Renethx, thanks for the reply.
It is the monitor.
Put another monitor on it, and all is well.
Going to RMA this one back to Samsung.

Thanks

How far can you push a 4000+ san diego with this board?

I just swapped my 3000+ Venice out of this board and replaced it with a 4000+ E6 sandy. The 3000+ maxed out at 2250 mhz, and I was hoping to push the 4000+ to the board's theoretical limit with this cpu (x12 multi) of 3ghz. I've seen that several folks on this board have the 4000+ cpu, and was wondering how far you were able to push it? I seem stuck around 2760 mhz (230 mhz fsb). I can get it to boot at 2880 mhz (240 fsb) but it's not stable. Upped the mem voltage, played with timings, etc (am using 2x512 kingson hyperx ddr400), didn't make any difference.

My cpu may be looking for more vcore, in which case I've gone as far as I can go with this board, but was just wondering what other folks have been able to hit (maybe I missed a tweak somewhere)?

Did you succeed in booting from an USB key ?
It works with a noname model but not with Corsair FlashVoyager 8MB.
With noname model, in order to work properly, I must tell BIOS (3.20) I have a floppy drive and put it as first boot device.
Is it normal ?

Thank you.

If you use BIOS v3.00 then you can increase vCore by 0.05v (see the main post)

The left and right channels of the front panel output are reversed. Do I switch both the left and right signal / ground channels?

Or something else?

Case is an Antec Solo and mobo is MSI K8NGM2-FID.

I think the audio connector is a keyed all-in-one connector, and not the individual or 2-pin connectors that you could swap. I think this connector is specific to your case.

Question for the experts: I'm rebuilding my MCE2005 machine and was wondering if the new BIOS's are worth the effort of reflashing. My FID board has rev 3.10 and I'm not overclocking, not gaming, not doing anything but running a std config. If it matters, I've got a A64 3200+, 1GB (dual ch), analog tuner, and would like to go into and out of S3 seemlessly. I've turned off CnQ. Don't care about HW monitoring. Does 3.50, 3.60, 3.7x buy me anything? And what ForceWare flavor of the week should I use? (currently use 81.98). BTW, after trying to update to 91.47 (I think) and changing screen resolution, my machine became so unstable that it wouldn't boot into MCE, so I'm forced to reinstall the OS. I've read up after the fact, and see that 81.98 is OK and 84.21 or 84.43 is OK, I don't know. Thanks in advance!

Uhh, I don't think you will find the MSI K8NGM2-FID anywhere now. It is extinct, like the dinosaurs or an old volcano. If it still lived I would've bought one. 8>(

If anyone is using this board with an HTPC, MSI has a 7600GS with HDMI for $130 that would be good with this board. It includes a cable to connect the SPDIF connection on the motherboard to the video card. It's low profile too if you need that. Should be good for an all in one solution.

One question though. I would like to buy this card and connect via HDMI to my TV, but I would like to split out the SPDIF connection from the motherboard -- One to the video card and one to my digital coaxial bracket to my receiver. Is this possible, and if so, can I buy such a 2 pin y cable splitter, or possibly build one?

Edit: Maybe something like this, but use 2 of the 3 pins?

I recently acquired a set of Boston Acoustics BA735 digital speakers from a relative. These are active speakers with both an analog and digital input into the sub, which then parses out appropriate signals to the two satellites. I assume the sub contains a DAC and then an amplifier section along with its crossover, or perhaps it just uses a digital (Class D) amp section. I am using these with my MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard with integrated Realtek soundcard. It has an S/PDIF header on the board that I connected to the S/PDIF bracket on the back of my PC, and that has a typical RCA connection for a digital signal out. There is a similar RCA connector for the digital input.

The analog input works fine. I am having an issue with the digital input, though. I connected them using an RCA/RCA cable, and overall I get good sound from these speakers. The problem is that I have a short delay between a sound?s beginning and the time that the speakers actually make noise. Once a sound has stopped, I can then hear a faint pop as the speakers seem to turn off again. It seems as though the speakers are set to shut off the internal amp?s output completely in the absence of any signal, and that once they detect a signal they take a moment to crank up. This is no big deal when playing music or a video, because the signal is continuous once it starts. But for the short sound effects, like the Windows ?asterisk? sound, most of the signal is lost. This is annoying to say the least. I don?t see any setting to force the speaker amp to stay on all the time, nor do I see a way in the soundcard software to force it to always generate a digital signal (a constant stream of 0s ? aka ?digital black? or ?digital silence? would create no sound but would keep the speakers on). I am able to show the S/PDIF slider control, but it is grayed out and I can?t change the settings. Maybe I?m missing something in the controls? Can anyone help?

PS ? I?ve searched a lot, and the only problem most Realtek users had is that the speakers didn?t work at all on digital because their card didn?t support digital and/or didn?t have a full-duplex capability. My card does have duplex capability, as I can open two instances of the Windows player/record and simultaneously generate a sound and record it. And I am getting sound, just with a delay.

