Sounds similiar to how World of Warcraft works. You can start playing a new patch once about ~60% of the download is complete and as you play it will prioritize what to download based on what you're doing.

they said only a byte is needed to start playing even if 20GB is left. thats pretty tempting

I wonder if they're streaming it using the Gakai technology until it is downloaded and then playing it locally...

8gig GDDR5 is nuts. MS is shitting themselves if they're only planning for 4GB.

most of the rumors for 720 have all said they plan 8gb which is awesome. the thing i think ms might mess up on is the gpu power. for too long the cpu has taken center stage while in gaming the gpu should be and the one in the ps4 is looking good

No wonder why it's starting at $429. All MS has to do is launch at $299 and the market is theirs. It couldn't be easier for MS.

Except the 720 is supposed to have DDR3 instead of GDDR5, which would probably be around 2x to 2.5x slower.

All the tech talk doesn't really matter (if they are as reasonably close as the rumors seem to suggest), as we learned with PS3 and Xbox360 all that matters is which dev tools end up the "default" for cross platform development. If the PS4 dev tools are so good that they choose to use them over Visual Studio, then the PS4 will have the best looking/most optimized games. If devs choose Visual Studio as the base and then port, the opposite will be true.

Latency means jack when you have almost full control and knowledge of what exactly you can expect system resources wise. Its easy to preload everything well before you need it.

At that point, amount of memory matters more. Speed doesn't hurt either.

Why the hell would they ever talk about the dev kits in a public unveiling of the PS4. That doesn't make sense. Dev kit specs are almost always kept secret

...because you measure latency in cycles.
If you have 8 cycles per second and a latency of 4, it takes half a second.
If you have 4 cycles per second and a latency of 2, wow, much lower latency! but it still takes half a second.
example would be ddr2 to ddr3. DDR2 at 800mhz had latency ~ 5-5-5-18, where for DDR3 at 1600mhz, the timings were generally 9-9-9-[something]

I'm more interested in the non-game stuff, since we all know these systems will just be like real fast computers with their high res graphics and better AI and stuff.
I want to know if it plays MKVs or if you can stream internet radio while playing games or if you can multitask in the dashboard.
The graphics do look exciting though, a new Battlefield with PC quality graphics sounds buy worthy to me.

yeah that's a good point.

Heck MS will match the RAM and still hit the $300 pricepoint if they must. They do not want to give up their lead.
