Yea I don't know why angry birds is $60. I play that for free on my android phone. I say you just skip that game.

I too rarely buy digital versions of games unless they are for pc.

Actually I never did go for every game before. This is new. Usually I just collect very niche games like JRPGs and first party releases on older systems, or all Atlus or Square games or Capcom, Konami, etc. I don't bother with the trash games like the 15 versions of Wheel of Fortune, etc. And even a lot of that is stuff I kept from when I bought it new.

This is different. For 4 major reasons:

1) This is the first home console launch since I started getting serious with collecting and the temptation and challenge to maintain the complete library a brand new so far dominant console from day one is quite overwhelming. Well there was the Wii U too but I'm pretty much focusing on exclusives and first party there since the majority of titles are available in superior versions on more powerful consoles with better support, etc. (remember this for #3)

2) Doubly so for the fact that even for the rest of 2014 and beyond the projected upcoming library is still pretty thin. It would be trivial to stay on top of it at 2-3 games a month at the current release schedule.

3) Triple so in that this is the first time in a long time that one console is also definitively superior to all others, thus making even multi platform releases a no brainer and eliminating any need to compare or make decisions on which version is better or splitting games across multiple consoles, further contributing to the urge to go all in with a complete library on one platform from day one. Last gen it was split even with multi platform games, sometimes better on one or the other, and I didn't really care outside of JRPGs and platformers on PS3 and shooters and multiplayer games on 360. The split between PS3 vs 360 on multi platform games immediately deflates any desire to try and have a complete library on either system since it would entail duplicate games and just be stupid. That barrier does not exist with PS4. It's easy to justify a complete library on one system and exclusives on the others this time around.

4) This is likely to be the last generation of physical media and the last real collectible physical game library and end of an era that's existed since the first game console. While I've objected to the digital model in previous posts, it's only because it coexisted with and interfered with simultaneous physical releases. As long as physical exists alongside digital, people like me will always go physical and completely disregard digital or any draconian measure digital versions necessitate being enforced on physical copies that prevent them from being played 100% stand alone with no external authentication. But if a system went all digital and had no provision for physical copies in the first place, there would never be anything to collect and it would actually be a salvation as it would put a finite limit on games to be collected that would never grow any further from that point on. However I'm still a gamer first and collector second, I'm still not ok with potentially walking away from thousands of dollars of game library investment in digital form that has ZERO free market value when I decide to move on or that can be disabled on a whim if you connect an unapproved device to your console and get your account banned or some equally plausible scenario.

So where does this leave me?

By the time you have all those must have PS4 exclusives and the best versions of all AAA multi plats, you already have 99% of the games available for that particular console anyway. So that brings us back full circle again to that final 1% : Angry Birds and Just Dance...

But I still refuse to pay $50 for Angry Birds. Esp when the same exact game is $9.99 on every other platform and even that's generous for a free mobile game. I would actually pick it up for $9.99 on PS4 JUST to check that one off the list of all possible retail physical game releases and hope that it did so poorly they never release another retail physical version of the game again.

First world problems. I told you so.

The fact that you're considering paying that money for a game you don't plan on touching is signs of a problem. You can justify it all you want, but you need help.

So I'm 3 games away from a complete PS4 physical library to date... but principle alone I can't bring myself to spend more than $20 (and even that's pushing it) for Just Dance and Angry Birds... when the hell are these stupid trashware games going to go on sale? EVERYTHING else has seen 29.99-39.99 at least once since November '13.

Pisses me off because Angry Birds for example is currently $9.99 on EVERYTHING BUT PS4 and XBO and it's the EXACT SAME GAME assets and all. Even the Wii U version is $14.99.

They are totally milking the "no other games yet" gravy train on next gen for all it's worth aren't they.

I'm a bit worried about Just Dance because I see the 9,000 year old Wii version *still* tries to retail at $49.99...

Yeah first world problems.

Infamous should crash the price wall on some of these stubborn launch title prices right?

