Crusty01 - thanks for your reply. I've since gone back and restarted from scratch following the Quick recpie. I set mem to 166 and started CPU-LDT at 230 then climbed up by 2 each time. Started failing Prime95 within 2 minutes at CPU-LDT 240. Backed down to 238 and pass 12 hour Prime95 test. I bumped it down -2 and have been running at 236 now. I'm not seeing however any great noticible speed/responsivness difference between running default at 2000 or OCed 2360. I don't game. SuperP1 beanchmarks show only 1.5 minute improvement to complete a 32M test when OCed. Temp when OCed increases by 11 degrees F at load. max load temp is 115F. Not sure if I'm going to leave the system OCed. Since performace gain wasn't all that evident I'm inclined to
go back to default 2000 speed and run the system as cool as possible.

Thanks for the great thread renethx!

I'm building a system as a gift for my Dad for fathers day to replace his ancient Dell & had been debating which motherboard to go with, but thanks to you this problem is now solved!

SpeedFan does now support K8NGM2-FID with the 4.29 beta 7 . It can change CPU fan speed smoothly, but will only report SYS Fan speed. EDIT: Won't report AUX Fan speed.

Hi everyone,
Where's "SYS TEMP" sensor on the board? PCAlert always report high temp. Mine is always 42-46c (+12 - 13 c from room temp). It's always high, even the case is open. The CPU temp is not high though.
I have the latest bios v3.20.

Also, the PCAlert show PS FAN measurement but I can't find the connector on the mobo. Anyone notice this oddity?

I just purchased this motherboard. Wow.. It is really nice boad. New package does come with SPDIF cable... Now, audio cable and SPDIF cable are connected to rear bracket.

The board came with v3.2 BIOS.

My Opteron 170 (2GHz, Dual Core) can do at 250MHz HTT 5X, 2.5GHz with default voltage. (Actually, this CPU could do 2.6GHz at its default 1.35 voltage and 2.7GHz at 1.425v) Memory is running at 250MHz (1:1) 2.5-3-2-7-1T 2.6v

If this board have higher than 250MHz HTT and VCore adjustment setting, It would be very nice..!!!

I'm using this with 1920x1080 HDTV resolution thru DVI. very nice. But I see some flashing white horizontal lines sometimes. not very often. once in a blue moon, I mean. It just showed and disappeared.

I got the same problem (1920x1200 resolution). To get rid of the flashing, you have to run CPU frequency @ constant speed (i.e. no CnQ or RMClock automatic "throttle").

For 250+ MHz and Vcore, try ClockGen. RMClock also can give you slight Vcore boost.

Other than that, I love this board. I'm using it as my HTPC also. I'll move to my projector soon (720p only )

I have emailed MSI still no response... anyone find the spdif bracket? this is growing annoying. my htpc is kinda worthless without it.

@notareal, when you said that "[Speedfan] can change CPU fan speed smoothly, but will only report SYS Fan speed." did you mean:

A) It can only control (but NOT report) the CPU fan speed, as well as report the SYS fan speed

or

B) It can report AND control the CPU fan, and monitor-only (not control) the SYS fan

I'd appreciate if you could clear this up for me, as being able to control the CPU fan speed seems pointless if it cannot also be monitored, so I hope the answer is "b." I apologize if this seems like a dumb question, as almost all controllable fans can also be monitored, but I don't want to run into any odd "gotchas" with this board (of which there seem to be many...) Thanks!

Has anyone used a Scythe Mine or Ninja Plus with this board?
The Ninja Plus looks as if the fan will snag the RAM in slot 1.
I'm wondering if the Mine will install in such a way so that the fan exhausts towards the case vent, which is what I want.

I am a bit puzzled/worried by this. For example, if you read the reviews on Newegg some people say that the chipset gets very hot (too hot to touch), while others mention that it runs cool and is only warm to the touch.

What is the impact on a chip's longevity of running constantly at 70 to 80 degrees C?

Is there a simple way to put a fan on the chipset? Also, if anyone can suggest an improved ***easy to install*** passive heatsink, I would be willing to listen.

However, I also understand that replacing the heatsink will void the warranty.

On newegg there is a Reviewer (the second one from the top when sorted by date) who says that he mounted a 30mm fan on the heatsink.

I have a 30mm fan lying around and I will try this when my board arrives.

I finally got my board yesterday, so I mounted the 30mm fan on the heatsink (it was very simple it's just 2 screws that sort of sit in between the fins) I hooked up the fanmate2 and it spins slower (even though it's not that loud but I like it real quiet). The temp is not too high at all, when i touch it, it's slightly warm if I had to guess I'd say 30-35 degrees Celsius (which is not bad for a 3.7 CFM fan when not even running at full speed)

Hmm, I just tried 4.29 beta.
No Fan control, temp readings, or fan speed readings.
Readings, it says : Unable to use I/O
Info, Chipset "No Known Chipset Detected"
SMBus base address is blank
Dimm Info Unable to gather info about DIMMs.
S.M.A.R.T. the HDD dropdown is empty, there are 3 drives

I also used the web site and tried the GET CONFIG with ticket 12733 for MS7207PV (K8NGM2-FID)

Did any else get speedfan beta to work?? What am I doing wrong?

