it is true that higher FSB bandwidth is not of any use, would some please shed light on the point of increasing FSB and computing a value that is really not representative of performance? Yet people seem to be increasing the FSB as far as it will go to get a high MHz/GHz clock speed value.

Also, shouldn't people be comparing benchmark values rather than clock speed? Please see the separate thread that I have created about a Prime95 benchmark conundrum.

OC gurus, please post your thoughts and comments!

I have AROYA Y and I unlocked it with the defogger kit and now every other week the unlocking just craps out, it requires a whole new unlocking done and works fine for another week or two, than the only way to boot it is to switch to nominal multiplier and re-apply unlocking. Anybody else had this? Drives me nuts. It is not fun...

I have 2 AGOIA "Y" stepping 1600+.The greenie is a 0213 (week 13) and does 166FSB 1.74GHz at default voltage. It needs 1.9V for 175FSB 1.84GHz.The temperature is 33C at default 133FSB and about 40C at 166FSB.The previous owner used watercooling and reached 1.960GHz on 1.95V,a little to much voltage for my liking.I like to go no more than 1.85V.The 2nd one is a brownie I just picked up new at Neweggy 0208 (week 8).It does 166FSB at 1.80V and never bothered taking it higher. The temps on this one is a little higher. It runs about 39-40C at default 133FSB and 45-46C at 166FSB.I use a crappy Volcano 6+ cu heatsink and fan.I have an SLK-800 coming with a Panaflo "HIGH" 80MM fan.I like quite fans and don't want a big noise maker. My temps are pretty good on both CPU's especially the grennie.I don't really need a better cooler but I want that bad boy SLK-800. Both my CPU's are locked (10.5 multiplier default).

Or is there now a better way ?

Great going guys !!

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the Athlon XP chip and I need a little help understanding how to read it. The information on the chip reads(I know it's an Athlon XP 1600)
AX1600DMT3C
AROIA 0212UPMW
Y8015180400
What does this information mean?
What is the difference between the ARIOA,AROGA and AGOIA?
Can someone help me out, I surely would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance for your help

Thanks Last! I just got it today from newegg.com, I haven't tried to O/C it yet though. I'm waiting to see how we'll the temp holds up @ an idle speed and with a load speed.
Currently the temp @ idle was 46*celsius and load with quake III running it was 52*celsius.(Thats normal right!?)
What Temp should I expect running the fsb @ 166
The Athlon xp have made me a newbie when it comes to there processors now, but it will not take me long to catch on to them though!
My cpu fan rpm is 7500, it sounds like a little gased-up jet plane.......lol, I got used to it though

SEIX,is your chip a brown or green color?.I found the brown one's to run a little hotter but not sure on that.Your temps are a little higher than they should be but not real bad or anything.Did you use AS3?,it needs to be applied very very thin like paint. If too much is applied (thick) it will effect temperatures to be higher.Your heatsink may not be doing the job also if its a cheapo.I just ordered a Thermalright SLK-800 but its big bucks with a nice quite Panaflo "HIGH" 80mm thats suppose to work very well with it and quite and still pushes some air. With a good heatsink you don't need no big noisy fan like a vantec Tornado even though they work great. The Alpha 8045,Swiftech MCX462 and the Thermalright AX-7 are other very good choices at cheaper prices.Expect about a 5-6C increase in heat when you overclock in both idle and load.

Anybody have any input on this matter?

I just received (Oct 15) my AMD XP 1600+ from Newegg with the following core: ARNGA 02121PMW
It is a dark green color.

I was hoping to get the AGOIA model... but nooooo! Not me....

QUESTION
Do any of you have any experience with the ARNGA?

I've searched the web and can't find any meaningful info on it. I thought the "AR" would mean it is newer than the "AG", but I think I am incorrect.

I was thinking of Fleabaying this chip and then just purchase one from GameVE.com. I haven't installed the ARNGA, so I have no clue as to it's potential. I was hoping some of you may be of help regarding that. I don't want to "use" the chip before deciding to keep it.

Thanks to all!

Last, my chip is dark green and as for the cpu and heat sink. The entire thing is copper but I know copper isn't always better. The fan is an 80mm fan, I think I need a better heat sink compond solution though. I'm using some silver grease that I bought out of compusa, as you can see I don't know too much about cooling solutions. What is AS3? I'm not sure about all the thermal paste and grease stuff but any recommendation would be nice. This is what I have, I purchased it from a computer show.
Thanks for helping me out LastRide

(AS3) is Arctic Silver 3 thermal grease.I am not sure how good the stuff you have now is but AS3 is pretty much the best stuff.Hard to say how much it will drop your temps from your current stuff your using. You can first try respreading the stuff your using now.Whatever you use just make sure you apply it very thin just like if you brushed it on like paint.
