sniper and uber are two different people. the sheep thing was a coincidence.
the one that ended in an 'o' was a typo that i didn't think went through because it came up with an error screen so i tried a new link. if there's a way to delete it so someone else can have it i will.

Thank you very much. This is what it says in the invite section.

Because we're currently only offering Gmail as part of a preview release and limited test, we don't have details on when Gmail will be made more widely available.
As we make way for more accounts, we may periodically allow you to invite others to join Gmail. When we do so, you will see an invitation link in your inbox.

If you do not see the invitation link, that means that we are unable to provide you with additional invitations at this time.

To invite someone, click on the 'Invite a friend to join Gmail!' link in your inbox. You will then be asked to provide an email address and a personalized message to your invitee.

The person you invite will be sent a message that includes a link to join Gmail. That registration link will be valid for three weeks and can be used to create only one account.

Should your invitee have problems creating a Gmail account, please let us know by clicking on the 'contact us' link in the grey box below.

Please note that the link may not always be available. When you are allowed to invite others to join Gmail, the number of invitations that you can send will be indicated at the top of the page after you click on the link. Once you have used all of those invitations, we will not be able to immediately issue more invitations.

invites seem to be "when google decides to send them" I had an account pretty early (friend who got in on the original thing sent an invite with one of her first two) and it was weeks before I got a chance to invite anyone. then I got three, and one of the people I invited got several batches of 3 invites before he ever even sent or recieved an email from his account. I got batches of three invites at the same time he did.

Anyone know whats going on with gmailmachine.com?? I've been trying yo get on it for two days now and no luck. I'm a long time lurker who finally joined here, so I didnt want to ask for an invite. I will spread the wealth back here if I do ever get an account though.

It's pretty funny, but Gmail doesn't send to Hotmail; or maybe it's that Hotmail doesn't accept from Gmail. Either way, messages sent from my Gmail account destined for my Hotmail account are never heard from again. Test messages to other accounts, including @msn.com, do work. Interesting.

inside gmail help...
"Dormant accounts are email accounts that have not been logged into for an extended period. If the account owner doesn't log in for nine months, Google will delete all messages in the account, close the account, and recycle the username. Other free web-based email providers delete dormant accounts after as few as 30 days. Please note that if you have a dormant account that is deleted, Google cannot guarantee that you will be able to use your previous username again once it has been recycled."

so it looks like u might be able to give it back...

no. that just means that if someone else gets an invite after he deletes his account, they can use the username he deleted