I can't think of any reason you can't do exactly that. I've split an S/PDIF signal at the back of a CD-player's digital output before, so that I could have two different types of back-panel connectors. I just get a length of coaxial cable and split out the two leads at the very end. Then I soldered to the original internal connecting cable. That accomplished the same thing as the Y-harness you showed. You could probably use that harness, it just wouldn't maintain a proper 75-ohm spec through it (the coax configuration does). But most components with internal S/PDIF connections don't use coax inside, so it doesn't seem to matter much.

The only caveat I can see is that maybe you would have trouble if you used both connections at once. This would only be because the opamp that generates the s/pdif signal isn't strong enough to power two receviers at once. But I doubt this is a problem, as I think the input impedence of any digital signal receiver chipset is very high such that the currents involved are miniscule.

Last year I built my first budget htpc. The specs currently are
Antec Minuet 300 case
MSI K8NGM2-FID with 3.6 Bios and CnQ enabled
Athlon X2 4200
2x512MB 4200 Crucial ram
250GB Samsung HD
Imon inside for remote control
I used to have Win xp Pro and CnQ was working beautifully throttling back the cpu when not needed and keeping noise and temperatures down.
Recently I installed Vista x64 OEM. Cool and Quiet doesn't work. The cpu is always at 2.2GHz. I tried all power options in Vista and I don't see any cpu throttling option under the advanced settings. Does anyone know how to get the CnQ working again?

Also I have some problems with random sleeps (not too often) and the Ir remote not working ( not always ) after my pc wakes up but working again if I log off and on or performing a full restart. S3 is enabled in BIOS. Any users having experience so far?

Can anyone confirm if the K8NGM2-NBP is identical to the K8NGM2-FID? I want to replace the mb in my system with this one to use the onboad sound for auto-switching bit-perfect audio out to my home theater.

I can't find the FID version anywhere, but I did find the NBP at a couple of places. Specs look identical, but I hope someone out there can tell me for sure.

From the Main Post:

The differences from K8NGM2-FID are:

No onboard TV out connector
No TV out bracket
No IEEE1394
Smaller SB heatsink
nVIDIA Business Platform certified
RoHS/WEEE compliant (the letter "H" printed on the motherboard indicates it.)
AMD Commercial Stable Image Platform
TPM (Trusted Platform Module), that is, comes with a security chip.

Oh well, I did do a thread search before I posted, but I obviously missed that info in the OP!

I am bummed over the lack of firewire, but if it has the Realtek 880 audio then I can probably live with it. Anyone here have the NBP version? Can anyone tell me where to find the FID board or an equivalent Socket 939 board with Realtek 880 or 882 audio?

How far can you push a 4000+ san diego with this board?

I am currently running my sandy at 12x230=2760mhz which I am very happy with.

15% overclock that makes it goe 160 mhz faster than a fx-55 at stock speed.

My buddy brought me his computer filled with virii. It's an eMachines with Win XP on a small partition at the start of the drive and also on the main part of the drive. I was able to scan and delete 153 infected files using a Linux live cd. (Trinity Rescue Kit) I'm trying to install Linux on a small partition at the end of the drive, to make this easier when it happens again, but I can't get any distro to take. They all lock up or get corrupted and won't run. I've tried SuSe, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Vector and BackTrack. The motherboard is an msi K8NGM2-L, I read that eMachines has gone to a lot of trouble to put in a stupid bios that limits this otherwise fine board.

When I go to the msi site they have updated bios downloads for the K8NGM2-FID version of this board with a disclaimer that says do NOT use this bios on the humble -L version. They do not provide any bios updates for the -L version. So here is my question: what is the best bios for this board and where can I find it? I'm hoping that a cleaner bios will help me defeat this evil once and for all.

First off, thanks for this awesome thread. It has been extremely helpful.

I have had my setup working great for the last 8 months. Now when I went to add a second hard drive and tried to get into the bios (I had disabled everything not being used) the ps/2 keyboard port would not work. I can use a USB keyboard and the bios does recognize it, but I cannot get into the bios. Since I had disabled everything, I figured I had disabled them and since I had bios 3.20 i figured that I would update it to reset the bios. I successfully updated the bios to 3.60 and still cannot get into the bios with a usb or ps/2 keyboard. Any ideas?

I have searched and searched but found nothing that relates to my question.

I bought this board last year based on the information from this thread so I want to thank everyone for their input. I only recently decided to hook up some speakers as this computer is primarily a photo editing PC. I have found myselof using it more and more though and less of my laptop. I am having trouble getting sound out of the LineOut jack on the board. I am using some basic Pol Audio speakers (non-powered) and getting very little output. Headphones play fine. I am wondering if powered speakers are required? I have an MSI board on my work PC as well with similar issues. Is this a typical requirement for MSI boards? My dad just picked up a new ASUS board with similar chipsets and has non-powered speakers that play just fine.

Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.
