[11:07 a.m. ET] The National Hurricane Center says it does not expect Hurricane Irene to strengthen before it makes landfall in North Carolina. In its 11 a.m. ET update, Irene had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph with higher gusts. Irene is a Category 2 hurricane. Category 2 storms have winds of 96 mph to 110 mph. Winds of that speed are described as extremely dangerous and capable of causing extensive damage.

Germans? What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
With a cat 2 - 3 hurricane, expect power outages up to 100 miles from the center of the storm.
When Hurricane Rita made landfall in Orange Texas, the power was out in the Conroe Texas area for several days.
When Hurricane Ike made landfall in Galveston, power was out all the way to Louisiana.

My mom is overreacting. She told me to get plywood to cover my windows and make sure we have plenty of water, food and batteries for the flashlights....we are in upstate ny a long way from the coast lol. I think we are only expected to get 30mph winds.
Manhattan subways have flooded in the past.
The outer boroughs will most likely get ignored for days while Manhattan is ensured is up and running properly.
Albany, we call those areas you mentioned Western NY (anything Utica and further west anyhow)

You gotta be kidding me. I'm actually in Zone A. I do NOT ever see the water coming all the way the hell up from South Street Seaport.
Stupid Mayans were off by a whole year.I just realized... if we do get hit, NY would have been hit by an earthquake and a hurricane in the same week. That never happens.. The prophecy is true, 2012 is upon us!!!
Meh it's all upstate from NYC but sure, your mother is crazy as I doubt Albany will see any effect from this storm.
Anywhere outside of the 5 boros and yonkers is upstate to a new yorker.
Seems to me a hurricane is a decent reason to cancel a birthday party... or at least not show up for one. "Sorry, can't make it, hurricane." He'll understand.I think I'll probably be the only guy driving IN to NYC tonight from Jersey. Going to Manhattan for a friends bday, have a feeling I'm gonna be stuck there all weekend...probably will park in a garage just to ensure that any flooding or tree falling won't fuck my car up.
