Best wishes

I see you are staying.

Looks like winds will be sustained around 100 mph in your quadrant for quite a long time (at least 6-8 hrs) since it is a slow mover.

Stay clear of trees to the south of your house.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/wea...new.orleans/index.html

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- On a cigarette break from washing dishes in the French Quarter, Michael Kennedy swung open the door of Café Maspero, and the briny smell of raw shrimp followed him outside.

You gotta make as much money as you can, because when we shut down -- and we're gonna shut down -- that's it for a long while," the 26-year-old said, exhaling, a dribble of sweat rolling into his mouth.

"The thing is," he continued, "most people don't have cars to leave, don't have money for gas. Pay for a hotel for that long? I mean, you have to do whatever you have to do, and I guess I'm gonna stay and work."

Though Maspero wasn't doing half the business it usually does, customers were still coming in for $2 clam buckets. A few packs of tourists, identifiable by their slightly off-kilter walk and gigantic hot pink test tubes of booze, ambled down St. Louis Street, peeking into bars and asking, "You still open?"

Most were, up until the hour that Mayor Ray Nagin told the public to run for their lives.

"It's the storm of the century," he said.

But Kennedy can't and others just won't leave. They are the few residents who did not make the tortoise crawl down Interstate 10 on Saturday. iReport.com: Do you plan to evacuate? Tell us

"If I left, I'll probably lose my job," said Jeremiah O'Farrell, another dishwasher who is staying put. "I really don't have anywhere to go if I could leave. I could go home, but that doesn't seem like the thing to try. Too far, I guess."

Really, how bad do you think it's gonna get?" he asked. "I've never been through one, and I'm not sure what to believe. You see the national weather people, and they're telling you it's gonna be really bad."

"Aw, it's gonna turn!"

That confident pronouncement comes from Russell "I've-seen-some-hurricanes-so-don't-tell-me-nothing" Gonzalez. He's been making muffaletas at Maspero since 1985.

"I don't leave for nothing. I didn't even leave for Katrina," he said, letting that fact hang in the air for a beat for the benefit of several other young men who have gathered for a smoke.

"I mean, look at the local weather guys, they know what they're doing, not those Weather Channel people. The local people say it's gonna move north, and that's enough for me."

ugh damn. so instead of spending money or asking for help BEFORE it moves they are willing to stay. fuck if they stay they deserve NOTHING no emergancy visa cards, no goverment trailers NOTHING.

fuck em.

I find that hilarious that tourists still try to go there.

My sympathies to those that are in its path.
I know it has to be hard to face another hurricane after just getting back on your feet from katrina.
My brother got flooded out once from a river overflowing so he bought land in another area and within a few years that land flooded too. It gets really frustrating when you have to keep rebuilding and never have a real sense of safety.

no shit. I have no money helping those in need. but this is silly. there is ways out all they have to do is take them.

I had sympathy with katrina (untill some of them started asking for insane stuff like new houses built..even when they were renting) but this is silly.

as for the tourist? hope they get to see it close up firsthand and get washed otu to sea.

It looks to be weakening. I cant recall, what category was Katrina when it made landfall?

There's precedent: during Camille (1969?) there were "hurricane parties" along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It turned out to be a major Darwin moment, as few of the celebrants survived the storm.

Looks like some upper level wind shear. It might even weaken more. Look at the cloud tops being blown off and the eye is no longer defined.

i'm no weather guy but it looks like it's strengthening to me, looks like the eye is trying to reform

I'd agree with that. If i'm not mistaken a lot of times these things rebuild the eye, during that period the storm weakens but afterwards its stronger than before. Go back to 2004, I think there were a few storms in the gulf that did that.

the hurricane hunters found that the winds were at 105 during their last run, but noaa still has it at a cat 3 rather than 2. right now it's over the loop current, but it's about to run over some cold water and will start churning even colder water as the gulf gets more shallow toward land.

Lots of wind right now in Tallahassee. We'll probably get some rain later on. Hopefully that's all.

I grew up here (I'm 26) and all throughout high school, we heard about Hurricane Camile. It destroyed a lot of the coast. No local has any excuse for throwing a party on the beach. The only reason I'm staying is that despite getting the brunt of Katrina, my house didn't flood and the thing seems to be turning farther to the West.

Gustav is moving 17 miles per hour. That is fast for a hurricane.

Yep, and for us that's a blessing. The Fox 8 guy was expecting 10" of rain in NO at the current speed. If it were going slower, it would just make things that much worse.

For us, it looks like we'll get the worst of it on Monday morning: Link

Well, I went shopping for some extra supplies in Opelousas, LA where i'm crashing at the GF's place. Opelousas is about 20 north of Lafayette, on I-49. Walgreens was closed up here, and CVS was getting close to closing. SO we stocked up on more water, 2 more bottles of wine, some soda, chocalate bars ( for the wine of course). I was also able to go to the ATM and get about $400 in cash and Daquari's

In other news, in running those errands, contra flow sectin of I-49 there was a low volume of vehicles... but his was near exit 18. It was mooving quite steadily, but there were not alot of vehicles heading north. I guess its worst in other part of LA.

Heh, I don't drink, but I told my friend that if we get stranded here for days, I'm going to get hammered.

I just got done taking pictures of all of my belongings and my insurance policies. I'm doing laundry and filling up old Gatorade bottles as "cold sinks" for the freezer/fridge. I also cleaned up the yard.

Do you guys think I should go get all of the garden stones like these and put them up?
