I finally assembled my K8NGM2-FID with X2 3800+ and Corsair Value Select (512 x 2)1GB Dual Channel Memory.
No, PCI or PCIe card installed, just bare board for now with XP Professional SP2.
Directx Version with SP2 is 9.0c.

Came with Bios 3.2 , upgraded to 3.5,
Currently running X2 3800+ at 2400Mhz,
C&Q enabled,
RAM at DDR400 with 2.6V ,
HTT 240,
CPU-NB 1000Mhz,
NB-SB 1000Mhz,
CPU-NB link 16 16
Everything stable 2 instances of Prime 95( over 8 hrs) at 2460Mhz, but finally settled at 2400Mhz just to provide some margin.

Now, the problems,

I have installed both latest version of Nvidia Video Drivers( v.91.28) and 430/410 drivers(v8.26). ( Did not install IDE/SATA drivers and Ethernet Firewall Drivers).

Problem # 1

When I Test DirectDraw ( in Display Tab ) with dxdiag( DirectX Diagnostic Tool), Full Screen Video with White bouncing box has lot of horizantal lines(green and blue??), white box is not really white either.!!

All remaining test were fine, including TestDirect3D. All video settings are default.
HD/DVD Video Playback is fine without any problem as such.

So, why is this problem and what does it mean? Anyone tested and got this problem.

Things I tried to fix the problem,

Reduced the CPU to default 2000Mhz, ( I know it should not be, but)
Increased Video Memory to 128MB,
Reduced CPU-NB, NB-SB to 800Mhz,
Reduced CPU-NB Up/Down link to 8 x 8,
Disabled C&N

None of the above fixed the problem. Any guesses? any hints?

BTW, I also added 80MM 5v fan to NB Heatsink to keep the temp down( it is 60+ without that), so temp is hovering about 50-50C with slow 5v fan.(So not the NB temp).

Problem # 2

I was trying to use RMClock, but whenever transition happens it hangs( not with default AMD driver), sometimes reboots.

I tried RMClock version 2.1 latest, as well as versions all the way back to 1.8, including some betas in between. I know the voltage settings are fine. But something else is goofing.

Any ideas? anyone using RMClock. I even was able to run Proc at 2400Mhz at 1.3v Prime Stable with RMClock, but when transition happens to any other step it hangs.

I also Made sure I am using RMClock power profile.

BTW I have been using RMClock on Tution Laptop for over a year without any problems, and wrote some basic guides about RMClock for Laptops. But this is first time I used it on Desktop.

Voltage is not a problem for each step, but rather moving between the stepping is problem. I prefer RMClock over AMD Driver because RMClock is much more efficient with lot of control for moving between various steppings( Multipliers from 5x to 10X).

Any ideas!!?

Problem # 3

Also, someother thing I observed, 4-5 large downloads (about 100MB) failed in between, just stuck there, no more progress using firefox or IE6!! Not always, but few times.

Same sites, files I downloaded fine with my laptop.

any tips would be highly appreciated

Thanks

1) I have the same problem, I first noticed it yesterday when I tried to use WMP visualizations in full screen mode. maybe it's the 6150, have you tried it with the 8.22 drivers? I will do that when I get a chance.

2) I have posted a number of times on this forum about RMclock crashing w/ this board and have not really received any info.

3) do you have the active armor firewall enabled? it has been known to corrupt downloads.

Version 8.22, you mean 430 chipset drivers? not 6150 drivers?

I did go thru the thread about RMClock issue, looks like it is widespread issue with no resolution. Posted in RMClock forum and waiting for Dimitri's response.

As I mentioned, no I did not install armor firewall.

EDIT:

I can confirm this. When I run the Visulization in full screen mode it happens too. Probably driver issue.

I was wondering if it is a wide spread issue with new driver!!?( or is it same with all drivers for this 6150)?

Can, any one else confirm this!!?

BTW, Ethernet issue I observed looks like related to powersaving feature of Network controller, after disabling that, I was able to download properly, but again I saw slowdown or pauses in between, but it resumed when I start browsing.( new requests).

Anyone saw this behaviour?

my mistake, I meant 84.21 not 8.22

I installed 84.21 instead of 91.31 and now I have no problem with DirectDraw.

EDIT: BTW there is a new ALC880 driver here, it came out yesterday

I have come to the conclusion that my biggest bottleneck in my system is my hard drive, I am considering getting 2 cheapo 80GB Seagate Barracuda's and running them in RAID 0.

Has any body used RAID 0 with this board? and how well does it work, are there any problems etc...

Has anybody used a Seagate Barracuda with this mobo? and how well does it work, are there any problems etc...

EDIT: I may just get another WD2500KS but I hear that WD hard drives have problems w/ RAID unless you buy slightly more expensive drives specifically made for RAID, is this true???

I would think that upgrading to a dedicated graphics card would be much more performance improving than going to RAID hard drives.

