My system config:
Athlon 3500+ - K8NGM2-FID, BIOS 3.20 - 2x512MB PC3200 RAM@3.0-3-3-8-1T - Enermax Noisetaker 375W - using onboard video+sound

@renethx:
First of all, awesome guide! Thx a lot for the hard work!
I just wanted to inform you that there's an updated Realtek driver (R1.35):
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlh...d=2004052&series=2004061&Software=True

@all:
I have CnQ disabled in BIOS. The CPU is running fine, temps are in the lower 30s. Is there any benefit installing the AMD CPU driver?

I have noticed similar problems. anybody can help? my system is 3800 x2, 2x1Gb ocz pc3500. 500W smartpower 2.0

Are you sure that 1650x1050 is a standard rez? The standard resolutions over 1280 x 1024 I can see in the display properties are:

# 1360 by 768 pixels
# 1600 by 900 pixels
# 1600 by 1024 pixels
# 1600 by 1200 pixels
# 1920 by 1080 pixels
# 1920 by 1200 pixels
# 1920 by 1440 pixels
# 2048 by 1536 pixels

Moreover in the portrait mode the maximum standard resolution is 1024 by 1280 pixels.

hi, great thread!

Since vcore is still an issue why isn't there any hint of the pinmod on 30+ pages

http://www.ocinside.de/html/workshop/s9.../amd_sockel939_pinmod_anleitung_d.html

the page is German but you get the idea (the pictures)

- did I miss it?
- to risky?
- to new?
- fake?

(the messages in the (German) forum of that page suggest that this thing is for real ..)

so if anyone has the balls to test this, here you get the pins you have to connect:

http://www.ocinside.de/html/workshop/s939pinmod/amd_sockel939_pinmod_d.html

"Orginal Vcore der CPU auswälen" is choose the original Vcore of your cpu (the Vcore that is posted in your bios without any modification)

"Gewünschte Vcore auswählen" is choose the Vcore you want to run your cpu at

you don't get a modification vor every vcore (eg. for an original 1,35 Vcore cpu you get only the modification for 1,55V (and some below 1,35V) but IMHO that's still a reasonable Vcore ..)

So it would be great if anyone could shed some light on the issue. I'm still not sure what to bye, so I can't test it myself. But if this pinmod works, there would be no reason for me not the by the MSI board ..

PS: I'm especially interested if it works on a X2 3800+

PPS: I just saw, they got the whole thing in english too:

http://www.ocinside.de/html/workshop/s939pinmod/amd_socket939_pinmod_guide.html

My old nf7 allowed it. I see there is resume form keyboard and mouse which is fine - but it still means getting up in order to turn the machine back on

Thanks

Marc

Mine resumes from s3 standby using the power button on the Media Center Remote or the sleep button on the Microsoft Remote Keyboard. I didn't have to change any settings either.

Well, I've got 30 mem errors in the first 10 secs. So my initial reaction was WTF?! But I remembered that some people's memtest errors disappeared when they removed their USB mouse. The first thing that came to my mind was to disable "USB Legacy Support". Not one single error showed up afterwards!

The cold-boot issue is still worrying me a bit though...

If your old bracket worked with Gigabyte GA-7NNXP, it will not work with MSI K8NGM2-FID, because each motherboard uses a different internal pin arrangement:

SPDIF header on Gigabyte GA-7NNXP
SPDIF headers on MSI K8NGM2-FID

Note that the new MSI package does come with an SPDIF bracket, so if you buy it you will not need to obtain a bracket separately. See the main post for details.

I'm so sorry, what I meant to ask was if the bracket would work with the Gigabyte GA-K8N51PVM9-RH board. Thank you for providing those header pinouts though. I looked up the pinout for the new Gigabyte board and it seems to be identical to the GA-7NNXP's. This means the bracket I have *should* also work right?

When I first plugged my monitor into my K8NGM2-FID motherboard, only a few resolutions and refresh frequencies were available. The generic Windows video driver was being used. After installing the specific driver from the manufacturer's web site (Viewsonic) more resolutions and refresh rates became available.

The 1650x1050 rez is a common standard for 16:10 widescreen LCD's. In fact, I am thinking about buying one. I had *assumed* that such a monitor would be available with a driver to allow the 6150 GPU to make full use of it.

Could more people with a 1650x1050 widescreen monitor confirm that the 6150 GPU can handle it?

I run 1920 x 1200 DVI and the GPU handles it just fine It scales 1080p mpeg video and WMV files to that res fullscreen without issue too.

The closest mine has to 1650x1050 is 1680x1050. I notice that's one renethx didn't have though. 1360x768 is one he has that I don't see available.

