Well, don't forget - even if you're sitting on your roof, floating downstream, being photographed by a news helicopter, we expect that you'll still be posting to ATOT. Here's hoping it won't come to that.

at the very least he better have a big "fuck you ATOT" sign!

edit: i really do hope people do get out this time.

She's between Shreveport and Monroe - it looks like the hurricane is headed right her way. Now we don't have hurricanes in Ohio, so she's probably freaking out right now. Assuming it's a Cat 3/4 when it hits land, how bad will it be when it gets farther north?

Ouch that's rough. Alot of people from my neck of the woods, Lafayette and south of us, head up to that area to ride out the storm. She won't have it as bad as the people to the south of her.

This should be fun, since its my first real hurricane, too. We don't get too many baddd storms up in the New Jersey area.

I'll do my best to post to AT during the storm. As long as my phone or laptop works, i'll be posting away.

I just left Slidell, Louisiana a month ago, but my parents are still there. I hope they will be okay...

Just saw about 50 school buses and another 50 greyhound type buses headed toward LA. Guess they are going to be more prepared this time around.

MrBond, check out this map. That's the NOAA's 5-day forecast path for Gustav, showing where they predict it's going, and what strength it'll be when it gets there. Chances are she'll see some pretty decent wind, and some heavy rain, if that path holds true.

Best of luck to her!

Yeah, I'm real worried about my apartment and all the electronics in it.... xbox, 360, reciever, LCR speakers, subwoofer, projector, 3 computers and dvds.. and other misc good stuff.

I just left Laffy and went to Opelousas, which is twenty miles north of it... a pretty boring drive with the traffic, people are getting the helll out of dodge.....

I'm starting to worry a little bit.. but looking at some of the 5 day tracks, my best bet was to head to Tennessee and do the Bourbon trail this weekend instead of staying in the South.

Mayor Ray Nagin late Saturday warned that Gustav is the "mother of all storms" and ordered a mandatory evacuation for the West Bank of New Orleans for 8 a.m. Sunday and noon for the East Bank.

"We want 100 percent evacuation," said Nagin. "I has the potential to impact every area of this metropolitan.

Katrina had a footprint of about 400 miles, he said. Gustav is about 900 miles and growing, Nagin said.

"This is worse than a Betsy, worse than a Katrina," Nagin said.

The mayor speculated that Gustav is so fierce Baton Rouge likely will experience 100 mph winds.

"You need to be scared and you need to get your butts out of New Orleans right now," Nagin said.

Nagin said he expects Gustav to "punch holes in the Harvey Canal," which will cause the West Bank to become a bath tub.

The West Bank has 8-foot-high to 10-foot-high protection, he said. Gustav's storm surge may be 15-, to 18- to 24-feet high.

Anyone who opts to remain in New Orleans "will be on your own," Nagin warned, adding that services will not be available.

Anyone who opts to remain in New Orleans is an idiot. But, there are probably some people thinking "Man, we missed out on all the awesome looting last time. Lets stick it out this time. Maybe we can get a new plasma television." They should announce right now, "anyone caught looting will be shot on sight." The last forecast I saw from NOAA said it could hit Cat 5 before landfall.

Can somebody explain to this flatlander what exactly the "surge" of a hurricane is? What does the 24 feet height mean?

It's like a sunami. The ocean level will rise 24' and the waves will crash into buildings causing them to collapse.

I live in Houston so I heard quite a bit about storm surge when Rita threatened us a few years ago, and then of course it's coming up again as we are still in the cone of uncertainty with Gustav.

Basically as I understand it, storm surge is the amount of water that is pushed onto land as a result of the high winds caused by tropical systems. I believe that I read that Katrina produced a storm surge of 30 feet, which is enormous. If they are really thinking Gustav could produce up to 24 feet, it would mean an absolute disaster for wherever it hits. A surge like that will level pretty much anything in its immediate path.

It's not the wind itself that's deadly, it's what's IN the wind, like tree parts or the neighbors lawn furniture that hits your coconut @ 100MPH!. During Charley we sneaked onto our porch and watched as the power grid fried, dozens of huge flashes as transformers and lines were taken out. Then a 95MPH gust would bend trees like tooth picks and send us scurrying back inside..

Why is the government failing? Maybe, people shouldn't live where they can't protect themselves from life threatening weather?

Yes, it's a completely different world.

I think I'm staying. My neighborhood is here (centered). I have plenty of resources and I'm about 7-8 meters above sea level. Fortunately for us the storm has turned. Before they had it literally going over my house. I will post a lot of pics after the storm.

Obviously if you live in southern Louisiana, you need to get the fuck out of dodge. That's right, I post things I'd never say.

So the entire West Coast is out because of earthquakes and tsunamis? If my house is destroyed, I'm moving, either to St. Louis or Colorado, depending on where I can get some work.

Well, you all stay safe. I don't know if you get New Orleans news, but they are freaking out.