RAID-0 would probably only be of benefit if you move a lot of very large files (e.g. video around) because it can increase your sutained transfer rate substantially. Don't know how the Seagates scale in RAID, but I think some Hitachis hard drives can scale very, very well.

Thanks to avi85 for letting me know right driver version.

I can confirm this, 84.21 version driver does not have this problem. I am relieved, but also unhappy because Nvidia let Driver out without proper testing, esp major issue like this.

Hope they will fix it soon.

BTW, I got a confirmation email about bug in 91.31 driver from Nvidia

Response (GG) 08/01/2006 11:59 AM
Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.

It is a known issue in the driver version 91.31. We will work towards providing a fix through our next driver update release.

Regards,
NVIDIA Customer Care.

Hope, I will find resolution to my ethernet download issues( downloads pauses and hangs).

Setting up RAID: To set up an array, you need to enter the BIOS for the RAID. To do this, you need to press F4 (or something like that, can't remember off hand, but it does say on the screen) and the screens you'll get will be fairly easy for you to follow to set up a mirrored array.

Also, make sure you use the 430/410 Nforce drivers, not the Nforce 4. The current version is 8.26 (again, the first post lists the drivers and even where to get them).

thanks,
I did eventually install the latest 8.34 whql drivers, and got the system working, but the raid is still a problem. The only solution that seems to have worked for me was to install with raid disabled, reboot after enabling a single drive stripped array (ie, enable the raid but don't create an array iwth more than one drive), install the raid driver, then migrate the array to a mirrored array using nvidia software which takes about 12 hours in windows. what a pain.

I am doing that also, I am getting a nice bonus this month so I'm getting an x2-4200+, a 7600GT (probably a vf900 too), a new DVD reader (my old one is 8x crap), possibly RAID (either another identical drive or 2 80 gigs) and a new heatsink.

BTW has anybody used the scythe mine with this board? I noticed that CthulpiSS has used the ninja although he says that it is complicated to install.

I want this rig to last at least 2 years, the only thing I would consider upgrading again is the graphics card in like a year or so. Am I over/under-spending on anything? should I look at other things to upgrade? (I'm gonna upgrade my RAM when vista comes out) please give me advice people!!!

EDIT: BTW I'll be oc'ing the processor as much as the mobo allows.

Hi Batorok,

Where did you get this 8.34 version driver. On website I am only seeing 8.26. I could not find it.

I am also having ethernet issues with downloads hanging, may be this version helps.

Thanks

Coaxial, however, works beautifully! I'm going to have to reshuffle some inputs on my receiver to accomodate coax, but it's no biggie. I'm just glad it's working at last.

Before going the DIY route, I dug deep into Google on a search for the three-pin bracket this motherboard requires, and found two vendors who carry it, neither in the U.S. It's here at cyberport.de in Germany (that should help you, charger2000) and here at the Australian MSI site. I emailed both to enquire about whether they'll ship to the US, and haven't heard back from either. Of course, it's moot for me now since I got the Biostar bracket to work..

Great. I have no coax cable and an extra TOSlink. anyone have an update to this, why would they include a TOSlink connector on the bracket if it doesnt work? Anywhere else to plug it in? seems very strange to me.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I already waited over 2 months to get the bracket here, so I want to get it working asap, hopefully without buying a new cable.

I guess you already gone thru posts about why regular TOSLink brackets does not work with this MB. It is not just 5V issue, it is TTL signal lacking. I have Shuttle COAXIAL, OPTICAL OUT/IN bracket, which I have used sucessfully with Aopen AX4GE Max, Asus P4P800(which has only coax out). I have been using optical out all along to connect to my receiver. No I am out of that option. I added 5v VCC input from IR Header( made sure 5v available on the SPDIF board) as well as USB header, and also directly from Power supply. But that does not help. Basically it needs that TTL signal. I do not know why MSI/RealTek did not provided that.

Probably something like this will help( though it is external).

Speedfan 4.29 is out.

There're 2 config files currently:
Uploaded by WIZZZARD on 27 jul 2006
Uploaded by PLAHDE on 04 jun 2006

Are they different? If so, which config file should one use?

Thanks for the reply chinna. So are you saying TOSlink nor coax works?

Here is my new problem, I now have a coax cable. Still no sound. I double checked - the bracked is plugged into the 3 pin connector furthest to the left of the board ... SPDO1 or whatever... should be output not input.

I also installed the latest (R1.42) realtek drivers. No dice.

The sp/dif slider in volume is greyed out. I thought this was because you can't change the level, but maybe that is telling? I don't know.

RMClock Finally working

After several frustation attempts and hangs I finally got RMClock working stable( atleast for a day of testing sofar).

I was frustated by AMD powernow Driver verymuch as it is pathetic to switch to appropriate speed when required.

Ex: When I try to Play WMV HD clips, there are lot of pauses and stutters as it frequently try to switch between 5x and 10x. It is unusable for any HTPC app.( How wonder how come AMD can write such a bad driver!!).

