Wow 8 AMD jaguar cores, thats like the power of 2 netbooks. While this disappoints I have to think the Wii u tech is only 3x slower. Not nearly the same gap as a Wii vs. a ps3 or 360.

I had hope to see some FX quad core power here....

Once you go libgcm, you'll quickly end up in a situation where your code will only run on a single, specific GPU (or family of GPUs).

This ability to code closer to the metal against a single spec has always been the console's primary advantage over PC. It's also why single console exclusives are often more impressive graphically than their cross-platform counterparts.

Is there any reason to believe that anything except a few exclusive titles will use any specific coding? I mean, for the first couple of years developers will be able to do impressive stuff compared to the last generation anyway and won't bother putting any resources toward tweaking. For now, I'll imagine they will focus on gameplay and getting titles ready for all platforms since that just got easier compared to the last generation and they want the money. In 5 years priorities might change and it could be worth starting the low level tweaking game.

Both the next Xbox and PS4 use similar CPUs/GPUs so we might see some cross-platform games taking advantage of the silicon from the start.

They had to keep the power consumption down.

Not sure if someone's mentioned this but I gather that the PS4 won't be backward compatible. Kind of makes those free games from PSN+ a bit less interesting.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/21/sony-psn-games-wont-transfer-to-ps4/

BC is a mixed bag. It won't have native BC and current PSN titles won't work at release, but over time they will develop emulation wrappers for many/most PSN games that will allow them to work on the PS4. Unfortunately there are no time tables so it could be awhile if at all, but I'm sure they are going to try and do at least some of them because there is still tons of profit to be made from old games such as Final Fantasy and Resident Evil.

I'll leave this here so we can stop talking about no used games.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...gamer-playstation-4-will-not-block-used-games

Yep, came here to post this but figured it was already mentioned.

There never were any reports that specifically said the PS4 would ban used games. All leak sites were going on was that patent application. Which as we know, just because a company files a patent doesn't mean they'll implement it. They do it in case their competitor gets the same idea. Royalties baby.

The Durango on the other had did have a specific rumour saying it will ban used games. I'm sure Microsoft will be scrambling now assuming this rumour is true. If the next Xbox bans used games, it will put it at a significant disadvantage now that both the Wii U and PS4 won't.

Yeah and honestly I think people complaining about backwards compatibility are spoiled. When the SNES came out it didn't play your nes games and when the n64 came out it didn't play SNES games. I guess since the ps2 it has been expected but to me its not a big deal. If it will play my old games fine, I'll trade or sell my old system. If it doesn't then I will keep it. Either way is OK to me. That could just me me though as it seems a lot of people harp on it. When a new system comes out I almost forget about the old one for a while anyway.

IIRC, Sony actually pushes developers to use libgcm, but the option to use OpenGL is available if you just want to get out something that works quickly and on multiple platforms. The trick, as it usually is, is to get the engine writers (i.e. Epic with Unreal) to use the libgcm for their console engine code bases so that the developers that license that base have a higher performance target to start from.

Likely see game-specific emulators for PSN titles depending on their complexity, but I wouldn't expect any miracles.

The only negative thing about the lack of BC for me is that, given my age, this is probably the first generation where I've had a good enough income to easily support a modest gaming habit. So, I've got plenty of games unlike previous generations where I may have purchased random games, played games that my brother bought, or traded them in to buy other games.

Although, I mostly own 360 games, so this doesn't matter too much as far as the PS4 is concerned.

did you really expect it to. even the fastest PC out there would have issues pushing 4k at 60 FPS in a game

Also, it's not that the PS4 doesn't do 4K gaming, it would just look like a PS2 game which no one wants. You can either have great graphics or high resolution and fewer people notice the latter.

Didn't Sony start the whole concern with the PS2? If I recall it was one of it's major selling points was it could play everything you already had. I remember it was a key point in the PS3 launch that was scrapped a few years later, after the PS3 library was solid of course.

I said this on another site, now I just want to see what MS announces. If they come out and focus solely on Kinect and how they want to take over the living room instead of games, you know the things we buy these consoles for, then it will not be a day one buy for me.

I've been pro-360 this entire generation although I've owned both the 360 and PS3. I have to say I agree with you. Ultimately, price is my biggest factor though. If either price above $400, it's an instant no purchase for me, I just don't want to pay that much.

They will both be above $400. I am guessing it will come in around $500. Now what will be interesting is if Sony doesn't charge for online, but MS still does. I would be willing to pay an extra $50-100 knowing that I will save more in the long run at $50 every year for the next 6-7 years at least. I will be pre-ordering a PS4 as soon as you can, I will just have to decide if I want to go through amazon and have it shipped or go through gamestop and drive an hour to pick one up.

They didn't even show then goddamn thing... there was no point to this conference.

Wild guess - a black box with 2 USB ports, a slot-loading disc drive, and an HDMI port.

Being serious though, the enclosure will probably maintain the overall form of the PS2 and PS3 - that of a larger box stacked on top of a smaller box. Probably glossy at launch, though I would much rather have the matte finish of the PS3 slim. We'll probably see the exact same ports that are on the most recent revision of the PS3, plus whatever proprietary port they use for the Eye. The HDMI port will have to be 1.4 now for the 4k output. Only thing left up for grabs is the port for the power cable - will the power supply be inside or in an external brick?
