Well, you all stay safe. I don't know if you get New Orleans news, but they are freaking out.

I got that impression, especially in the laffayette area. They aren't taking any chances when it comes to the storm.

I drove out of Laffy to Opelousas Sat. night around 6ish central time, and you could sense some tension and stuff in the air around ya.. plus all the cars that were heading North on hwy 90 via I-10, I-49 area. Driving tonight was fun; traffic was moving, but i can't imagine it with more cars on the road, especiallhy once they begin the contra flow.... i think the roads are going to look like sllow moving parking lots.

I-10 East-bound is a parking lot here in MS. Lots of Louisiana drivers trying to stop here for gas, but we've already used it all up! Man, there is no way I would buy a house in New Orleans. No freaking way.

It's not the wind itself that's deadly, it's what's IN the wind, like tree parts or the neighbors lawn furniture that hits your coconut @ 100MPH!. During Charley we sneaked onto our porch and watched as the power grid fried, dozens of huge flashes as transformers and lines were taken out. Then a 95MPH gust would bend trees like tooth picks and send us scurrying back inside..

I think I'm staying. My neighborhood is here (centered). I have plenty of resources and I'm about 7-8 meters above sea level. Fortunately for us the storm has turned. Before they had it literally going over my house. I will post a lot of pics after the storm.

Obviously if you live in southern Louisiana, you need to get the fuck out of dodge. That's right, I post things I'd never say.

Well, good luck. For what it's worth (because I haven't looked at where the hurricane is headed lately), the storm surge is not the worst in the path of the hurricane - it's worst to the right of the hurricane as it hits shore. And, since someone asked above, generally the storm surge does more damage than the winds in the hurricane.

Yes, this is a good point and something that any hurricane newbies along the coast need to realize. Since this thing is going to hit around Cocodrie, LA, there's going to be some huge surge on the West Bank of New Orleans. Our surge is supposed to be 4-6 meters here in Diamondhead. Good thing my flood insurance is only like $300/yr!

Jesus. What people don't remember about Katrina is that the New Orleans didn't get the worst part of the storm. Mississippi was in the worst part, the northeastern quadrant. If the projections hold true, New Orleans will be in the worst part of the storm. NO could be fucked up MORE this time...

Look at the models, most of them how NOLA getting it real bad.

Yeah, SW Mississippi grumbles sometimes because the media makes it out like only New Orleans got damaged during Katrina. Waveland, MS was *obliterated*. What happened in New Orleans pales in comparison.

Actually, the Fox 8 people in New Orleans are talking about that now. I have a bad feeling that Gustav might be the death knell for my area. Even if people want to come back, I don't know that the government is going to want to spend another $50 billion on rebuilding. I still see Katrina damage every single day.

I'm about 1.5 miles in from Bay St. Louis and less than a half mile from the Jourdan River. During Katrina they went 8 days without water and 14 without power. I evacuated and actually came back a few hours after the power came back on.

Checked out the pics, dude, you should consider leaving if it's possible, if not gas and ice will be the new form of currency, make sure you have both. Keep an eye on the generator as these get stolen quickly. One thief went up to a running genny with an old (but running) lawnmower and stole it, the owner didn't notice the theft as the lawnmower running disguised the deed..

Just a glance, but what if tropical storm Hannah decided to strengthen into a hurricane and follow Gustav right through the Louisiana coast?! :Q

hanna is forecasted to go southwest a little more then turn back to the NW, possibly getting us here in the carolinas.

and back in the mid to late 90s we got hit 2-3 times a couple of years so it seems to come in cycles.

I'd suggest staying, because dont want to miss the welfare checks. Government runs everything good, even during hurricanes when the city has evacuated, the mail will still be delivered.

I think you should highly consider evacuating. The track and intensity for Gustav are far from nailed down and your location certainly does not look ideal to shelter even a Cat. 3. Solely my recommendation and opinion. You will do yourself no favors by staying. You are only a half a mile from the river and very close to Bay St. Louis. Surge can still get to your location, and flash flooding in the river and your area could be a major issue as well. Add in winds and the sheer misery that will come about after, I must ask you why you are considering staying?

I wish the best for everyone down there... and for all of my immediate family in Baton Rouge. My parents actually were up here on vacation visiting me during Katrina, but no such luck this time. I hope I can get through to them on the phone today.

I had our home all bundled up for a Cat 2 that hit us and that was a very long night. I can't even imagine the exponentially worse effects a cat 4/5 would do.
