Dunno what else to tell you. ??

Maybe put up a Wanted Ad in the For Sale forum and see if someone who is only using the other included brackets will sell you the Athlon 64 backplate and nipples for cheap?

Thanks mshan...I really appreciate your input. I figured my options were limited, especially after tech support from Zalman told me that I was out of luck. I think I'll either RMA the cooler (since I just bought it last week from Zipzoomfly) or sell it on eBay. Oh well, you win some and you loose some! Thanks!

Anyone have any tips on how to speed speedfan up during logon? It usually takes 1-2 minutes on my computer (k8ngm2-fid board of course, a64 3200+, 512mb ram) before it fully scans the buses for the temperature sensors and lets my computer be usable.

Maybe I misunderstood your oirginal post. You said,
the fan does cover the first 2 memory slots but the fan can click right off the heatsink so it's not really a problem.
Do you mean that memory modules can be installed in DIMM1 and DIMM2 if the fan is removed and the fan can be attached to the heatsink later without blocking these modules, or that the fan must be removed permanently for the memory modules to sit in DIMM1 and DIMM2?

I jut wonder if you are satisfied with your freezer 64 Pro because i could see on a lot of forums that this cooler is a bit noiser at full speed and not really efficient where you switch to less than 12V.

Can you tell more about that ?

I have noticed that. when I use the bios to lower fan speed (target temperature) it's efficiency does drop alot more than it did with my zalman 7000. as far as noise is concerned, at full speed it is slightly noticeable if you have a perfectly silent case, but if you have a couple case fans then you shouldn't really hear it.
If you're looking for perfectly silent, this is not the way to go.

I have my video up and running on a RPTV and all is well. My only audio connection from the 6150 is the coax s/pdif which is going into my audio receiver. In trying to play a DVD with VLC if I set the sound to stereo I here audio coming out of my stereo speakers. If I try to listen to the AC3 (or whatever Dolby Digital is), I get a real choppy, hanging sound. Has anyone had a similar issue?

Thanks.

I have not seen any problems with SPDIF out(connected to my Onkyo TX SR601), I used with PowerDVD, Window MediaPlayer with Nvidia Decoder with passthru option. DTS as well as Dolby Digital both worked fine. I did use VLC, But I did not test with AC3. Probably VLC or VLC settings issue.

Chinna, do you like Power DVD. There are comparison threads all over the place for software players. A lot of people like Power DVD and Win DVD, but then a lot of people say the recent releases are really huge and bloated.

I guess what I was hoping for was a simple play that all it does is: plays. I am already set on backup, burning, etc. I just want a really good player. Maybe you have to buy it all I suppose.

Thanks.

Hi,

First I'd like to thank renethx for creating one of the most in-depth support threads I have come across and it helped sway my decision in buying this excellent motherboard.

Heres a quick look at my specs:

Hitachi TX100 1280 x 720p Projector
Athlon 64 X2 3800 w/stock HSF
MSI K8NGM2-FID
2x 512 Crucial DDR PC3200 (Dual-Channel)
2x Samsung SpinPoint 250GB SATA HDD
Seasonic 350W PSU
Nec ND3540A DVD RW

I received the mobo a couple of days ago and now I finally have it set up so that it runs 100% rock solid.

The main reasons I chose this board and the x2 3800 was for High-Definition playback, mainly the more intensive H264 high-bitrate movies and the upcoming HD-DVD/Blue-Ray tittles.

I previously owned a P4 3ghz Northwood system and it played everything I threw at it except the Marie Antoinette H264 1080p Quicktime tralier and the BBC's HD 'Planet Earth'.

Now after installing the latest drivers for this mobo, I can play Planet Earth flawlessly without any drop in frames using Core AVC codec, AC3 Filter and Media Player Classic with 5.1 DD5.1 sound on my Denon AV-Receiver and the cpu is around 65-75% (no overclocking). Btw, I had to modify my Asus SPDIF Out bracket so that it could fit into the MSI mobo.

Now here lies the problem I have (if you can call it that).

I have read this entire thread from begining to end and I still cant seem to overclock my cpu to 2.4 ghz. The most I can overclock to is 2360 ghz and if I raise the CPU-LDT Frequency MHz anymore than that, the PC just won't boot past the windows loading screen.

