Well, wish me luck. My wife's out of town, so I'm sending the kids on a sleepover specifically go stand in line at Best Buy tomorrow. If it doesn't pan out, I'm going to have to find something else for the kids this Christmas .
Oh well, game over. I must have screwed up the alarm clock, I had tried to set it up for 5:15am; I woke up about 6am on my own. So I layer up my clothing, and head outside. The temperature reads 30F, not too bad but still chilly for a North Georgian to stand outside up to 2 hours. There are 3 stores in my town that would carry it, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. I had originally planned to go to BB but Target was the first store I passed at about 6:30am. Lo and behold, there are only two people waiting! I decided to make a quick run to the 24 hour Walmart next door "just in case". The place is completely dead, but there are no Wii's to be found. Back into the van, and over to Target. I get behind the two people standing there, and the first guy is talking about how smoothly his first Wii experience at Target went on Black Friday (I never heard why he was getting a second one). About 3 minutes later, a Suburban drives by and a lady with her best north Georgia accent drawls, "You here for that Wii machine? They already passed thems out." "My daughter gots number ten and twelve and lot of other peoples who were there all night didn't even get one." At that point, one of the Target employees was letting out the cleaning crew so we asked him, and he confirmed it - no more Wii's at Target today.
I asked the other guy, "What about Best Buy?" "There's already a huge line there." So I drove by on my way home, and sure enough there are
at least 100 people in line, at least 20 of which are leaning up against the wall in very heavy sleeping bags.
So I don't feel bad about oversleeping any more. I think I would have just been SOL a bit earlier if I had gotten up on time. I would walk days in the snow to get food or lifesaving medicine for my kids, but I'm not camping out for a video game. It's just not that important. The only bad thing is going to be explaining why Santa couldn't have just made it for them.
If the Amazon lottery doesn't pan out, I'm not sure what I'll do. The odds will probably be 50:1 by the time they draw, so I'm not holding my breath. I've seriously considered an Xbox 360 "in protest", but I don't think there are as many good kids' games for that as there are/will be for the GC/Wii.
