Wow. I have a Nexus 5 but I didn't own the Nexus 4. The side by side difference in the whites is HUGE. The Nexus 4 has MUCH better whites than the Nexus 5. The Nexus 5's whites look pretty good its own and somewhat better than the whites on my old Galaxy S2's AMOLED screen but damn the Nexus 4 had great whites.

That's funny because when the N4 came out, people were bashing it for it's yellow, yellow screen.

I read the AT's review and I think the review is spot-on, if slightly heavy on the positive sides. IMO it is still amply justifiable. After all, it is impossible to evaluate the Nexus 5 without taking the price in context. Anything it does better than competition gets a point, and anything it falls short on is compensated by the lower price.

Said that, the battery test results methods are somewhat questionable. I am guessing the numbers are higher than my experience because of the way they are measured - especially the fixed brightness and the controlled radios. Under auto-brightness, uneven cellular coverages, and most importantly your Google account that actually moves around Google's radar, those numbers are probably hard to reproduce.

Display results are very nice to look at. The Nexus 5 boasts accurate colors, but somewhat low contrast and high black level, and slightly different red than I am used to. I am happy that the values measured by AT mirror my personal impressions posted earlier in this thread despite my badly nearsighted, contacts-wearing eyes.

I have to say, however, valuing nothing but color accuracy in display seems somewhat myopic () , reminscent of some HDTV intelligentias elevating black-level of Plasma above everything else, or CRT-purists sticking to it for latency advantage. For instance, I find iPhones' (and iPads') display overly reflective and thus distracting but it seems rarely mentioned in the reviews. Color accuracy is a part of a display - an increasinly important part, admittedly, but it is still a part, not the whole. Every chart AT produced deserves to be added in the equation, IMO. In the Nexus 5's case, its low contrast ratio contributes to the perceived lack of clarity, or "pop". To its credit, AT does mention it but kind of buries it as it quite often does when it comes to the Nexus devices.

Which reminds me again, you can't really complain about the Nexus devices if you think about the price tags. Google successfully built a critic-proof platform for itself.

I agree with your assertions. The N5 is a great device, and the recent camera update was a pleasant surprise, fixing one of the more disappointing aspects of the device, and something I was afraid they would never end up addressing at all. I think the only thing holding me back from being completely in love is the battery life, and I agree AT's test probably makes it look better than it is in practice. I appreciate that they use a standardized test instead of just saying "it got me through the day" like most other "tech review" sites, but the fact that it shows it getting similar battery life to an iPhone on WiFi shows how far off I am from those numbers.

The new update supposedly helps with the speaker volume too, so overall, I'm becoming more and more pleased with what you get for the price with this phone. However, I'm STILL on the fence about trying out the G2 solely due to its slightly larger screen and battery. That comes with the trade-offs of less dev support, the rear button, and no wireless charging.

I had a similar issue on Windows 7 when I got my Nexus 5. I think it was an issue with a conflicting driver from my old phone but I'm not sure.

Just curious why that screen shot looks so bad? Seems to be very dim and has a brownish tint to it.

As I was responding to lopri:

"I'm using Lux on Night mode -- which lowers the color temperature to around 5300K in order to minimize blue spectrum to minimize sleep impact when using at night. (Kind of like f.lux on the PC) "

Also, I took a photo of my Nexus 5 on Yelp with full brightness under Halogen light:

Mine still isn't as remotely yellow as what lopri posted.

Straight on:

The Nexus 4 does have a cooler white (higher temp) but the difference in the shot is way overblown due to incandescent light. I took a new shot which looks closer to the actual screens.

It is true, though, that lots of people will notice the warmer white on the Nexus 5 compared to just about any other mobile devices out there. Thankfully our eyes have amazing adaptability and resolve the new white easily after a minute or two.

The color I find most interesting on the Nexus 5 is actually red. I am still undecided whether I like this new red or not. It looks "fresher." XD

I think I will wait for LG next phones. They picked up on Android race later than Samsung and HTC, and given another year or two they will (hopefully) get there. I really like the edge-to-edge screen on the G2, and I have a high hope that they will address the shortcomings that you mentioned in the future. Maybe by this time next year they will introduce a no-edge screen.