In RMClock 2.1 , I set 5x@1.1v, 7x@1.25v and 10x@1.35v ( for now I created 3 only to make it easy on testing and enough steps too).

Assuming You all guys know how to setup RMClock, I am only giving Advance CPU settings I changed to get it working.

In Advanced CPU settings Tab, under P-State Transitions Settings

Set FID Transition Stabilization Time --> 100
Set VID Transition Stabilization Time --> 500
Maximum Ramp Voltage offset --> 75

That should help stabilize the transitions with RMClock

It seems VID stabilization is pretty poor with this Mother Board( I never needed to use that much stabilization time).

Here is the snapshot for other setting references

http://img429.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rmclockadvancecpukc8.png

This is with X2 3800, may be you need to adjust little more based on proc, also make sure that you do not load RMClock during startup until you fully tested for stability, otherwise you endup in a hungup loop.

Best of luck.

EDIT: Guys, I think it is still not completely stable yet. Because today morning I did a crash( after 30 hours approx) when my random testing of prim95 instances, I stopped two prime95 instances successively. It failed when It stepping down the proc to 5x. But typical loads has no problems with transitions.

In typical usage it did work fine. But anyways, sorry for wrong alarm. I will try to investigate and experiment more and let you guys know when I see real success.

COAXIAL WORKS, but not TOSlink with the TOSlink transmitter I have. COAXIAL does not have any problems. It is connected to my Onkyo SR601 and working good.

When you open Realtek Audio Manager, select Audio I/O Tabs and select "x" mark Digital section, it popsup a another SPDIF IN/OUT settings Window, select output digital audio sources.

Also, when you connected SPDIF bracket make sure Left most pin goes to Inner Contact in RCA plus, and middle pin is ground(so to outer contact on RCA plug).

Anyways, let us know if works or does not work.

Ok, it is just a 3 pin molded plug. So I should try to check the wires, by color I suppose, to see where they go?

It only fits in one way, so hopefully it is correct.

As far as the software goes, I do have it set that way, that is the default. output sp/dif to digital audio sources or whatever, the middle option.

very weird.... and frustrating.

Thanks for that great info!
which profile am I supposed to use, there are 4 there

EDIT: nevermind I figured it out, but how do you test it (you wrote: "at least for a day of testing so far")

Another EDIT: thanks to you I can now increase my overclock by adding 0.05 volts my only problem is that until the computer boots into windows and runs RMclock it is missing those 0.05v. now my question is whether there is a way to keep it at 1.45v even when not in windows (without installing bios 3.00). I noticed that in the management tab (of RMclock) there are the following 3 options:

Restore CPU defaults on management turning off
Restore CPU defaults on application exit
Use values found at startup instead of hardcoded CPU defaults

can changing these allow the 1.45v to be permanent (i.e. even when windows is loading)?

Is it MSI supplied bracket? if so then no need to test that pin configuration, because it can only fit one direction.

If if it is home made bracket, then check for the polarity.
BTW how do you know it is SPDIF out problem, not the receiver problem? Did you make sure it is configured to use right input on receiver( because most receiver have assignable digital inputs).

Also, it won't transfer analog sounds bydefault, like analog linein sound to digital out, or analog CD audio out they SPDIF. So you need to play something digital like MP3 songs.

anyways, I just mentioned these though, believe you might know, just to make sure we are not missing something.

And finally, if you have a Multimeter you can check if there is any voltage in spdif out(typically 0.2v).

Yeah, it is from MSI.

I had an mp3 on repeat the whole time i was testing.

COAX out to COAX in 1 and 2 both on my receiver, and I caged the input selection in the menu. although, I've never tried COAX on the receiver before, so I will try my HD-STB with COAX instead of TOSlink, or my DVD player.

There are definetly a couple different combinations I haven't tried, but not many.

This is just so frustrating because I waited for about a month before I got in touch with MSI, 6-7 weeks after I mailed them a cheque to mail it, then when the cheque hadn't been cashed I got in touch with them again and finally got it yesterday, about a total of 3-3.5 months. And all I want to do with this is play videos/tv recordings/movies (.ts and dvd) and just make use of my HT setup

Anyway, I will re-check the software settings, and the physical connections with another device to be sure they work.

Is there something maybe because I plugged in this bracket AFTER I had windows installed and was using just analog 2ch out?

Seems odd that it isn't just plug and play.

Thanks for all your help so far.

Very unlikely. That should not be a problem at all. Check the reciever as you mentioned with DVD Player and see if that is the culprit.

if not check to see, if there is any voltage output on SPDIF out with Multimeter( Bought one DMM from frys for $3, normally $10, but very handy).

Any one use ClockGen to get higher than 250MHz HTT?
I downloaded and It detected my chipset as GeForce 6100. However, It could not change my system clock. Is this working with MSI-FID board?

In other motherboard, my CPU could go upto 2.6GHz at default 1.35v and 2.75GHz with higher voltage.
