Man, the stores here in Eastern CT are mobbed. I stocked up on a few things, but we already have most of what we need.

Already stocked up on water, food, basic medical supplies, clothing, batteries, pet food, SOME fire wood, and just bought 10 gallons of gas today.

To do:
- Charge all laptops, cell phones, tablet, etc.
- Do all loads of laundry / dishes
- Plug the bath tub and fill it with water (bucket + manually filling tank on toilet = flushable toilet during power outage FTW)
- ???
You didn't mention cash. If power is out, you can't use credit cards.

Also get a hard copy of your phone numbers, in case you can't access your cell phone or computer. Unless you have a phenomenal memory.

And discuss with your family how to connect with each other in case you get separated.

If you wear glasses, keep a spare pair with you.

Check with your neighbors - we're all in this together.

Just a few things I remember from Bob, Floyd, etc.

Anything north of Conroe is Yankee land, everyone knows this. How's the clam chowder? And they couldn't get to the US because we beat them with all those guns that were made in New England.

You're really making your fellow Texans look bad. I know a bunch of people from Houston and they're nowhere near your ignorance level.

Well, the tourists definitely came to Maine. I guess many are thinking they can take advantage of the great forecast for Sat/Sun and get out of here before the storm.

.....

That was exactly my whole point in my exchange with chowder head. We don't drag people around chained to pick up trucks of different color just because we are bored. We take offense to sterotypes like this since it was the act of a couple of rednecks in the Beaumot area. Just like I'm sure that not every guy in New England wears a rain coat, has a beard and goes lobster fishing every day, like the Gordon's fish sticks guy on the packs of frozen food. Stereotypes are what's really ignorant. Just having fun with the mutt. Now lets stop derailing this thread and move on please, thank you.

Check your gutters, if needed clean 'em (job I hate), they will be getting a workout. Time permitting mow the yard, this will make the inevitable task of raking up all the crap that will wind on your yard a lot easier. Don't count on cell service being available, even if every cell tower is unscathed everyone will try to call one another during and after the storm, networks can get swamped, get some propane (assuming you have a grill), gas grills are really handy when the electric oven is unavailable, Good luck.

Huh, it hasn't even started raining. GF and I just got back from Seaport CROWDED with tourists.

he's in NC..where there is actually a Hurricane.

you guys are going to get a tropical storm.

still the rain and possible storm surge could nail you--though since it seems to be coming inland, expect nothing too serious.

despite what the media and everyone up north seems to think, this probably won't be a huge deal for people above the M-DL.

I agree, Irene actually lost some strength today, no one in NH should worry about roofs being ripped off but those in flood prone areas might be looking at a problem and with already water logged soils from previous storms and trees in full foliage (catch more wind) there might be a lot of power outages and the since this will impact such a large area it might become hard to "borrow" other lineman from surrounding utilities..

Well, at least Irene's dropped to a Cat. 1. Shouldn't be much drama with that weak level.

Hate it, though. A hurricane would pick now to hit the eastern seaboard. Wife's father had a heart attack a day ago, got put into ICU this morning, so she's driving up to Cape Cod as I write this....she should be around SC/NC border right now, trying to outrun the storm. I'd almost would have wished she'd gotten more rest before leaving, but to beat the storm up the coast, and she's driving I-95 up, had to leave last evening.

Sucks all around.

If something weird happens and it manages to change direction offshore, it could pick up some energy and raise another level.

rare, but it happens. I think it will likely die out over land and the Yankees will be getting some really heavy rain over the weekend.

I've been watching this http://www.weather.com/weather/hurricanecentral/tracker,
They just made the projection a bit worse. Looks like it could still hit NYC as a category 1.

This is the biggest media hype I've ever seen.

This storm is gonna be the weakest crap that evacuated more people in the history of mankind.

It could have easily stayed a strong storm.

A low developed 300 miles from it on the east and dry air entrained in from the southwest and took the sails out of it. It's just a NorEaster now.

I just took in a feral cat, poor thing was soaking wet sitting outside my door , I just left the door cracked and he came in and laid on the floor and went to sleep. Later it got up , walked to the door looked outside then laid back down. I told him he can go when he wants, he looked at me like " WTF ? Are you nuts ?". Windy and rainy is about all it is so far, but I know how fast that can change.

this is ATOT you can't mention cats without pics

However had it strengthened and not prepared we would have a katrina situation. Better safe than sorry.

If you do and its not needed everyone says it was hype. If you undereact and it was needed the the government did it all wrong. Double edged sword....

Well, you have to remember a couple of days ago when plans had to be made and implemented, the storm was a Cat 3 hurricane and projected to gain Cat 4 strength.

Then again, that was a whole two days ago and it seems your attention span just isn't that long, given your comment. Try to remember next time that cities have to plan against what is happening and supposed to happen with enough lead time to effect the plans, like evacuating a quarter million people in one area.....can't blame them for seeing a Cat 3 hurricane that's supposed to strengthen and call for evac. of low lying areas and shutting down stuff that'd be dangerous to operate in such conditions, like airplanes, metro, etc.

We are seeing the media sensationalize this storm into something it is not. The media is driving all over Nags Head trying to find every shingle that is lifting and reporting on it. It isn't going to be a roof ripping event but you can't tell that from the media coverage.

We are going to get wind and ran and flooding but it isn't anything that we haven't seen from the nor'easter that we get every year.

Low lying areas are going to get flooded. Tree limbs are going to blow down
