Also, the ps4 won't play mp3s (WEAK), but will it play mp4 videos from a thumb drive? I have a Sony blu ray player I could sell and use the ps4 in its place but I don't want to lose features.
MP4 is just a container that's typically coupled with video using the h.264 codec and something like AC3 for the audio. Sony needs to have access to these codecs for DVD and Blu-Ray playback anyway. MP3 is a completely separate codec requiring royalties to
Fraunhaufer IIS.
Edit: ah, no external storage at all. Honestly what the F.
Yes and no. There's no external storage allowed for game-related storage.
and what is the actual point of this feature? i mean i know you can play ps4 with your vita, but what is the actual use case for it?
Last night, I was finally able to "purchase" Dragon's Dogma from the SOE store. I kind of wanted to play it or at least try it out; however, it was late, and I didn't really want to go downstairs and turn my TV on. It would have been pretty awesome to just grab my Vita, which sits on my nightstand, and try it out for a few minutes.
I would imagine that it'll be very similar to NVIDIA's Shield, which is pretty smooth. The one benefit that PS4 Remote Play has over NVIDIA's Shield is that the preselected game selection on the Shield is pretty limited. I kind of wanted to play Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed, but it's not on the list, which means it may not work right. I tried to fire up Electronic Super Fun from Steam (you can stream Steam Big Picture Mode), but I couldn't even get past the opening splash screen.
that is something totally different i think, and the 2 games must be developed for that.
Yeah, that's one of Sony's "cross" features called Cross-Play. It's essentially just save game sharing between the Vita and a PlayStation console. Games such as Dragon's Crown have it. The other is Cross-Buy, which means you buy for the PlayStation and you get a Vita copy.
in the case in the video, is the ps4 just streaming the video output wirelessly on the network to the vita, and the vita is basically acting like a ps4 controller to the console?
Yeah, I mentioned that it's like the Shield above because they both use hardware encoders that have direct access to the buffer. Ryan Smith
looked at NVIDIA's Shadowplay in the GTX 780 Ti review, which uses the same tech as Shield streaming... it just saves it to a disk.
How does this remote play even work? How does the Wii U remote play work for that matter? Are we seriously streaming raw uncompressed 1080p @ 60 fps wirelessly now? When did that become possible? Let alone battery life.
I doubt it's streaming at full resolution. Going back to the Shield, when I start a game on the Shield, it actually changes my PC's resolution to 720p. That makes sense since the Shield's screen is only 720p, so why render at anything higher? According to Wikipedia, the Vita's screen is only 960 × 544, so why render at anything higher than that? The only difference is if you're connecting to a Vita TV, which will output at the TV's resolution.
It just streams over the network. I'm pretty sure that Sony has mandated that ALL PS4 games support remote play.
I didn't think it was mandated, but it was "strongly suggested"... which is probably close to the same thing. From what Mark Cerny said in an interview, the developer just has to figure out how to map the DualShock 4 to the Vita. The only difference is the lack of triggers, but the Vita has two touch inputs (touchscreen and touch panel).
Oh, and they also stated that games that use the PlayStation 4 Camera will not be available for Remote Play. That's to be expected though.