Installed 4.4.2 -- Used SuperSU Survival Mode -- worked with root in-tact (Note, I have stock recovery)

Didn't know 4.4.2 is out already. But I kind of expected it and did not bothered to update my 4.4.1 yet. @Zerogear: That is a promising news. I also run stock recovery with root access so I hope mine works out the same.

In the meantime, does anyone see same red between the two below? Click on the original for better determination. ^^ White is clearly warmer on the N5 once again. I tried to manipulate brightness to make them look the same but wasn't successful.

P.S. My calibrated monitor's KitKat red looks closer to the N5's KitKat red. It's been a long time since I calibrated my monitor, though.

Both seems pretty close imo, though iPads might be a _little_ bit brighter. Which may just be backlighting. But yes, my calibrated monitor (Dell U2410) has reds (or colors) very close to my Nexus 5.

Wow, 4.4.2 made a huge difference in the snappiness of the camera. And i skipped the 4.4.1 update... Time to try some dark modes...

Wait. Some people have gotten a 4.4.1 update AND a 4.4.2 update? Geez, I'm still stuck on 4.4.0 with my phone telling me I'm up to date. Even my Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 haven't gotten the 4.4 update yet. I must be stuck in some land that updates forgot.

Anyone have the issue where your Exchange account get stuck on "Email syncing" and you have to toggle email sync off and on again to get it to work temporarily for a few hours before it gets stuck again? I've seen people talking about it on the Google forums and it's happening to me. I'm really hoping the .1 or .2 updates fix this issue.

Both devices' brightness were at somewhere between 80~100% (but not max). If iPad's brightness was set higher, I do not think lowering it will help reproducing the same red seen on the Nexus 5. It already looks deeper than the N5's Kitkat red, and lowering brightness will only make it look darker, which can give an illusion of even deeper (or should I say gaudy) red instead.

Now the 6 million dollar question comes in: Which displays an accurate sRGB space, considering the differences? (white, red, teal.. ) Many people have been told both were, but they are clearly not the same.

Any Exchange problems I had was fixed in 4.4.1 on my Nexus 5 Version #1(I call it "version #1" because I'm passing this one to my best friend since he now wants it and I will be ordering another one in a few days for myself).

I'm on 4.4 and haven't been prompted to update. I have a custom kernel. Is this the reason?

I believe so. If you change anything in the System folder so much as simply changing boot animation, you probably won't receive OTA.

No, I had faux kernel on root/stock 4.4.1 and it auto downloaded 4.4.2 OTA (and I flashed it in TWRP). Smoothly running 4.4.2 now. Go ahead and download the 4.4.2 OTA somewhere and sideload it. Really works great.

For the rooters/ROMers out there, Franco kernel is compatible with CM now. I can now go and mess with gamma. My first shot was using someone's settings, and it gets close to Gamma 2.2. My reds are a little high at 2.5, but almost everything else is 2.2. The screen looks a LOT better now. I'll continue following the calibration thread as they discuss additional tweaks.

Is your location mode set to high accuracy? I only have noticed that when I have had that set to high accuracy.

That does look a little closer but the whites on the Nexus 4 still look better.

I agree and disagree. To me it depends on where I am, what kind of shape I am, and what I was seeing right before I use my phones. As you see from the pictures I posted (albeit exaggerated), no single color looks the same again and it is the law of physics. We can only approximate.

Today I found this on Youtube. The person measured color gamuts of popular smartphones. I have no idea how s/he does it but I assume s/he is doing it under a controlled environment.

Nexus 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE7uDEZyIJg
Nexus 7 (2013): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5JqdkxvIas
iPhone 5S: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q399sNLe4w
Note 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5iVXX0z1v4

It's hard to see the wire frames but if the measurements are correct all LCDs seem to have trouble reproducing saturated hues between red and violet (magenta?) Note the videos don't say anything about accuracy but the size of gamuts in comparison to sRGB. If you search the person's other videos there are more comparisons (including AMLOED screens and Adobe RGB)