Here are the settings I used:

Bios 3.0

Memclock Mode: [Limit]

Memclock Value: [100 MHz] I have altenated from 100 MHz to 200 MHz
User Config Mode: [Manual]
CMD-ADDR Timing Mode: [1T] Have tried 2T
CPU to NB Frequency: [800 MHz] Have tried from 400 MHz to 1000 MHz
NB to SB Frequency: [800 MHz] Have tried from 400 MHz to 1000 MHz
CPU to NB Linkwidth: [16 ? 16 ?]
NB to SB Linkwidth: [8 ? 8 ?]
CPU-LDT Frequency, MHz: [240]
Processor Frequency Multiple: [x10 2000 MHz]
DDR Voltage: [2.55V] (default) Have tried 2.60 to 2.75V

Can anyone advise in what I might be doing wrong, or could it be that my ram is the bottleneck?

Thanks

Looks to me like your cpu is the bottleneck. My 3500+ will OC only to 2377 stable from stock 2200, although it would boot up to around 2450 or 2500. Some cpus just don't seem to OC well.

Well, I'm putting together an AM2 version of this board (MSI K9NGM2-FID) and am just waiting for the Maxtor 500GB SATA hard drives to arrive.

First, the board doesn't come with the component output adapter like the K8NGM2-FID (socket 939) version.
Second, there are not options what so ever for the memory in the current (release) bios.

Was nervous about the memory I ordered as this board only does 1.8v but it booted and registered OK so far, but don't have the hard drives installed yet to verify it's stable.
But the Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 do work so far, and the boot screen shows the bios sees them as 2GB PC800 dual channel.

These are the components that I've put together with this system so far.
AMD Athlon64 x2 3800+ EE (65w) CPU (wanted the 4000+ but it's discontinued) w/ Thermaltake mini Typhoon cooler (yes this cooler fits in the case without mods.)
Cooler Master Real Power 550watt SLI power supply
Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2x1GB DDR2-6400 PC800 RAM
Thermaltake Mozart home theater PC case w/ Media Lab
Maxtor Ultra 16 SATAII 500GB hard drive (x2)
LG GSA-H20L 1.01(RPC-1) DVD-RW
Yamaha CRW-F1 1.0g CD-RW
Cooler Master Musketeer 3 (silver)
Atech Flash Technology PRO-Gear Duo media reader/writer

HT2001, did you try to disable Cool'n'Quiet in BIOS or use RMClock? That will increase vcore +0.05V and may help overclocking.

renethx,

Cool'n'Quiet in BIOS is diabled and the increase in vcore +0.05V was verified by CPU-Z when I tried to overclock to 2.4 mhz.

Is there a way of finding out between the X2 3800 and the Ram which is the bottleneck from stopping me from overclocking to 2.4 mhz?

Btw, does the latest ForceWare v91.31 vga drivers work because when I install it, I can't seem to enter the Nvidia control panel and some playback with some HD material seems to stutter whereas the vga driver that came with the mobo had no problems - I do remember other forum members experiencing certain problems with this driver as well.

Whats the best vga drivers people are using for this mobo?

Thanks

Any of motherboard, CPU and DRAM can be the bottleneck. I recommend to follow Zebo's article to determine it as I mentioned in the last remark of the first post. ForceWare v91.31 seems to have several problems. There are lots of posts in Video Forum. V84.xx may be better.

use the 84.xx forceware, 91.xx is known to cause some problems with the onboard video

chetansha,

Grab the vga drivers aswell as the rest of the mobo driver directly from MSI and the system should run rock solid.

I just went into dxdiag and passed all the tests including video, sound and music.

btw, does anyone know if there is there a h264 hardware acceleration solution that is more efficient than using core avc 1.1 pro and can someone verify that for intensive quicktime h264 1080p trailers such as 'Marie Antoinette' uses between 60 - 70% of the CPU. The reason I ask is that as well as having rock stable driver, I hope that the vga 82.05 driver from MSI performs favourably compared to later drivers.

Just a heads up....

I haven't gotten as far as installing it yet, but it looks like I'll finally be able to install the RC1 build of Vista (that is build 5600). One of the main problems I've always had was getting it to install on the RAID. Now, without even using a floppy, setup recognizes the RAID and the partitions on it. Will post again hopefully soon and let you know the results.

Current specs:
Antec Sonata II case w/450 watt PS
MSI K8NGM2-FID
Opteron 170 @ stocks speeds with stock cooler
2 GB PC3200 Patriot DDRAM
Gigabyte 7600GT with passive heatsink
AuzenTech XPlosion sound card
3x320GB hard drives in RAID0
