we love our 2013 volt. no range anxity and running on mostly electric. used 2 gallons to go from boulder to vail when we used to use about 6. and about 1.5 gal on the way down. once we have more stats ill let you guys know.

That's awesome! I'm curious to see what they're going to cook up for next year's model.

Do you feel that it's slow? I've read reviews that said it's a slower car, but my buddy who has one says it's just fine.

Our 2011 doesn't feel slow at all. The power comes on smooth and linear. In sport mode it comes on even quicker. It really doesn't drive like any other car.

You should take a test drive. Even if you don't ever plan on getting a Volt, you should do it just to see what it is like to drive an electric car. It really is a revelation zipping around without all the "sound and fury" of an internal combustion engine. Just make sure it the batter has a charge, or you will hear the onboard generator running, which takes away the fun of running silent.

I like the concept of the Volt a lot. I'd love a Tesla, but even being limited to 300 miles is kind of scary, and the Volt would solve that problem. My round trip for my work commute is typically under 50 miles a day, so if I could charge up at work, I'd be all set! The 2016 model rumors are looking pretty good as well:

http://green.autoblog.com/2014/08/12/what-we-know-about-the-2016-chevy-volt/

imo, the Volt is the most practical plug-in hybrid right now - great MPG, real-sized car, usable battery for in-town errands & short work commutes, non-crazy pricetag, etc.

What would be nice, and I don't know if the Volt does this, is if you set the GPS to someplace farther than the on battery range, it works in hybrid mode and doesn't go into all electric right away, thus saving you some battery when you get there.

There was a leak this morning on insideEVs regarding GM showing a focus group an EV with a 200 mile range based on the Sonic platform. It was pulled due to NDA violations, but it looks like they are trying to beat Tesla to the punch with a 200 mile EV in the $30-40K price bracket.

http://insideevs.com/report-gm-working-with-focus-groups-on-200-mile-ev-rollout/

This seems to be confirmed by the CEO of LG who announced in July that a major OEM has contacted them about producing 200 mile batteries for the 2016 model year.
http://insideevs.com/lg-chem-supply-200-mile-battery-2016/

GM is really the only automaker (other than Tesla) poised to produce an EV with a 200 mile that has close working ties with LG. Nissan is promising a @186 mile LEAF in 2017, but they do not currently have a relationship with LG. They source their batteries from AESC.

2013+ Volts have a "Hold" driving mode that does exactly what you are describing. You have to select it manually.

As an owner of a 2011, I am jealous. GM claims it requires a hardware change, but you can "hack" a Hold mode by using Mountain Mode which is very similar. So I suspect it is more of a software issue, and they don't want to update older models.

I took out a lease on a 2014 Volt exactly a month ago. My normal commute is about 20 miles daily. A few times I exceeded the 40-miles battery range. This past month I put on about 900 miles and used 6.9 gallons of gas (3 gal left) according to the onboard computer. This put me at around 130mpg. I haven’t fill up the gas yet as I’m still on the original tank from the dealer.

I was one-year into my Acura ILX lease and traded it in to a chevy dealer at a wash as trade-in was same as pay-off. The monthly payment on the volt is about $8 more than the ILX. The ILX’s onboard computer shows about 23mpg.

The Volt was $520 drive-off and $273 a month after tax. I applied for the $1500 California rebate for leasing an EV and was approved. So the state is paying me about $1000 to lease the volt for 3 years plus additional gas savings compared to my last car.

Driving it has been a blast. Off-the-line acceleration is quicker than what most people probably expect from a “hybrid” with the 270 ft/lb of torque from a dead stop.

Wow, that's a great lease deal - that's about what my last Honda Fit was after tax, awesome!

yes, the volt is acutally quite quick off the line. and I have no trouble passing people at 80 on the highway! we traded in at 05 outback and also have a seirra 1/2ton truck.

we really love ours. got a full size adarondak chair in the back once, and a med. size vanity cabinet another time. It really has a lot of usable space with the seats folded down. i actually love the buckets in back. i cant remember the last time i had 5 people in a car anyway, and the back seats w/arm rest and such are way more comfertble than a bench.

we figure right now we are saving about 150$ a month in gas, and it will be around $300 (about the payment) when i start my new job in a few months. I will have a 60 mile commute and it will save heaps over my truck.

make sure to do a lot of research on the I3. it cant drive itself over city speeds with the range extender, you really cant use it for a long highway trip.

My wife and I drove the i3 yesterday. I must say it exceeded our expectations. They are a blast to drive, which I wasn't expecting.

Yes, I'm fully aware of it's limited range, however both she and I rarely make unplanned long highway trips. And if we did, there's plenty of rental car companies around and family members I could borrow a car from.

The attractive thing about an i3 (or 2 that we are seriously considering) is that after the solar panels are installed, I will be able to charge 2 cars and zero out my electric bill, with plenty of margin. With 2 i3's the solar panels are paid off in 3 years by utility and gas savings alone.

That makes renting a car an easy compromise, especially for $30/day.

Yeah, right now there are really only 3 cars I'd consider with electrical powerplants:

1. Tesla
2. Volt
3. Upcoming Volvo XC90

The Tesla is $70k to $120k+ and still only goes 300 miles max. XC90 is pretty crazy (400HP 2L supercharged turbocharged hybrid). The Volt seems like the best combination of price & features; it's really the only one I'd feel really comfortable owning as my "only" car since you can keep going on gas after the battery runs on.

More info on the Kia Soul EV:

http://green.autoblog.com/2014/09/11/kia-soul-ev-priced-at-33700-leases-start-at-249-month/

* $33.7k (base) or $35.7k (plus)
* Plus model (extra $2k) gets you leather-trimmed heated/ventilated seats, fog lamps, power-folding mirrors
* 6.6-kW charger, nav system, rear camera, UVO entrainment
* Official range of 93 miles (27-kWh li-ion battery pack)
* $2k down, $249/mo lease available
* Initial only in select California areas; eventually coming to Oregon, NY, NJ, and Maryland

$249 is awesome for a lease. I've had two Souls and they are great little utility cars; having it electric would be even better. If they offered it in CT & if I could charge up at all of the places I work, I'd definitely go for it!

Lexus has a pretty good anti-EV, pro-Hybrid ad:

http://green.autoblog.com/2014/09/09/lexus-attacks-evs-again-in-new-ad/

Well, they're not wrong...

The add is FUD. The "facts" may not be wrong, but they are distorted and exaggerated. EVs are not for everyone, but they are perfect for people who can live within the limitations. Which is true of every car when you think about it.

Toyota has put all their eggs into one basket (well technically 2). Prius Hybrid tech and Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered cars. With EVs gaining more traction, and more models hitting showrooms every year, Toyota is trying to slow down their loss of market share until they can start pumping out Fuel Cell cars.

It's weird Toyota is so anti-EV considering they still used the Rav4 EV to boost cafe standards (however you'd word that):
http://www.toyota.com/rav4ev/

They built the RAV-EV to comply with Zero-Emissions Vehicle requirements in CA. They were never intended to be a Toyota EV. Just a compliance vehicle. That is why there is little to no marketing or promoting of the car.

This is also why most EVs are only sold in CA and OR. They are not money makers for the auto manufacturers, and they have no interest in selling them nationwide.
