I guess they're taking a page from the 360, which used GDDR3 for both CPU and GPU with good success. Using XDRAM in the PS3 was always a bad decision. I'm happy to see the final nail in Rambus's coffin.

Funny reading some of the comments on Kotaku. Someone criticized the use of x86 CPUs claiming they only support 4gb of RAM, thus 8gb is useless. Facepalm.

Anyway, it's good they finally announced the damn thing and we've got some idea what it will be. I'm a little worried they didn't show off any hardware other than the controller. We also didn't hear anything about the rumoured paywall on PSN or the anti-used game system. IMO the real important stuff is yet to come. Hopefully these rumours are wrong. I'm feeling a little more confident but not yet in pre-order mode.

Hopefully at E3 they will address all of our other concerns.

They're probably still finalizing it. Early dev kits will just be PC's essentially in normal tower cases. Getting a quiet, reliable cooling system, plus tons of other design problems to overcome all while keeping it small and sleek.

Regarding used games, by moving to digital distribution it will fix itself I think. Not letting people sell their discs is just too much of a change from what people have been used to for so long. I do not think they should do that at all. But how often do you see Steam users complaining that they can't sell their games?

What's broken about used physical games is how Gamestop is the one who benefits. That is the beef developers have. Unless you work at one of the few studios who do insane business, being a game developer sucks. I was one for 6 years and bailed. Long hours, blood, sweat and tears and you are rewarded by being laid off after it ships. But gamestop's pockets sure got thick from the games I worked on while I was doling out resumes.

So, how can they use a x86CPU with 8gb of RAM? I understand a x86 CPU can use 8gb of RAM (the 4gb limit was always software based on the PC end), but why didn't they go with a 64bit CPU? If this console is to last another 8 years, I'm a bit confused about them choosing a x86 CPU instead of x64? or am i reading this wrong?

At least now the developers have self publish on the PSN. That's an option they can use to distribute their games without worrying about used cutting into them.

I'm guessing its an x86-64 processor

So Watch Dog is a cross generational title? Is still coming for current gen consoles?
Anyway, it looks nice.

Yes and PC

destiny, for ps3 and ps4. of course, if you get the ps3 version you WILL be the laughing stock of your entire circle of friends.

Unless you can't find the PS4 anywhere and want to keep up with the game because it is a persistent game space.

8Gb RAM!
7xxx GCN derived GPU!

This is extremely promising. I was too scared to hope that it would actually be that good, but its a huge relief. The 8Gb is critical to decent performance in the future and will by itself make it last for 2 years extra. The GPU is also a pleasant surprise with potential for offloading lots of task from CPU to GPU and also future driver tweaks.

This generation could probably feel less gimped in the same amount of time than the horror that is PS3 in 2013. This will also finally bring a number of things to PC games by default that have been too slow to arrive:
  • x64 support
  • Very high resolution textures
  • Innovative games where the maps are not limited by memory
  • Decent AI

I came away from this presentation impressed with what Sony has been trying to do. They focused on how the online social aspects would work for gamers in their games and tried very hard to drive the point home that this is for gamers and developers to have more tools for better immersion and new ways to make games. I think it will be a success. Sharing your videos, walkthroughs, and screenshots instantly and without lag during your game thanks to offloading the network to a co-processor, is a very cool thing. I can totally see a developer with a playable version of a new title doing a live stream of the gameplay and using the social network of PSN to get feedback from people who were watching. Could be awesome.

Streaming PS4 games to your Vita can potentially be a real game changer in the mobile space. If it works well and with enough titles anyway.

I wasn't expecting a price or release date, but not showing the actual console itself is definitely a departure from the norm. The link to the Major Nelson tweet posted a few posts back pretty much says it all.

Nonetheless, I'm more interested in the PS4 than I was before the announcement, so that's something. I'm curious to see how much momentum this gives Sony, the games weren't really anything we haven't played before unfortunately. Didn't feel like a new console announcement, more like a run-of-the-mill mid-cycle E3 announcement. It's probably difficult to do that anymore though, with the internet leaks. We know a lot of stuff already, it kind of ruins the excitement.

This is what I thought when I first heard about PS3-to-PSP/Vita streaming, but it did not work well at all. Almost unusable in my trials on my home network with more than sufficient network bandwidth. I'll be interested to see how they've optimized it this go-round, though. I already have the Vita, so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Another thing that wasn't brought up here is that sensor bar they showed. This is kind of getting ridiculous now. For people who own all 3 consoles, they now have to somehow fit a Wii bar, a Kinect, and now a PS4 bar by their TV. How many freakin sensor bars do I need in front of the TV? Hopefully its completely optional and only needs to be hooked up if you're doing motion control crap. The rumors are the new Kinect will come bundled with every next-gen Xbox as well.

Too bad they'll never agree on some kind of universal standard. In before Mad Catz Sensor Shelf accessory.

DriveClub was totally new. Yeah it's a racing game but the network allows it to be so much more than that. I think you need to look beyond just the games you see and look at how they integrate with everything.

Take Destiny. It's a FPS game, similar to Halo in some ways perhaps. You can play the campaign solo and you can have your friends drop in and out seemlessly. When you leave the game and come back, you are able to see things that have changed but your story is never interrupted.

I really like the idea of being able to power down and when I come back start from where I left off. IMO that's the best feature they announced the whole time. I'm not sure how the feature of allowing your friends to jump in your game and take over will work. I can see issues with that. I know I wouldn't like to lose control of my game lol.

Agree or disagree?

disagree, instead of going to a bar and playing darts or foosball I can play a game with my friends. Nothing wrong with that

so no optical bd drive?

Didn't say but I can bet you yes. Blu-Ray is one of Sony's main properties, and I don't think they are prepared to go fully digital yet with the games library.

The thing about that is it seemed like it would be used for the social media aspect, like giving a walkthrough, presentation of a new game a developer is working on, doing a video confrence with gamers and developers etc. If it was integrated into the games I think they would have shown it.

Remember they said people can watch you play your game if you share it? I bet the camera will stream video of you actually playing and not just the game footage. I can see this working for a developer who is showing off a new title.

The Starbound devs have been doing this for awhile now via Twitch.tv.
