so all day today the phone went from basically not vibrating at all to randomly vibrating very well. googled it, it's a known issue and a hardware defect. getting an RMA done. once the Google CS guy heard that he immediately offered a replacement. i guess they know it's an issue.

I can rarely hear the vibrate on this phone when it is on a table in front of me. I am on 4.4.2

You're not supposed to listen for vibration, that's just a side effect. Unless you're trying to say the vibration isn't very powerful, in which case, why not just say that?

six of one half a dozen of the other.

since i was in class today, i had my phone on the table and or book in front of me. with any phone i've had, i can always hear the vibration. the entire class has their phone on vibrate on the desk. using the phone on vibrate in this manner is using the SOUND of the vibration as the primary factor in knowing you have a notification. the teacher is cool with that little vibrate sound but not some melody ringing out - so at that point the vibrate NOISE, not feeling it, is indeed the primary way the vibrate is alerting us.

it's not just a side effect if you are using it as the primary way to know you have a notification.

you just learned something. a vibrate feature has a dual way of notifying you. by feel in pocket. or by noise when on a surface near you.

People are often in situations were they don't want to cause a big distraction to other people when their phone goes off but still want to be able to be notified themselves when something comes in. The sound caused by a decent vibration is perfect. Not to distracting to other people but enough so that I don't miss it.

i am really starting to love being able to say OK Google on any screen with the Google Search Bar on it. Google Voice recognition is really really good.

I can be driving just tap the screen on, say Ok Google - Text this person - asks what i want to text - say it out loud - says do you want to send this message - yes. Boom. Hands free texting. It has been getting things perfect. Even when I ask it to call names that aren't so common.

It's making me avoid hooking up Nova Launcher which I love.

Re: Vibration in 4.4.2,

In 4.4 it was a very muted long dragged out vibrate that was seen in the N4. If you had Samsung phones like the GS3, GS2, GS1, etc. beforehand, you're used to the very quick yet sharp vibrate that Samsung uses.

I'm guessing the N4 got a lot of flak so Google/LG improved the N5 vibrate. It's still not like a Samsung device, but it's a little sharper than the N4. To me 4.4.2 really changed it by making the vibrate more noticeable and a shorter buzz. If you don't like it perhaps you can try a custom kernel with vibration settings.

So... I'm returning my Nexus 5 for a replacement. I just discovered yesterday that my microphone has a serious problem with static noise. As in, regardless of what kind of room or environment I'm in, it sounds like a hurricane is tearing through my videos. (I don't record a lot of videos or stuff like that, which is why it took me a while to notice.)

Here's what it sounds like. It's apparently a somewhat common hardware defect.

Contacted Google Play Support and hopefully I have my replacement by the end of the week. For those who've had to replace their N5's for whatever reason: Did you get a brand new unit? Or is it a refurbed/recertified/respiffied one? just curious.

in my case it is a known hardware defect. in that case, i deserve a fully functioning phone. then i can tweak it.

I am running Cataclysm 4.4.2 + Franco

Everything works great - nice and smooth and all the extra features are perfect - Reducing the nav bar in size was a must for me.

Think I'll stick with this combo for a while!

DLeRium - what are you changing for color settings? When I had my Nexus 4 I used the settings provided by Franco and loved them, but I see he doesn't have his own set of settings

Also - What are people using for Text Messaging? I've never used 3rd party apps, but I do not like Hangouts!

Always recommended apps tend to be EvolveSMS (a new player, free for basic stuff, advanced features and theming as IAP), Textra (stock-like), 8sms (stock-like), NinjaSMS, Sliding Mesaging (great for always available access, although it can be clunky and weird with MMS, ymmv).

I'd like to mention hello sms, a very simple app that is smooth and pretty. As long as you have no issues with ugly emoji, it's a very nice app.

got my replacement nex 5 today. this time i just went straight to unlocking the bootloader, custom recovery and rooted kept the kernel and ROM stock.

the sticker on the back does not look worn at all like my other one. after everything installs i'll see if it has the vibrate issue.

not sure of the manufacture date but it came with 4.2.1 and needed to update to 4.2.2

Well crap. I just realized my Nexus 5 is doing the same thing. It's not as bad as yours, I can hear myself talk okay. But there is a very noticeable crackling going on the entire time.

Think I'll give them a call too.

anyone have any real life comments on nexus 4 vs nexus 5 battery life? I am thinking about upgrading my nexus 4 and my main issue with it was the battery life... does it feel significantly better on the 5?
