Nintendo sued over alleged Wii Remote patent violation
By Tony Smith [More by this author]

Nintendo has found itself on the receiving end of a lawsuit alleging the company ripped off a US patent that California-based plaintiff Interlink Electronics was granted back in February 2005 as a result of a September 1997 application.

Interlink's patent, 6,850,221, details a "trigger-operated electronic device", which is only one aspect of Nintendo's Wii Remote, which Interlink claims contains its technology. Another is the Wii's pointer functionality, which Interlink maintains is covered by its patent too.

Interlink's device also has a suitable sensor to determine where on the screen the controller is pointing and to detect trigger presses. Interestingly, Interlink saw the gadget more as a mouse alternative than a videogames console controller.

Trigger-fitted devices go back well beyond Interlink's filing. As Kotaku, which broke lawsuit story, notes, the Nintendo 64 has a trigger on its controller released in September 1996, a year before Interlink filed to have its idea protected as a patent.

However, the pointer element may be harder to defend.

Whatever, Interlink wants a jury trial, it said in documents filed with the US District Court of Delaware on 4 December. It's after damages and a ban on Nintendo's allegedly infringing products. ®

Somehow, given the light gun from the NES, i envision that Nintendo has the patent for this, long before this other company ever filed for theirs (post N64)...

Just so they dont start suing Wii owners... yikes.

That's odd. I don't remember seeing this mentioned anywhere and was just going to post the exact same thing.

I don't see how wiiconnect could cause it to get so hot.

it keeps the wireless card on 24/7. I would presume that is sufficient enough. I've noticed it myself too.. I will probably turn it off.

Mine got hot only when I had one of the vents blocked. There are vents on the side that would be the bottom if stored horizontally, the side that would be the bottom if stored vertically, and I believe the back. I had mine sitting horizontally on carpet, and it was blocking one of the vents. If stored vertically, you have to put it in the stand, because the stand is slightly elevated to allow air to flow underneath. It should be stored on a hard surface (carpet = BAD) to allow proper airflow.

Mine was on a desk, on the stand, and it ran pretty hot when not in use. Got to the point where I just unplugged it whenever I didnt use it. I hope they fix it in 2nd gen, pretty rediculous that it gets hot when its supposed to be off.

I think I remember learning that the light gun wasn't a pointing device, rather it sees the screen when you fire, and that is why the screen flashes (it sees better that way). It was something like that...

I don't think the heat of the unit while off is anything to worry about. I recall from interviews with Iwata saying that he wanted the unit to be on all the time for the WiiConnect, and he wanted it to run cool enough so that they did not have to run the fan. As long as it is on the stand or on a hard surface, it should be running within design expectations. Still, you can turn off the 24 hour connection if you do not want it to be running when you turn it off.

The pointer technology isnt the same as a light gun I think. Also I doubt they can sue Wii owners even if they want to, they probably just want a settlement from Nintendo. Cha-ching.

Sound doesn't go through component VIDEO cables. you need an extra red/white (L/R) RCA cable to connect the Wii to the TV or Stereo or Receiver, etc.

*sigh* you're the 2nd one that said that. you should look at a wii once.

the compnent cables have 5 cables in one, which is the video and AUDIO.
its a component cable for the wii, not just plain component cables

Yeah, I think Nintendo is assuming that people are hooking up the AUDIO portion of the component cables to the TV (and then from the TV OUT to a Receiver).

The first dungeon is the Forrest Temple, which you go through as Link, not the Wolf(Link)

and if you are looking to buy a system the ones with extra games go for about the same price as the bare system. there are some good deals on auctions that dont get advertised correctly. i've seen wii + 3 extra games for $500 and the bare wii go for more.
