This looks real enough.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ksOJl0PDDg

Side bezels are thicker than I anticipated. Look just about the same as they are on the N4. Considering the N4 is 15:9 (1280x768 instead of 1280x720), the display got taller (1920x1080) but not much wider, if at all.

Edit: As you can see from the video, one thing that I don't like about soft-touch back is that it gets dirty and shows wear/tear over time. And you can't easily clean it off unlike on glass surface. Hard to find a "skin" that sticks.. But I am glad its convexed-ness is minimal.

Edit 2: Is it me or the interface (fonts and icons) got bigger on default launcher?

The soft touch back on the Nexus 7 is great, feels much better than glass and has gives you something to hold onto.

$299 for 16 gb and I'll probably buy. Any higher I will have to think about it since Google charges sales tax and shipping which adds additional ~$40 to the price.

One thing my 2 year experience with stock Galaxy Nexus has taught me is that frequent Google Android update is double edged sword. It's good to get prompt and frequent OS updates, however minor. But each update usually brings surprise to the battery life. Some update gave me good battery life but others wrecked havoc. The initial 4.3 update was fine on my phone but small later update 4.3 patch ruined the standby battery life of my GNex where it will now drain like 3% an hour where previously it was draining like half that. I experienced similar problems on various 4.0 ICS builds Google pushed out. It's one reason looking forward to 4.4 KitKat but I'm sure the cycle will remain the same.

I know. I don't deny the utility of it. But imagine a situation where:

  • Your fingers drippy from ketchup and phone rings. No napkin in sight..
  • You accidently spill a drop of oil/ink/Ky gel on it..
  • Someone at work sticks a bootleg post-it (extra adhesive) on the back of your phone for reminders..
  • Your friend wants to borrow your phone for a phone call and you can see her/his greasy, muddy hands..
  • etc.,

It's kind of like those non-stick frying pans. They are great for cooking, but washing them is a pain. Used once, they are never the same.

While I can understand that, I know my Nexus 5 will be stuck in a TPU case.

That's definitely true. My Galaxy Nexus struggles to make it through the day

You can add http://www.netwares.com to the list of cheap refill sites. Pretty good service. You can save a lot of money going the refill route, especially if you do quite a bit of color photo printing.

To be fair, it seems most old phones, iPhone and Nexus alike suffer from poor performance from the latest OS updates, 4.1 ran like crap on the Nexus S.

The Nexus 5 is almost a carbon copy of the HD2.
Look at the side profiles. Almost identical.
Same for the soft backside.
If the top and bottom were more straight vs curvy, it would just be a bigger version of HD2 which is not a bad thing at all.
The HD2 at the time was unmatched.

Citation needed.

It makes no sense for Google to market the 4, 7, and 10 as a coherent, unified Nexus family with ads that feature all devices together and then have one of those devices follow a different naming scheme. AFAICT, the 4 referred to the screen size (which is better? to round up to 5 and have people angry with you because it's really 4.7, or to just floor it to 4 and be safe?), and that it was merely coincidence that it corresponded with the generation. Likewise with 5.

Google reset the Nexus branding when they introduced tablets into the mix. With the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, they were co-branding with Samsung's own product lines, but with last year's Nexus batch, they reset everything. The N10 isn't the "Galaxy Nexus Tab", the N4 isn't the "Optimus Nexus" or the "Nexus G", and the N7 didn't carry any naming from whatever Asus's brands were, and unless evidence to the contrary is presented, I believe that this reset was to produce a coherent, unified brand and naming scheme of "Nexus Inches".

The Nexus 4 did not get it's name from the screen size. The screen isn't even 4" it is 4.7". Even if the name was because of the screen size the new Nexus would be called the Nexus 4.96. It is called the Nexus 4 because it is the FORTH Nexus phone. Samsung wanted to have their naming on the Nexus phones they built and Google said OK. That was just probably part of the agreement.

The Nexus tablets are a different issue. They are based on screen size. Last years Nexus 7 was called the Nexus 7 because it was 7". This years Nexus 7 kept the same name because it was still 7". The size matched the name and the size stayed the same. That isn't even true with the phones. The Nexus 4 and the new Nexus phone aren't the same size and neither of those sizes is 4".

Calling the new Nexus phone the Nexus 4 again wouldn't make any sense and would just cause confusion. It wouldn't be the 4th Nexus phone and it wouldn't be 4". What would the 4 stand for?

I hope Google has the sense to make the two models thinner vs fatter like the droid razr and razr maxx.

The Droid Maxx wasn't that much thicker and the reason it was thicker was because of the bigger battery. If getting a bigger battery means it is a little thicker that's fine. A super thin phone does me no good if it is dead half way through the day.

Adding a feature is not nearly the same thing as engineering it in. (I thought about using an analogy here... But I was overwhelmed at the possibilities. )

I doubt anyone would argue that plugging in a phone is difficult. But picture this... My phone is sitting on the charging pad. It rings, I pick it up, use it, and set it back down, without having to deal with a cord. I know it seems like no big hassle, but it is really nice once you get used to it.

The thing about wireless charging is that you have limited use of the phone while it is charging. With a USB charger that has a decent length cord I can continue to use my phone even while it is charging like when I'm laying in bed at night. If I get a call while it is charging I can still answer the call but also allow it to continue charging. This is great if you are talking and your battery is getting low. You can plug in and continue talking. No need to hang up just because your battery is getting low which, on a phone with only a 2,300mAh battery, is very likely.

True... But phones with wireless charging have a USB port, as well. And I have certainly chose to plug in my DNA at times, when I want to use the phone while it's charging.

So... With wireless charging built in, you have the best of both worlds.

How exactly is 2300mAh half of 3000mAh?
If you truely believe 2300mAh is half of 3000mAh, then I wonder what school you went to.

Well for a 2100mAh battery, the Nexus 4 got pretty bad battery life. Hopefully battery life is much improved regardless of the small size increase, but there's no question it's going to be substantially lower than the G2 which is one of the few all day phones.

With the charging pad I have, it's so small, I can hold both the phone and the charging pad behind it with one hand. So far, I'm really like having the charging pad.

Today is the day I thought? I'm probably in the wrong time zone but weren't we supposed to find out today?

We have pictures, video, specs, patents, licensing, etc. Could they have leaked the wrong announcement date?
