If you like that model but don't like TMo coverage then do Straight Talk. You'll get AT&T's coverage including their LTE network and 2.5 GB of data for $45. Can't beat it.

Unless u go over the 2.5 GB cap and have kick you off that network. Been there done that. :banghead: back to square one.

Good thing is I get pretty good coverage here in Chicago, NYC and Detroit.

Supposedly they've changed to a throttle to death model until monthly renewal. I haven't had a problem with mine or my wife's phones.

Yeah this is usually what happens...when it's working properly. When it's not, the phone kinda just...sits there. It never appears to do anything involving data unless connected to WiFi or synced at H+ speeds with the tower; nothing ever gets through when the phone is showing UTMS/3G or HSDPA/H links.

Occasionally when trying to get cellular data going whether through a browser, app notifications, or even just a data-based messaging app, I get nothing while the phone just never ramps up from 3G or flips between 3G/H/H+ back and forth until the apps timeout. Sometimes the modem will disconnect and reconnect to the tower but even then it's a coin flip as to whether that'll work; sometimes it does and other occasions it'll just repeat the same behavior.

HTC One S on TMobile in Los Angeles/San Gabriel Valley area. It can happen indoors, outdoors, where I work, right outside my own house, on either AWS or PCS towers, regardless of baseband version and ROM. I never could figure out why this happens after over a year.

The other thing that annoys me is that even though I select the option to never sleep on WiFi the phone seems to do it anyway as soon as the screen turns off. It's annoying as hell when I use an app like AirDroid for texting or transferring files over my home network, and especially when trying to tether. Is this normal behavior for Android or is this down to specific phones (if the latter, I sure hope Nexus behavior is different)?

Probably nobody will care but I think I managed to fix this by flashing the baseband from the European model of the phone...only been a day so far but it's working a lot better, and I do lose the ability to select which signal/tower to connect to between AWS and PCS. Still, what a retarded solution that never should've been needed in the first place -_-

That being said if this hackjob works out in the long run, I am starting to question whether I should even bother considering shelling out ~$400 for what is pretty much just a screen size and presumably battery life upgrade. I don't find that the improved SOC really means much when phones are going to throttle themselves left and right if you try to run them full tilt for any meaningful amounts of time. Am I just going crazy here?

Your One S has a Euro baseband option but the Nexus is just 1 baseband, so I'm not sure if I have that fix like you do. Additionally, i think the battery life improvement, camera, and storage are enough for me. I'm not really banking on SOC being a huge boost, nor do I need a huge boost in performance. However I would like the lag reduced, so perhaps the SOC does matter to me a bit.

In other news, my Nexus 5 screen protector arrived.

I'm kinda confused what's going on today.

First of all, do we know if all the tech blogs and news outlets were invited? Or was Geek the only one that said they were invited?

If no one else is invited, then it leads me to believe this is nothing. However, given the lack of any news or coverage of this announcement, it leads me to believe there's some sort of embargo. So maybe the devices have been distributed and they're waiting for the embargo to lift.

Furthermore, at this late in October (if you believe that there's still a separate event in October), we're 1 week away from any possible announcement, and it's likely we would've heard something by now. Perhaps they can still say something today or tomorrow about Halloween.

I forgot that thing was scheduled today.

It's probably not going to be announced or talked about or released today. >_<

That's my bet.

According to..... Christiantoday.com..... there is an event tonight at 7pm that seems to be focused on the Play store. Musicians, etc. http://www.christiantoday.com/artic...time.nexus.5.pre.orders.ebay.launch/34464.htm

And here http://www.androidheadlines.com/201...s-october-25th-according-amazon-reviewer.html suggests embargo lifts tomorrow, not today. So perhaps the event tonight will unveil it, then tomorrow reviews start coming in.

Still, this whole thing is just weird. http://www.idigitaltimes.com/articles/20451/20131022/google-press-event-october-24-nexus-5.htm says its only about google play store, and nothing else.

Google is not living up to their motto: Don't be evil.

Not familiar with how these releases normally go. A hundred leaks and rumors but nothing from the company itself? Is it like this or not?

Hmm... Way past 7 and no site has reported anything that's happened at the event. Maybe everyone that attended had to sign ndas and they showed them new devices. I find it odd that these same sites would report the jlo verizon crap but nothing about this play event which is why I suspect more went on.

The problem was S3 was simply too good for the masses, and came exactly where people can start replacing their outdated small screened ~2010 androids. Then came the Note 2 and there simply isn't a big as S3 consumer base left for the S4.
Many people (including me) liked the smaller phones (not necessarily smaller screens) from the 2010 era. It really sucks that any decent Android phone is not comfortable and easy to use one handed or comfortable pocketable.

I've heard bad things about Straight Talk, including issues keeping a connection to the network and basically no existent customer support.

I'm curious how a company made screen protectors when the phone haven't even been officially announced yet. Where are they getting official dimensions? Usually those things have cut outs for the front camera, speaker, etc.

Most of the bay area is pretty bad but specify the east bay. Benicia (where I live), Vallejo, Concord, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Pleasanton(where I work).

is it really that bad in really dense areas like contra costa? would you get tmobile data in say, downtown walnut creek?

i had t-mobile and lived in the east bay for a while . had it from 2007 to early 2011 when i switched to verizon when the tbolt came out (probably the worst phone i've ever owned).

i lived in alameda, and t-mobile was pretty poor back then. i lived very near the water in west alameda, and it was so bad you could not make voice calls unless you were on t-mobile wifi calling. not sure how it is now as i havent been back up there with t-mobile again (i'm on t-mobile again now since i moved to LA...) and they should have some PCS band towers now . i just remember at&t and t-mobile were pretty bad at least when i lived there. t-mobile was especially poor on the freeway, it would always drop to edge of gprs for me on the 880 and 580. i think my last t-mobile phone back then was the G2.

a friend of mine just got metro PCS last month which is t-miobile in san jose and says its ok. or well better than sprint which isn't saying much, my friend has pretty low standards. my friends who are still up there though basically swear by verizon and i'd say the same. basically the only carrier in the bay area that has good service everywhere.

I'm very excited for the Nexus 5 release. I'd like to never purchase a smartphone on contract moving forward. Unlocked smartphones tend to run you in the $500-$700 range and personally I think that is utterly absurd. A great phone, unlocked, that retails between $300-$400, is very appealing to me.

I have no need to ditch my S4 but if the Nexus 5 has a solid speaker (the Optimus G Pro's was terrible IMO) then I might make the switch.

Phone makers will sometimes give out CAD models or dummies to accessory makers. My SGP case shipped yesterday and is arriving today.
