You're such a smart guy, TridenT! Of course it's his fault he didn't know Apple was going to give away free cases before they even announced it! What a no brainer, right?

Grow up and stop shitting in every thread.

It is his fault for complaining about buying it and not getting a refund because he got it on ebay.

It's a legitimate gripe! I'm sure if airdata had known Apple was going to refund cases already purchased, he would have gotten it at an Apple store.

Yeah, the rules are the rules... but I'm not going to fault the guy for being a bit miffed about it.

So I find out I'm eligible for an upgrade to the iPhone 4 at the subsidized price. I'm still a little concerned about the antenna issue though, so I'm a little split whether it's worth it or not. If I get it, it won't be until September or October. Sell me on it IP4 owners.

Do you mind having a case? Frankly I think you should have one any way because the phone is made of glass, litterally. If so, then you are good to go. You can get one through September for free because Apple will give you one.

Otherwise, I think these are very sweet and include the "Full-Body Kit" that will protect the glass back on the phone pretty well. and also includes a custom cut side and bezel covers that will reduce any attenuation your phone might receive. Not as much as a full case, but enough that the antenna will probably not be an issue unless you live somewhere with horrible coverage. And I do mean horrible. Even in the worst places, I never had a dropped call even without a case. Some people claim that I'm the exception, but from my experience I'm the norm.

Long story short, I wouldn't even let it play into your decision making process - it was so blown out of proportion. Have you ever owned an iPhone? What phone would you be upgrading from? If its from say, a 3G iPhone and you love your phone - you will not regret it. Its everything you love about your iPhone with better battery life, faster everything, better gaming, better screen - and contrary to what some might say, a better antenna too.

I'm upgrading from the 3G. Forgot I took that out of my sig. Anyway, I already have the phone "condom" for it. Coverage is pretty good where I am. Rumour has it that Apple is silently fixing the antenna problems. Who knows.

If Apple was fixing the antenna problem they'd let everybody on the fucking planet know it's being fixed. No announcement means no fix.

Well, enough said then. Believe the media, or believe the people who actually own the phone. Talk to other iPhone users at the bar or something if you don't know of any personally. Simply look over the overly long threads on this forum - I absolutely guarentee you will find a common thread to all of their responses - and it won't be the same thing the media is saying about the antenna issues. Users love their phones and have very little, if any issues with the antenna

I notice all the time the superiority of my iPhone's antenna over my previous iPhone's. The engineering behind it might have a small "flaw" but the overall design is superior to the past phones, and even detailed reviews like the one right on this site (Anand review) say the same thing.

There's a thread in the Gadgets forum about it. Didn't read it though but that's what the title suggests. Just a rumour regardless. I assume they are working on it though.

Really? Seems like if they were "fixing" the antenna problem and they announced it, they'd get hordes of customers clamoring for a refund or exchange.

I think it's more likely that they fix the antenna and quietly slip this new revision into the supply chain while replacing phones that customers bring into the stores when they complain about issues.

As widely publicized as this is.. either one of those scenarios will get them tons of bad press.

1. The media shouts, "WE KNEW IT! iPHONE 4 IS DEFECTIVE"
2. A few select people complain and get exchanges which don't have the issue and they start talking on Twitter, etc... and the media will shout, "APPLE FIXED IT! WE KNEW IT WAS DEFECTIVE!"

So either way, I don't think they're doing anything. They will hand out cases and probably switch up the design of the phone for iPhone 5.

Yep. Best thing Apple can do is just say, "fuck you" right now. It's seriously what will get them the best PR. Even people like my mom know about the iPhone's antenna issue and she doesn't even know jackshit about phones! It's just so widely publicized... I told her I was getting one and she's like, "oh, don't you know about the antenna issue and some other problems with the phone?" I told her I did and that it wasn't a problem. She knows I know my shit. If anything, I'll either use kapton tape like Anand (if the antenna becomes an issue) and be rockin' the blingin' iPhone (I'll cut holes out for speakers, mics, headphone jack, connector, etc.) or I'll use a case or use the invisible shield thing.

Welp... I couldn't help myself. Was able to get a 16gig iphone 4 today at Walmart. I also don't use a ton of data, so I dropped my plan down to the 200mb one which will save me $15/month. Still not sure if I want to sell my 3G or hold onto it as a backup in case my current phone ever breaks, but who knows.

