I'll buy it if it's waterproof. If not Xperia i1 for me. After the Xperia Z, I really like waterproof phones

I'm kind of hoping they release something like a nexus 3.5 alongside it...not a fan of these super huge phones.

You probably bought Samsung specific ones. Every tag I've used with my Nexus S, Optimus G, Nexus 7 has worked just fine.

I'm talking about the Nexus 4, it's not compatible with the Mifare 1k tags. neither LG nor Google mention in the specs that the phone only works with select types of NFC tags.

That one is definitely tempting. It would be even better if they sell it for $529. It doesn't look the prettiest, but the specs are hard to pass up.

I wonder Google will keep the Nexus 4 name, as they did with the Nexus 7? Or possibly keep both the Nexus 4 (4.7") and the Nexus 5 (5.2")? There are only two numbers between 4 and 7.

I've thought about this for awhile. This would allow both rumors concerning the manufacturer of the next Nexus phone to be true.

The Motorola rumor:
Android blogger Taylor Wimberly, whose sources delivered a lot of accurate information before the Moto X event, recently reported that Motorola will release a Nexus smartphone in the final quarter of this year.

The LG rumor:
The latest tidbit comes from Vietnam (a hotbed of smartphone manufacturing -- Samsung's plant there is one of the largest in the world) and the bloggers at Tinh te. The Tinh te bloggers, who have been accurate with leaks in the past, claim to have the scoop on a new Nexus design from LG that will be very similar to the recently unveiled G2.

Still, I would be surprised to see Google release more than one Nexus phone. It seems too aggressive for the Nexus line.

The feel of the device is very important to me. One of the key reasons I went for the Nexus 4 was because of those rounded glass edges on the screen. And, although I love those edges, I don't love the feel of the back of the phone. It's exceptionally slippery, and I'd much rather have a rounded back, as with the HTC One or the Moto X, which improves grip.

Really? I love the Xperia Z design. Looks like they are following it with i1.

The next Nexus phone will have LTE so that problem is solved.

If the rumors of yet another glass-covered back is true then that may sway me towards the LG G2 instead. I hope those rumors are false, but it does kinda make sense from LG's standpoint.

After all, if they make the phone too good nobody will buy the G2 since you'd get very similar specs to the G2, with much faster Android updates and at a lower price. From a consumer standpoint, what's not to like with that kind of deal?

LG makes very good phones now, the Optimus G Pro was awesome and the upcoming G2 looks similiarly great. But phones are now very similar and the major selling point is now other stuff than the internal specs. For Nokia it is becomming the camera. With the Nexus devices it's getting the best and newest Android software a lot faster.

So if the rumors are true, LG probably feels it has to handicap it somehow to deflect cannibalization of their own devices.
It could even end up with a S600 processor and glass back. The difference between the S4 pro and the S600 is actually quite small. The difference between S600 and S800 is much larger, especially on the GPU side.

P.S.

The timing of the Nexus 5(Q4) also makes sense from LG's perspective since it doesn't want it to overshadow the G2's launch. I'd guess they will talk about it in October/November and get it out before Christmas.

LG will have a strong smartphone showing this fall.

LG kinda killed my enthusiasm/goodwill for them when they made crap phones back in the day. I had a smartphone that literally fell apart, without any abuse at all.

That's not a Nexus phone.

Also, it's too expensive.
You are NEVER going to get a Nexus device with MicroSD, just like you will NEVER get an Ipad with MicroSD. Deal.

The Samsung S4 Google Play edition is the closest thing you will get to a Nexus with MicroSD

why isnt it 7inch by now already???
i see my friends carrying smartphones and their N7 tablets, so i know it's only a matter of time before some genius decide to combine the two.

i know Asus made a 7inch phone/tablet but i cant find it anywhere in USA.

I understand that perfectly.

But a GPE device is both not a Nexus and too expensive for people considering the Nexus on price.

That's all I'm sayin.

If they launch it with Android 5.0, and depending on what features and capabilities 5.0 has, that could be a HUGE advantage for the Nexus that will be tough to pass up for me. As much as I like the G2 the major downside is that it's launching so very close to the Nexus.

That was true years ago, though. The LG Optimus & Optimus Pro were/are very high quality phones. Also, let's not forget last year's Nexus 4 which was/is LG-produced, too.
LG's bad rep is a legacy issue but it's not very relevant now.

Let's hope the rumor about Motorola making the next Nexus is true.

Source?

Also, I hope not, for non-US customers. Motorola is horrible for just about everyone but the yanks in terms of availability. LG is better, Samsung tends to be great at rolling out those phones but I guess Google doesn't want Samsung even stronger than they already are.

Motorola making the Nexus 5 would be logical in some sense, from Google's POV, but LG has better technology, especially around batteries/displays.

What I'd really want is for Google to stop the country-limited bullshit and start selling Nexus devices directly from Google Play to every EU country. At retailers I'd have to pay 150-200% of Google's direct price, and that makes Nexus devices such bad value that I have never bought one. Even small one-man shops have no problem shipping across EU, so it shouldn't be a problem for Google.

The Android ecosystem is sorely lacking a smaller high end phone and other manufacturers do not seem interested in making one. I think it would make sense for Google to use Motorola for that. I don't need more perf than Nexus 4, but I'd like to see them drop screen size to 4.5" -ish, make the aspect ratio slightly less wide, and cut off excess lip from top and bottom for a much shorter phone. I'd also like them to make it a bit thicker; it would make the device sit well in the hand, comfortably fit enough battery to last more than a day, and give room for a good camera module.

@evleaks
PSA: that "Nexus 5" is probably the LG Optimus L9 II. Nexus 5 (Nexus 4 v2?) looks to be a Motorola handset.
