renethx, I don't know if your still monitoring this tread but a quick question if you are please, or anyone else who can answer. Does the MSI K8NGM2-FID support sata CD and DVD drives? I know it supports sata harddrives but the manual does not mention CD,DVD drives, I've searched this thread and found nothing definitive, If I've missed it I apoligize.
I've read that some older boards with sata harddrive support don't do CD,DVD so I want to know for certain before I invest in one.

Also is their anything deferent I should know about XPpro as apposed to Vista home prem., I dual boot between them.

Thanks for any help Hermitguy.

Welcome to the forums bf1035. Thank you for joining to answer my question I wanted to be sure before I bought a sata dvd drive. The dvd burner you mentioned is one of the drives I'm looking at so I'm glad to see it works with this board.
As to your harddrive I have a seagate 120GB SATA 3.0Gb/s and it doesn't have that problem it works like a champ, just a thought.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question. Hermituy.

I apologize in advance if this has already been covered, but I didn't find in answer so far in the thread. I am using the component
output on a CRT rear-projection HDTV. When I set the TV type to 1080i HDTV, 1920x1080 (and the overscan adjusted equivalent)
is the only resolution that fills the screen. All other 16:9 and 4:3 modes display as a small box or rectangle in the center screen.
If I switch the TV type to 720p HDTV, then 1280x720 works fine, but of course this eliminates 1080i as a selectable resolution.
I am running the latest official Forceware display driver on MCE 2005. I am sure it is something simple I am missing. Thanks.

I was thinking of putting an opteron 185 in my K8NGM2-FID. Has anyone used the 185 in the K8NGM2-FID? I'm wondering if the BIOS specifically supports it, and specifically supports cool 'n quiet for for the 185. Specific C&Q support is required for the 185, from what I hear.

I was also wondering if it is a simple drop-in upgrade to the 185 w/o OS re-install. I've read that windows re-install may be required since the multi-proc HAL will be different from the single core HAL. Any feedback re the opteron 185 with the K8NGM2-FID would be appreciated.

I just put a Toledo core 4400 x2 in mine and I did'nt have to reload windows to get it to boot, but it was not quite right so I did a fresh install and I am very happy with the performance increase from the 3200 Venice that I had.
The Opty 185 is also a Toledo core and should work with no issues but I really think the best approach is a fresh install of Windows.

Great guide to the board! One question I have about Live Update concerns VGA drivers. Among the choices there is no GeForce 6100/6150 board listed, the closest being four versions of NX6200. Which is the one, or should I even be using the MSI version, vs. the Nvidia? Thanks.

That is for MSI Vid cards. Best always to use the drivers from the Nvidia site!

hello board great thread!

i use this mobo with fx-60 and couldn't be happier, except for the noise from the

stock cooler.

i'm considering asus silent square cpu cooler. the link is provided below.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835101002

can anyone confirm if this cooler will fit this mobo just fine, without any kinda

modification?

i'm also considering the following case

http://www.directron.com/pc777b.html

will the asus cooler fit inside this case?

thanks

For those of you running Vista (or trying to), how is this mobo working out with the new OS?

I just started playing around with Vista. So far, one there's dealbreaker and one significantly annoying bug.

The annoying bug is that Vista spins down all my hard drives prior to restarting. Then after POST, each of my four HDDs (all SATA) spins back up. They do it serially, rather than in parallel, so it adds 20 seconds or so to the restart time.

The dealbreaker bug is that Vista randomly, on about 1/4 of all boots, gets just barely beyond POST, and stops before the progress throbber even shows up, then does nothing. My monitor goes into standby mode, and I have to hit the reset button to try again.

I've never had anything like these problems in XP.

Anyone else care to share their Vista/K8MGM2 experiences?

I have been using vista on this board since the end of last year and since installing the release version (as in not the beta one) I have not had any problems that can be attributed to the board.
There is a BIOS that was released for vista which allows vista to throttle the processor, maybe it solves other issues, it should be posted within the last few pages.

I just bought this board new from Claimthis on ebay!

Ohisit and Claimthis still sell this board new. Not sure how much longer but I jumped on it. They do not say it is FID but it is!

Arrived and yep.. dvi, 1394, no tpm etc.. all the cables.. and.. even says FID on it.

so.. anyone looking.. might want to do a search under MSI K8NGM2 on ebay and check out the pics and rep of the sellers... seller does not respond to emails or provide further info, but based on pics I took a chance and I snagged one.

Nice to know the board has held its value so well. The eBay price is pretty much what I paid for my two FIDs brand new 18 months ago.

Love this mobo, except for it's flaky onboard audio (lack of front panel sensing)

I'm glad to hear there's at least one Vista success story here. Can you tell me which ForceWare and nForce drivers you're running? The ones from the Vista DVD, or updated ones from Windows Update, or updated ones from the nVidia site?

I traced the hard drive spin-down/up bug to the nVidia SATA drivers from the nVidia website. Installing them via .inf or by selecting MediaShield in the InstallShield installer would make the problem pop up. And the driver wouldn't actually uninstall except via System Restore. The nVidia SATA drivers that are included on the Vista DVD work fine, as does the updated driver that is available from Windows Update. However, only the one from nVidia's website shows options for SATA2 features like NCQ in Device Manager. So I'm not sure whether NCQ and 300-megabit are enabled with the drivers from MS.

The post-POST problem is still a problem, and it's especially bad when trying to wake the PC from S3 sleep. I've been trying to get it to wake for half an hour now, but nothing I try works. I've went as far as unplugging the power supply, but even then, nothing. This has happened before, and the only "fix" was to boot into XP and delete the partition on the Vista hard drive, then start again from scratch. Hardly a viable workaround. The only progress I've made so far is to cut down on the frequency with which this post-POST problem happens. I did that by unplugging all but one of my hard drives. Now it happens maybe 10% of the time, except when waking from S3, where it happens about half the time. (Edit: I found an option in the Power Options control panel that disables Hybrid Sleep. Hybrid Sleep seems to be the culprit in making S3 impossible to resume from. It combines regular suspend with a backup hibernate file.)

I upgraded from the rock solid 3.13 BIOS to the 3.70 BIOS shortly after first trying Vista, since I wanted CnQ to work. 3.70 has been a bit flaky. It won't POST at random times, usually after I've had the power disconnected. All it takes is a reset, but that's still a bit annoying. I'll have to see if I can find the 3.74 beta you're running. (Edit: found it) I'll also have to give this thing a try without the DualTV and X-Fi cards installed. I know Creative doesn't exactly have the greatest reputation in the reliability department, but damn, I sure don't want to have to go back to the cruddy onboard sound.

I have the same problem with mine, bit I am running the v3.6 bios. Did the 3.74 beta work
any better? Might try the 3.13 since it seems you have had good luck with it.

I haven't had a chance to try 3.74, but I suspect it'll have the same problem with POSTing as the 3.60 and 3.70 revisions have.

If you go to 3.13, just keep in mind that CnQ won't work in Vista, and there's no Wake from KB/mouse option.

I recall somebody mentioning that they did it way back and the were able to take the board way past 250MHz.
It's also mentioned in the first post.

I want to add the Thermaltake Blue Orb II CPU cooler to the fit list. Put your memory in first. Dropped my temps at least 3 deg. C over the stock AMD Opteron heat pipe cooler and also much quieter. Also, it fits in the Antec NSK2400 with this Motherboard.
