I can't imagine why anyone would want to use a browser on their console unless they don't have a laptop or tablet.

heh...this is getting ridiculous. I don't mind some ads to keep costs down like on mobile apps where the ads help keep it free as well as certain websites that generate some revenue from ads. That doesn't mean I should have ads when I am paying money for the product already. To me that's just greedy. There is a reason that watching a movie on Netflix doesn't produce ads every 15minutes but Crackle does. I'm paying for Netflix.

The worst part is they will start politicizing gaming and that's crap IMO. Hollywood is full of people who are both rich and well known but open their mouth on certain issues as if we should take their word as gospel and follow them to the end of the earth. I think most people would agree that politics shouldn't permeate movies and gaming except to provide a decent storyline to work with. I don't really think entertainment and politics should mix beyond that because gaming is a way to relax and escape the day to day reality of life for a bit. Throwing politics in gaming kind of ruins the escape.

I wouldn't mind so much if you could turn them off. On a web browser you can use adblock etc and remove all the banner ads and popups. On the Xbox you can't, they are there. There is no opt in or opt out either which I think sucks. Many times there's an option to allow anonymous data collection. This option doesn't exist on the xbox.

My exact thoughts. If they go through with this the chances of me buying an XB1 go from slim to none. That goes for Sony too.

We need some pushback, opt out options. If you pay for PS+ or XBL there should be no ads at all, or free points for opting to have them. Hell with BW caps that's just a waste of data anyway.

Huh? These ads will come on the dashboard front and center. So far the XB1 has been pretty light on ads in my experience and most of the ads are gaming related which is ok for me. It sounds like they will ramp it up and start pushing things we don't need or want to see.

My comparison to the PC experience is that I don't get ads on Windows and in my web browser I have options to remove certain unwanted ads. On the consoles there is no option. I do not mind ads that are about new games or live events that are gaming related. I don't think other ads belong there.

I haven't purchased and XBone yet, but is your XBone account tied to your Bing or Microsoft Windows accounts yet?

It is tied to your live account. It's the same account I log into windows 8.1 with. Which is a good thing IMO, it can unify things across XBL, Windows, and SmartGlass. If I had windows phone I imagine I could have it there too.

That has to suck if they clutter the dashboard with ads. I think ps4 has some too in the what's New section but they are mostly about games or movies.

Cluttered it isn't because your apps and stuff are first but if they do have ads I don't want to see stuff advertising politics and non-gaming stuff personally.

Yea which is fine because that makes sense but all over everything, stuff that has nothing to do with gaming, sucks but we have to assume Sony is going to do the same thing eventually.

I'm very borderline on movies and games, but once you start seeing McDonalds, Mt. Dew, etc, I'm done. And if I see McDoucheBag for Congress/President on there, I'm taking a huge shit on it and send it to the company's HQ.

If I pay for PS+ or Gold, they can GTFO with the ads. Quit being greedy bastards.

I think a solution would be an opt-in where they pay you credits for accepting ads, which you can cancel out of at any time.

I'm with you...if you are paying for a service there should be no ads.

I agree too. This is actually why I stopped by the Madden games. I was playing one day and they had PATCHED IN an IN GAME advertisement for snickers. Pissed me off so fucking bad.

I don't think the PS3 ever did or I don't notice them. So I don't see why Sony would start now. But $$ talks and bs walks, most everyone here if owned a company would probably take the cash as well.

Sony has been taking some money. Look at that damn Redbox app that you can't remove.

Yea I logged in there once. Figured it would cost a buck to rent a movie digitally....nope like 8 bucks depending on what version. Drove down the street and rented it for a dollar and some change.

i have windows phone and can confirm xbox one uses smartglass off of it

On Android and iOS there are smartglass apps too, but I am wondering if windows phone uses your live account for contact sync etc. Similar to Google accounts on android.

Yea it does if you have one and set your contacts up in your live account. Similar to Google where you can log in to your account and pull your data. I wonder if they have a restore your apps feature too like Google accounts have when you run an open source Rom on the android phones.

This 100%. The only ads I want to see are gaming and possibly movie related, but that should be a different section.

Everyone just loves political ads. Great move MS.

I was actually thinking it might be fun to have an xbox one with kinect, but that's just creepy. I play video games to escape the real life bullshit. The last thing in the world I'd want to see is a political ad on my video game device. Once sales tank far enough, I'm sure they will release a non-kinect sku.

In game ads can work if used correctly. In sports games for example. If you're playing NHL 20XX, you expect to see real world ads on the boards of the rink. It adds to the realism of the game. Or in Gran Turismo, you see adds for things like Dunlop tires or Lucas Oil along the track. The problem is they're so often misused. It borders on offensive to pay $60 for a game that's full of blatant advertising and product placement. I really wonder how effective it even really is.

Putting political ads on a game device is in poor taste. Especially when asking players to fork out $50/yr or however much XBL Gold is these days, just to get access to basic online services.

Yea I logged in there once. Figured it would cost a buck to rent a movie digitally....nope like 8 bucks depending on what version. Drove down the street and rented it for a dollar and some change.

This is the one thing I missed most about the video store. Digital movie rentals almost cost as much as just going to the theatre. Sadly the last video store in town closed last year. I used to rent games from there too all the time. GameAccess is too expensive for the amount of games I have time to play these days.

Ah, so MS will leverage your search habits and app installs etc. from the Windows OS to target ads at you on the XBone.

This is the biggest downfall but yet biggest potential advantage here for MS over Sony, MS has a much bigger ecosystem with their PC side to draw from. I'm not sure if the political ads were a good place to start though.

Sony could jump in with Google to get targeted ads on the Playstation by having an option to log into your Google account.

I'm old school though, I prefer no targeted ads at me at all while I game.