If you're going to collect, then collect. Don't focus too much on the price. Get the game while you can if its important to you. Just think about it, those two games are the games that will parish with time and cost $2,000 unopened in 2030. You'll wish you had the games then cause someone will buy them on eBay for $4,000 due to rarity. lol

If someone buys angry birds on eBay for 4k they are wrong in the head. I don't care how many years it's been.

Saw that a new firmware update is out, but that it doesn't do much. When are we going to get some of the features they bragged about leading up to launch, like instant resume. It's looking like the same old Sony that promises the moon and then takes forever to get it to you.

Yea I don't get excited about firmware updates any more. What did they update. I could care less about improved DVD quality. I actually have not had any major issues before the updates.

Something so mainstream and popular and throw away as Angry Birds will never be worth anything. Its like Madden discs for 10 cents at Gamestop. You could wipe your butthole with a new one every day and never run out.

It has to be somewhat rare, niche, low volume, under the radar, and memorable and desirable to be worth anything.

Angry Birds is none of these things.

Besides you'll never see games be as expensive or collectible as SNES or NES ever again. Not only is gaming mainstream and millions of copies of things printed these days, people see SNES prices NOW and everybody is stock piling current and last gen in case it becomes the next Stadium Events. Of course everyone who wants it therefore has it so the market value is $0. A sort of self defeating prophecy.

Its like people thinking the 2007 Shelby GT500 will be worth millions some day like the original. It won't. Too many people, namely everybody that cares, bought them already, all thinking the same thing hence there will never be a shortage of them or the right conditions to make them rare or collectable

Self defeating prophecy indeed.

A sealed Bravely Default CE or Last of Us Post Pandemic edition or something so limited that most people don't even know exists? Yeah big bucks. Even already 2-3x MSRP. Granted that's not why I have them. I have them because I love games and its reassuring to know I don't have to pay $500 on eBay if I want one.

I ended up with two in the panic that ensued after Newegg informed me they weren't getting it and canceled my preorder 3 days before release :awe:

Hotly anticipated title of the year for me, damn right I opened and enjoyed it.

FYI, GameStop currently has a promotion going on where you can use PAYPAL15 to get 15% off just about anything (excludes consoles, ends 3/23), which includes Infamous. You can pre-order online and pick the game up in the store. It's also possible to buy gift cards online for a reduced amount and get the game for even cheaper.

I am tempted! :hmm:

That's interesting but how do they discount the game when you pick it up in the store if it's an online only deal?

I went through the checkout process to see how it works. Essentially, you're just placing an order online that becomes an in-store pick-up similar to what Best Buy and other stores do. I recall that Gamestop had an in-store thing before, but it was more of a keep-it-behind-the-counter reserve system. This new system appears to have replaced that?

Also, you cannot enter gift cards during the process, but you can use them when you pick up the item. I also saw that while you do enter a credit card, the order details specifically state "Not charged until picked up from store". So, even though my order says $55.58 (tax included), I can get a gift card to cover that.

Hmm I have infamous pre ordered already. I wish I would have known about it. I could go to the store cancel it and reserve again but I'm not sure.

I did that would bf4, ordered online, didn't pay and just picked it up at the store and paid there.

I called my local store manager to ask him and he told me that the price of an item online does not always reflect in the store. So what he said will probably happen is you get rung up in the store and it'll pop up for $59.99 and unless someone brings in an invoice from the online store, they won't change it. He also said that some managers he knows won't even budge on it and will force people to place the order from the website.

I'm not sure if it's just your wording, but it sounds like what you're talking about is a price matching situation. That's not what this seems to be. This appears to involve actually placing an order that you've designated to pick up in the store. I know what you're talking about though as I've gone into the store looking to buy an item that I saw on SlickDeals, and at times, even the personnel were surprised at how cheap it was.

No, Gamestop doesn't ship to store. They ship to home and do online reserves(where you pre-order a game and get it locally).

Do you perhaps have a link to where you're looking at this? I can't seem to find this.