Hello!

I'M about to build a htpc with the K8NGM2-FID board, a Venice 3500+ and 1GB RAM. To get it quiet, i'm planing to reduce the vcore to the minimum on which the CPU runs stable, to reduce power consumtion and heat. Now that the K8NGM2-FID can't adjust the vcore in the BIOS, i'm counting on software solutions like RMClock or CrystalCPUID. Is this possible, or am i totaly wrong? Do i have to disable CnQ to be able to control FSB, Multi and Vcore with these programs or can i use this side by side. I want a system with the lowest power consumption on idle, and normal speed rating on full load (for a good price of course). I also thought about a Turion64 MT in combinatino with a 479->478 adapter on a 478 board, but i decided to go for the K8NGM2-FID with a A64, because of its price, mainboard features and low power consumptinos on idle. I need DVI, Tv-out and SPDIF, so the Foxconn board is no option. But back to the question: can the software solution replace all CnQ functions (like Multi and Vcore, and maybe FSB) or at least for vcore adjustment? If this is so, then i don't understand why it is a problem that the bios doesn't support it. Ok, you have to run a tool, but...!?
Thx SEB

The answer to your question is not a clear cut yes and no.
I'm too, running this board as my HTPC with Venice 3200+ and 2GB of RAM. CnQ is doing what you'd just ask automatically. It adjust Vcore and frequency based on the CPU load. It is working fine on this board (unless you heavily OC).
I found that RMClock can allow you to control how the throttle works by yourself and it is also working fine with this board.
The problem is, whenever the CPU frequency changes, it give some brief horizontal banding on the display during the changes (I'm using DVI @ 1920x1200), and it is a little annoying if you leave any automatic throttle on.
My solution to the heat/noise problem is getting a high efficient HSF with low speed/quiet fan and run "SmartFan" feature in the BIOS. (check out first post for instruction)
With all the testing I've done, I've found that the temp will drop only a few degree @ idle when you run CPU at low power mode.
See my post earlier posts for detail.

I'm trying to use RMclock with this board (I've never used it before) and I have no idea how to set it up also how do I know what voltages are needed for stability at each multiplier (am I really expected to prime it for 12 hours at each multiplier???)

May your branding problem be solved with enabling spread spectrum. Besides, is there any use for disabling this option?

My primary goals are also low power consumption to reduce costs. The PC will run 24/7. So setting the vcore very low would still be interesting. I just found a site with pin-mod calculators for amd64 CPU, which lets you give the CPU another standard Vcore down to 0.8V or so. So when you try to find a low and stable VCore with a software tool, you can set this vcore, or even lower voltages with a pin-mod. Maybe you can even then set the vcore by software, but have a lower starting voltage.

Did you install the full, non-beta version first? That will install the service needed to read the board.

My question: how do you get it to control the CPU fan smoothly?

Oops, no, I didn't. Didn't know you had to... Thanks pctwo !

At the start of this thread the various required Drivers are listed but I see that the NVIDIA® GeForce 6100/6150 VGA Drivers are not included.

Do I need these?

Thanks

I just found really wierd symptom!!!
Right now, I'm running this board with Opteron 170 @ 2.5GHz, default 1.35v 250MHz HTT x5 and memory is also running at 250MHz.

I have 2 memories. One is Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR500 and the other is Corsair XMS3200XLPT. Both are 1GB Kits(512MB x 2)

My Crucial RAM is running @ 250MHz 2.5-3-2-7-1T 2.5v and Corsair RAM is working fine @ 250MHz 2.5-3-3-7-1T 2.7v.

However, Crucial RAM is ok but Corsair RAM produces system crash when Cool n Quiet is enabled. This thing happened when system overclocked. At default speed, both memory modules run fine... 2-2-2-7-1T @ 2.5v

So, please make a note when you use Cool n Quiet at overclocked system.

I tried it last night. No difference. I believe everyone else experience this problem too when CnQ is on. Most of us here disable CnQ (due to more stability in OC).

I was wondering what I'm supposed to set "NB to SB Frequency" to, if I'm not overclocking, is 1000MHz safe? cause in the main post it always says 800MHz but I'm not sure if that's only while overclocking.

For this motherboard, leave 1000MHz even you overclock. 100% safe. I set it to 1000MHz even though HTT is 250MHz. (Maximum overclock). 100% stable..