Maybe the options you get for resolution depend on the monitor INF you have loaded, and whether you are using VGA or DVI.
On DVI mine goes as high as 1920 x 1200 (which is the native res of my LCD)
But when I had the sony tube as primary, it went up to 2048 by 1536 as well.

You can also add custom resolutions right in the nvidia control panel.

I believe 1680 x 1050 is the standard resolution for 20.1" widescreen LCS's (Dell 2005FPW/2007FPW, ViewSonic VX2025WM etc.).

1680/1050 = 1.6 (exact)

you're absolutely right, renethx
(1680 x 1050 is exactly 16x10 aspect ratio)

so it seems that all depends on drives - having no real experience with nvidia since detonators 23.11 i'll have to try it once again soon...
with the board I mentioned previously, based on Ati Radeon XPRESS 200 chipset,
it was possible only with PowerStrip + Pivot software combination.
Well, let's give nvidia a chance...

Hi renethx, guess you refer to the SATA disk. The strange thing is that I also tried to install XP with only the IDE drive plugged... Wouldn't I have had the same problem installing Windows 2000 Pro? Both my drives were connected and I didn't have any problem to install

Thanks anyway for your answer

I did a second memtest run just to rule out any side-effects the cold-boot issue from yesterday could have had on RAM/memtest. System booted instantly this morning without problems. I fired up memtest 1.65 and tested this time for 3 hours. Not one single error.
Then I enabled "USB Device Legacy Support", rebooted and - voilà - memtest produced one error after another...

Another thing: Someone mentioned in this thread something about a beta BIOS version 3.33 (dated 03/14/06). Where can I get this one?

I mentioned your finding in the main post. Thanks.

Ask RjG to send it to you by email.

Thx, renethx! I just wanted to make double sure. Later this week, I will have the opportunity to test another K8NGM2-FID setup. It uses BIOS version 3.00 and has different RAM, keyboard, mouse, and a 7600GT. I will memtest it and report back here.

First, I'm using dualview, with my LCD monitor as primary and spanning desktop to the TV (connected via components).

When I originally installed driver for the board, I somehow got it to display overlay video on my TV via components. That is, when I played any video on the primary display using overlay (as opposed to VMR9), it shows in full screen video on the TV. Good.

I switched driver (from 84.xx to 81.xx), and now try as I may, I can't get it to display video the same way on the TV any more. As far as I can tell, all the settings are the same. It still spans the desktop to the TV, but any video I play on the primary doesn't show on the TV. Is there a trick?

Incidentally, the 84.xx driver gets me +20pts in 3dmark06 but I get messed up display in battlefield 2 (the ground is all white).

@pctwo:
You're using the onboard video, right? Do you happen to know how to change overlay gamma with the ForceWare drivers?
With my previous ATI card this was easy: just playback an AVI file or DVD and the gamma slider in the driver properties would allow changes to the gamma value. But I just can't figure it out with the ForceWare drivers...

I was wondering if someone might list the settings they are using for Cool'n'quiet in the bios as well as in windows using RMClock. There are so many options and Im not sure how to set it up properly. Thanks

looks like they disabled it. you can only change brightness and contrast for overlay.

It's mentioned way back in a previous post, but I'll repeat it here. Memtest only has a conflict with a single address AFTER the first pass. Whether you have 1 stick, 2, 3 or 4, and I tried with 3 different brands of Ram, it is always the same address. So the Ram reads properly, it is the one address which the Bios does not allocate the ram properly as "in use" so Memtest skips it.

I have a case open with MSI, but apparently I am the "only" person who has reported it. hmm.
So if you'd like it fixed, please go here: http://support.msi.com.tw/index.php and ask them to fix it.

If you mention that it goes away turning off USB legacy support, perhaps that will help them notice that more that one person has the exact same issue and they should fix it, LOL.

It's an online form, much easier to use than the US support.

Oops... In that case, I meant I was looking at 1680x1050 monitors. From what I see after a quick search, the 1650x1050 resolution seems popular in the worlds of laptops and Macs. Not much to do with the 6150 GPU. This should also mean there is no problem driving a 1680x1050 monitor with our 6150.

The errors happen on my system the very second the test starts, that means when the first pass actually starts.
Edit: I reported this "issue" to the MSI Technical Support using the link you posted above, RjG.

Hi everyone!

I´m too having this coldboot problem and sometimes I get the message "Bad chechsum" from BIOS. I have Maxtor drives but the MaxlineIII instead of Diamondmax. I wonder if Maxtor is the common thing to trouble with this mobo?
Has anybody found a solution for this problem?
