Screen was at 50% the entire time. I don't use auto. Yes, on LTE during non0wifi. Google now OFF. Location services set to battery saver (new kit kat feature)

I keep my brightness a little lower but I'd keep Google Now on but based on you getting 17.5 hours with 4.5 hours screen on time and still having 22% left I don't think I will have an issue.

Plus, you had almost an hour of calling which is more than my typical amount.

This just disables GPS, no? I've always found that disabing GPS to be trivial in terms of battery savings. I saw 2 little mini blips of GPS, and Google Location Services used 26 seconds of GPS.

If Android and the installed apps are implemented properly, no app should be invoking GPS in the background anyway. Therefore, unless you're using Yelp, Foursquare, Maps, etc. for long periods of time throughout the day, you shouldn't worry about GPS. Plus, when you're using Maps, I'm going to guess that you probably want GPS anyway.

That's just what I feel about GPS though. Oddly enough my Nexus 10 invokes GPS for no reason even with Wifi disabled during the day. It ran for 5 minutes or so over a 2 day period, which could be concerning.

I think GPS takes a little bit of power just being on and ready to use even if an app isn't using it.

AMOLED colors aren't true, they are oversaturated.

Look at the posted image. Specifically at the red on the Marvel logo. It looks much more realistic on the AMOLED. AMOLED isn't over saturated. LCD is UNDER saturated. Did you even look at the image? The red on the Nexus 5 looks faded and washed out. The red on the S4 actually looks like true red.

In the same way that wide gamut monitors like a Dell U3011 has highly saturated colours that are also inaccurate, so too, most current amoled screens are highly saturated and widely inaccurate.
Maybe we have different ideas of what "accurate" means. I say it's what looks most like real life. In that sense AMOLED is more "accurate".

Some people like this. If it's a choice between washed out colors and AMOLED, I'd rather choose AMOLED. My personal preference is a calibrated IPS screen. Once I calibrated my N4 it looked beautiful with Gamma 2.2 across the board. The N5 looks a bit ugly next to it right now.

It clearly shows how AMOLED has the highest DE values (the most inaccurate) and you can see how the colour space extends beyond the standard. Yes, reds are redder... But they're also redder than 100% red is supposed to be on a screen.

In other words, if you printed out the verge on a calibrated printer, it would look more like a nexus 5 (or iPhone 5s) than an S4 or note 3.

a few more angles..

S4 w/ Ringke Slim is just as thick as N5. Sorry for the crappy lighting - was in the process of leaving work when I snapped these.

Also would like to note that under bright fluorescent lighting, N5 display is much more viewable due to the IPS LCD.

S4's AMLOED was decent but I felt it was not as good as it could be. Note 3 screen is something else, though. Despite using same tech, Samsung improved hugely. It's brighter, doesn't get hot, and next to the Nexus 5 or anything else I really can't complain about color accuracy. (using movie mode) And of course how much one cares about color accuracy is debatable. We now know that original Retina displays on past iPhones and iPads were wildly inaccurate by today's standard yet no one seemed to care at that time. It's shocking that was only 3~4 years ago.. But going forward, I agree that color accuracy will matter as more people will carry these portable screens.

But this thread is about the Nexus 5 so I shouldn't stray off to AMOLED, I guess. Nexus 5's display is so awesome and makes the Nexus 4's display look very poor.

Yeah I think it just uses wifi and cell tower. My question is if we have all locations services disabled, will Android device manager still be able to track if lost?

Does anyone have an issue with low microphone volume while using mic from a headphone? I'm having the same problem with multiple headphones and googling the problem didn't seem to yield any resolution besides people saying they're going to return the phone because of this. I also saw people complaining about the same thing on the N4.

It's a good phone and I'd hate to have to return this because of something minor, but at the same time this is critical since I don't like to hold the phone to talk all the time

So does KK finally let you do some of the basics that Nova/Apex do such as home screen management, more folder options, getting rid of the google bar etc?

Not really. As a matter of fact, the Google search bar persists on every home screen.

Has anyone pulled the trigger on root? I want to, but I don't want to do it again and again in case 4.4.1 and/or 4.4.2 arrive in the near future.

Edit: Oh, and I can't get in the stock recovery using the usual method. Is it changed or am I doing it wrong?

I did it with one of the toolkits but it was a struggle. You can see a lot of users complaining about it:

Maybe it's better now?

we can call each other to test it out if you'd like. I typically use my iPhone earbuds at work for conference calls if I'm off site.

There's no way Google is going to make the search bar removable, that's how the nexus devices are paid for.

Google doesn't spend billions developing android, billions buying Motorola, and then billions fighting patent lawsuits out of the goodness of their hearts.

Yeah, given that the launcher is now basically a shell for Google search, the chances of them removing the search bar have reduced to zero.

Thanks, although I've tried it on both cellular calls and internet call (using Line), and in both cases the party on the other line said it's not very loud when I use my headphone mic. I also downloaded sound meter to validate my findings. When I use the headphone mics normal conversation was about 55dB, while normal conversation while not using the headphone mic was somewhere around 85dB. this was true for more than 1 set of headphones i was using.

I hope this is a software issue (maybe some type of noise cancelling) but I still haven't found any solutions yet

A few folks @XDA commented the battery drains rather quickly while gaming. I have not played games on the N5 yet.. but I can imagine. Did anyone try gaming?

mine came in .. here are my stats, which i consider normal usage for me ...

14% battery
19 hours 30 mins on battery
10 or so hours was on standby over night
screen - 47% @ 3 hours . 30 mins

other bits about my phone usage
- lots of reddit, facebook, instagram, tumblr, hangouts (both text and IM)
- light youtube - google music streaming

My initial impressions of N5 vs N4

- First time in a long time using stock launcher vs Nova. I like swipe left for Google Now.
- I miss Nova Launcher. Im driving GEL to see if i can live with it or not.
- OK Google on Homescreen is nice.
- Screen is very nice.
- Camera is a lot better than N4 and better than i expected than what people are reporting.
- I like the change from HOLO Blue to White
- I hope more apps take advantage of transparent status bar
- I miss the chamfered edges of the N4

how'd you measure the output? I'm interested in how this goes. I have a call later today and I hope it doesn't go badly.]

Edit: Time to call my work phone and see how it is...

That's bizarre and fascinating. For the moment you could use regular no-mic headphones and talk into the phone.

Your battery life seems to be ok for my typical usage. I'd like to get 4 hours(maybe a little more) of screen time but I'd be ok with 15-16 hours off charger.

I don't have my Nexus 5 yet(gets here Monday) but I have used my co-worker's for a few minutes.

The screen was nice but I'd still prefer AMOLED and I'd be willing to give up 1080p for 720p. It is hardly noticeable on a screen that size if at all but it would have a major positive impact on battery life. A 720p AMOLED on the Nexus 5 would have been awesome.

I really miss the blue coloring and wish they wouldn't have changed it to the light gray/white color they have now. But blue is my favorite color so I guess I'm a bit bias to blue.

Not sure how I feel about the translucent notification/navigation bars. Under the right conditions it can be good but depending on the wallpaper used and how developers use it things could be very hard to read. The black background makes things very easy to see. Imagine what things would look like if you had a wallpaper that was white(or close to it) at the top and bottom.

To be honest ... i'd almost want a MotoX instead. Only reason i bought a N5 over a MotoX is price.
