Oh, thank you. I will keep a lookout.

My opinion (forming) on the N5 is nearing its final stage and I am not certain how much of an upgrade this is from the N4. Some would argue LTE in and of itself is worthy of upgrade and I cannot disagree with it. But if one can get by without LTE for now, the difference between the N4 and the N5 is at once large yet very small from another angle.

If you're looking at purely download speeds, I agree, LTE isn't a huge upgrade. However, let's look at all the benefits of LTE in the N5

- Reduced latency helps with race to idle
- Helps with congestion especially in big cities such as NYC and SF which helps battery
- Better SoC that comes with a modem and does not have msm_hsic wakelock issues.

All this gives me a phone that idles very well with < 2% / hour drain. I got hit 5pm yesterday with 90% of battery left. My N4 would easily have dropped to below 70%. I realize that 90% without doing anything is so-so, but 70% without doing anything is pretty horrendous. That alone has been a huge boost to me.

I would love to see if this is strictly because of Snapdragon 800 and LTE envelope tracking, but I'm pretty confident the N4 was just that bad. Even an S4 would idle pretty damn well compared to the N5.

I got my Nexus 5 yesterday. Things seem to be going pretty well so far. Currently on my first full day testing the battery. Battery is at 76%. Off charger for 4hr 37min. Screen on 1hr 3min. Location settings all on with battery save mode. Brightness at about 35%. So far it doesn't seem great but still a huge improvement over my old Galaxy SII Skyrocket.

Also, I can't seem to get the search for nearby places from the dialer to work. It only searched my local contacts. I have Google Now on and Nearby Places set to ON. Caller ID by Google also on. Anyone having this issue as well?

Receiving or placing a call to a business does pull up the business name.

The Nokia wireless charger AT&T sells for $25 works with the Nexus 5, yes?

I think that setting is disabled in the dialer settings by default.

Fastest LTE speed I've seen on phones so far (on my phones). About 40 mbps down. Yay. The fastest in my house is oddly the Note 8.0 which supposedly has a lesser modem. Tablets can spend extra juice, I guess.

So this is what it's like when Google Services are off. The network icons (Wi-Fi and cellular) change their colors to orange.

Is there a note taking app similar to S-note (Samsung) and Q-note (LG) in Play store? I am looking for;

- Voice recognition (converts voice to typefaces)
- Handwriting recognition (converts handwritten letters to typefaces)
- Widget
- Local only (no internet connection required)

I think I will get rid of my Nexus 7 since the Nexus 5 is better than 7" tablets.

Anyone else find themselves using tablets less since owning a 5" phone? It really reduces the need for a tablet.

Yes for a 7 inch tablet

No for a 10 inch tablet.

Something I noticed this morning - the screen is heavily polarized. As in completely invisible when in landscape mode.

I don't remember the nexus 4 being that way, but it has admittedly been a while since I had one. I think it was dimmed but still usable.

Not a huge deal but if you use polarized sunglasses you will be stuck in one orientation depending on your lens polarization direction.

While not great battery, seems like it's generally fairly decent/in-line with S4 for me.

My N5 isn't going to replace my N10. Don't have a N7 since I never saw a use for it.

Yesterday was my first full day with the phone. I got very similar to you 12 hours off charger and 3:30 screen on time. I'm not thrilled with it but still WAY better than the Galaxy SII Skyrocket it replaced. On that phone I got about 9-10 hours of charger with about 2-2.5 hours screen on time.

EDIT: It appears that your battery life numbers also included a few short times on the charger. Mine was all off charger.

for me, I know I'm quite demanding when using my phone (eg in browser, would spawn multiple tabs, scroll quickly etc), so cpu would spike a lot.... from battery monitor widget, my screen-on current usage is around 300-700mAh, which is 13%-30% per hour ....

this fact means I'll get 3-5 hours of screen-on time if I continuously use it

the benefit I see for nexus 5 is the idle consumption: very low, 0.5-1% per hour overnight with sync on, data on, wifi off. ~2% per hour during day time when I periodically wake up the device to check email / gmaps / etc

I can go a whole day (24 hours) with nexus 5 with 30% left (12 hours overnight [5%] + 2 hours screen-on [40%] + 12 hours day time [25%] = 70% usage). count it 24 hours + 3 hours on, if I take that last 30% = 1 hour screen-on time

on my previous phones, the idle consumption (even with kernel tweaks) are too high, so I can only hit 12 -16 hours w/ 2hour screen-on before hitting 0% and needing to recharge

yup, i'm really enjoying the idle battery. My usage patterns leaves me with about 1.5 hours of screen-on time per day. on my N4 I'd be down to red by the time I got home after 12 hours. On the htc one, i'd be at 30%. with the N5 i'm usually at 50%.

I've heard some people say that a battery has a "break-in" period and that it actually gets a little better after a few days. I've only had the phone for about 48 hours now and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced battery life getting better after the first few days.

I find that the Nexus 5 is good enough for book reading through the Kindle app, etc. It's bright and razor sharp. I didn't like my Galaxy S3 for this purpose - the colors were a bit off and even though it was 720p I didn't find it that enjoyable for reading small text on. The 1080p screen of the Nexus 5 is gorgeous and combined with the IPS tech it makes reading small text nice.

Though I still want to get an iPad mini w/ retina as my primary home tablet. I like the 8" 4:3 size of the ipad mini, and it's a big enough jump over the phone to be justifiable IMO.

Holy shit you're right. It's still readable though, but not so much in direct sunlight. And frankly I find using most phones with sunglasses to be a chore, and don't really use them in landscape mode with sunglasses on at all. Still, good to know!

Also: this makes a good test for polarization on sunglasses! My Ray Bans, which I was certain were polarized are not. My wife's Oakleys certainly are polarized though! The N5 goes into stealth mode when I turn that one sideways!

I've had mine since the 5th, a little over a week now. I've not seen any difference in my battery life. Naturally the first couple days I was playing with it a lot more than I have since. So maybe that is the reason it seems worse at first?

The battery life seems very much like my Nexus 4. Nothing great, but it gets me through a day.
