Kernel tuning app to mess with the gamma and RGB sliders. Then there's "Display Tester" on Android that lets you check the results.

Agreed. There's a lot of screens that look a LOT nicer than the Nexus 5. Quite honestly, a nice 720p screen > poorly calibrated 1080p screen. I'd take my N4 calibrated over my N5 uncalibrated. this is the same thing I said when the N4 first came out. People were so amazed at the screen, but mainly for the 720p most likely. The washed out colors were just abysmal to me. Anyway, good thing the N5 >>>> N4 in terms of calibration, but Google still has a ways to go before getting something as well calibrated as the HTC One or iPhone 5s
Is there any wonder a screen calibrated to suit your own personal preferance is more pleasing to you than one that isn't?? Did you actually take any screen measurements from your N4, like the ones linked above showing the N5 having the most accurate colour reproduction? Have you considered you might actually just like slightly over-saturated colours on your screens?

I love my Nexus 5. I came from a Galaxy S3 and while I miss some of the features offered by custom roms, I think I'll keep it Vanilla as possible. I probably won't even install the Nova Launcher that I loved so much on the Galaxy S3 and my Nexus 7. Idle battery is more than acceptable for me. For my standard usage, I still have 12% battery with 2d 4h on battery already.

I told you I calibrated using test images, not just set and forget. I spent a lot of time looking at XDA calibrations. 95% of them are users saying "this looks good, here are my settings." A few of them are backed by people who showed test images and explained what you're supposed to look for. I also used Display Tester in order to check that I'm at Gamma 2.2 across the board.

Also, what is your brightness? WiFi or mobile data(3G/LTE)?

I meant via the headphone out, not the speaker which I thought I implied by mentioning my headphones.

Ah, I missed that part too (maybe mention that earlier in the post, my mind is already jumping ahead before I get the end of the last sentence, haha).

Yeah, audio over my headphones does seems to sound better on my Nexus 5 than it does the Nexus 4. I can't remember what my iPad sounds like on headphones though.

I just realized that LG reversed the orientation of the micro USB port. I wasn't going to purchase the N5 but that fact alone would be a deal breaker. I use a Phillips dock speaker/charger on my nightstand. Why did LG do this???

I played around with the N5 in Best Buy today. It was nice, but I wasn't blown away by it.

I'm a stickler when it comes to the screen, and I found the N5 screen to be dim unless brightness was at 100%. I'm currently using a HTC EVO 4G LTE which has an absolutely gorgeous screen. Viewing angles were ok, but wash out a bit, unlike my EVO.

I also found the onscreen buttons especially irritating. The bar eats up a good portion of my screen. Maybe you get used to it over time but it may be a deal breaker for me unless there's a way to make the bar translucent.

Liking the phone so far. Took it on vacation with me a few days - was worried about running out of battery since I'd be away from a charger for a full 12 hour day, but was never really close to running out of battery (I bought an external battery pack but didn't need it at all). I was especially proactive though (occasionally I even turned on airplane mode if I was in a bad signal area and wasn't expecting calls, etc.)
I kept Google Now enabled. I disabled Gmail sync, although Chrome sync is still on.

I upgraded from a Galaxy S3. Definitely liking the 1080p screen, though black levels aren't as good (as expected).
The camera seems pretty solid in HDR+ mode.

Hit a couple app crashes and a few reboots over a 6 day period. I rooted the phone on day 1 though, and also put on a custom kernel which probably isn't necessary at all, so I'm guessing the problems are from that - not especially worried about it.

It's not a deal breaker for me, I don't have a USB dock this would impact. But it is kinda annoying since we get used to plugging in the USB cable with the icon logo facing up and on this phone we have to reverse it or fumble for a few moments until we remember to reverse it.

Nexus 7 2013 is the same way.

I'm a stickler when it comes to the screen, and I found the N5 screen to be dim unless brightness was at 100%.

The way that is worded seems strange. It's not bright unless you turn it up to 100%? Shouldn't lower brightness suppose to be dimmer? Or do you mean even at 100% it's not bright enough? It has 480 nits, that's pretty bright. But yes, there are brighter phones.

I'm currently using a HTC EVO 4G LTE which has an absolutely gorgeous screen. Viewing angles were ok, but wash out a bit, unlike my EVO.

Hmm... I haven't noticed any issues with viewing angles. It's IPS so has great viewing angles and mine seem great. At the moment I just have the Nexus 4 and iPhone 5S to compare with and seems on par with both of them.

I've definitely heard complaints about colors. Usually either reds are too washed out or other people saying greens and yellows are too strong, I guess that's the same thing. And I definitely complained a lot about the Nexus 7 2012's poorly calibrated screen. However my particular Nexus 5 doesn't seem to have this problem. I'm kinda surprised because I do hear people complain about the lack of reds quite a bit, so I believe it's an issue. But when I use Display Tester or www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ and compare this with my new Nexus 7 2013 (much better calibrated than the previous) or my iPhone 5S or my Nexus 4, the Nexus 5 colors look really good.

The one area my Nexus 5 display seems off is the whites. They seem too warm. I don't really notice it when looking at the phone by itself. But when it's next to my Nexus 4 or iPhone 5S, I definitely see a noticeable difference in the whites.

I also found the onscreen buttons especially irritating. The bar eats up a good portion of my screen. Maybe you get used to it over time but it may be a deal breaker for me unless there's a way to make the bar translucent.

I'm not a fan of the onscreen buttons. However Android 4.4 has given me hope this will improve. Apps will have the option of implementing immersive mode that hides the navigation buttons and menu bar giving you a complete full screen experience. And you just have to swipe up or down to bring the buttons back. Seems like other manufactures have probably had something like this for a while. I like how it works on the Kindle OS for example.

Unfortunately this is a feature that has been placed into third party app developer hands to implement. And god knows how well that has worked in the past. So who knows if or when we'll see apps that need full screen space like games, reading apps, and browsers take advantage of it. Jesus, even Google isn't using it in Chrome yet and they created the thing. Seems like Chrome should be the showcasing app for immersive mode. Google disappoints me sometimes.

^ regarding the comment above swiping up is already really annoying given I can't disable the Google Now toggle.

In the Gallery App, if I want to crop the bottom part and want to drag the slider up, I would be swiping up. It's impossible to crop from the bottom now. I have to crop the top and then recenter the image.

I think it will be difficult to create a solid experience with full screen. It's not impossible, but knowing how well Google executes on these things, who knows.

I'd almost rather they kept the search button around because in-app search is useful. Long press search can still be reserved for Google Now or Voice Search.

I'm not sure how many people use USB docks, but I have used one since 2009 with my iPhone back in the day. I had a Phillips one for my iPhone and now an Android one for my S4. It would be incompatible with the N5.

LG must have a reason for a reversed USB port in any of their devices. But I find it puzzling.

Oh, thank you. I will keep a lookout.

My opinion (forming) on the N5 is nearing its final stage and I am not certain how much of an upgrade this is from the N4. Some would argue LTE in and of itself is worthy of upgrade and I cannot disagree with it. But if one can get by without LTE for now, the difference between the N4 and the N5 is at once large yet very small from another angle.

Played with it at bestbuy. I loved everything about it except for the size of the screen. Way too small compared to my Note 2. Hopefully Moto makes a phablet.

Samsung phones (and some LG phones) are sort of an exception because their buttons are completely out of the screens. I've also noticed some stock apps launch full-screen by default on the Note 3 which makes the screen look even bigger.