All I know is that the 3G to 4 jump is huge, and I'm pretty impressed. Now that you can set a background AND lockscreen background, the only things I really need to jailbreak for are SBSettings (a big deal), 5 icon bar, and winterboard for custom icons and SMS tones. When I set it all up I restored from a previous backup and everything seems to have gone fine with that. It ported over my emails and texts which is what I needed.

The camera is awesome and a HUGE improvement over the 3G camera, and the video recording feature on it is pretty slick. I doubt I'll use it much, but I may since it works so well.

Can't say anything for battery life as I just got it, but I'm hoping to at least get 2 days out of it as I could barely make it a day w/ my 3G. If I don't have to charge it every single night I'll be happy.

I don't normally listen to anything leo laporte makes, but he said that the iPhone vs android thing is just like how Mac and PC is. The iPhone is becoming like the Mac, very unified but small percentage and locked down, and Android is going to have a very high market share while being mostly open and fragmented. I see that being the case for sure.

Still want an iPhone 4 for now though. It's great even if it is on the down curve and it's pretty much the only good phone on AT&T right now. (My only choice as a provider because my parents use AT&T)

I don't see Android getting near the market share that Windows has. Windows has 90% of the market share... and the rest is split between Linux and OSX. There's no way Android will EVER get anywhere near 90% what with how many smartphone OS there are. If they don't get their messaging kinks worked out soon, they'll never overtake RIM in the business world, which we all know still has the largest market in smartphones.

Apple will continue to be held back by only having one device, but the biggest thing holding them back is being held to a single network. Once they officially split to other networks they will jump in market share again. I'm sure Android will take over again and stay on top, but they will NEVER have the 10-15 times greater market share that Windows has over Apple. Never... period.

Well dammit... my dedicated mp3 player has started acting up, now I'll probably have to use the iphone for my mp3s which I never planned on. Now I wish I had sprung for the 32gig version :/

I got the 32gig version because I knew I was going to use it for music, recording video, have tons of apps, all that... I plan to use the thing for music listening in the car. I doubt I'll listen outside of that though. I rather have one device to carry around globally than keep one in my car and then have my cellphone in my pocket. Better interface than most of these cheap mp3 players too.

It definitely has the best interface. I'm just a stickler for sound quality, and Apple doesn't offer a custom EQ. All of the EQs it comes with are awful.

I got one on Monday, and the issue is definitely there. I have iOS 4.0.1, and if I'm "holding it wrong", signal drops by 2-3 bars in about 20 seconds, but it usually holds 1 bar and 3G. If I'm in a weak signal area (2 bars), it'll drop to Edge and eventually off the network.

The important thing is that in real world usage, I haven't dropped a call yet. It is an issue while browsing, pages load faster if you don't touch that part of the antenna...

All in all, I'm still very happy with my purchase. I would've put a case on it anyways since it's kinda narrow/thin without one. It'll be easier to hold with a case, and won't slip out of my hands.

8:31PM Arrival scan (It moved a few miles to get flown out I guess)

WTF COME ON. It waited 16 hours to fucking fly away? It should have been 8:32PM Departure scan

Ugh... now I have to wait until fucking Monday for the thing to arrive according to their scheduled delivery date. Freaking bullshit. 2nd day air for the loss. They should deliver on Saturdays.

I received my 32GB iPhone 4 today and got it going with my existing small business account. It's very much like the iPad in terms of being a blisteringly fast, pretty, well-made device. I am coming from a 3G. Honestly I always liked the 3G and probably wouldn't have upgraded but for the way the 3G has become so insanely slow under iOS 4 (I am not quite cynical enough to think they did that deliberately as a marketing ploy, but I'm close). Functionally the big upgrade seems to be to the camera, as well as the overall speediness, with the gorgeous screen a close third. I will hold onto my 3G for a few weeks to make sure there aren't any niggling problems that would warrant a return, then I'll probably sell it.

Video chat works just fine without a phone. Without a camera, that's a different story. ^_^

Somewhat dumb/I should know question. How strait-forward is it to transfer apps I already own over to a new iPhone? Are they tied to the iTunes account or the phone itself?

Apps are tied to your iTunes account, not your phone. As long as you've backed up your current phone recently iTunes will automatically (with your consent) restore your new phone to the same configuration, including apps, as your prior iPhone.
