Oh and uncharted 4 delayed until spring of 2016...awesome.

http://n4g.com/news/1689329/uncharted-4-a-thiefs-end-coming-spring-2016

Hopefully the PS4 Slim will be out by then, I decided I'd wait until either the Slim or Uncharted 4 to buy into this generation, whichever came first. But it'd work out well for me if they both came bundled together.

I thought I smelled an incoming price drop of $349 on the PS4 this Spring due to all the recent extra games/controllers being bundled in at various retailers, and the Gamestop trade in value bonus on PS3 > PS4 upgrades going from $125 earlier to $175 recently. Usually when retailers start doing this it's a sign they've been notified of an impending price drop by Sony.

But the Batman bundles still being priced at $449/$399 with a release date of June '15 would seem to indicate otherwise.

I was hoping for a permanent price drop this Spring, then if a Slim Uncharted 4 bundle came out in 2016 there might be a chance of it being $299-$329 by then.

A slim PS4...I still don't think that'll happen. It't small as it is and honestly any smaller and I think they'll start having problems keeping everything cooled. It already runs pretty hot IMO.

idk, just seems like a given, it'd be a huge departure from a longstanding tradition not to have one. And I'm pretty sure the PS3 still runs warmer than the PS4.

Even if it's just an inch and does away with those stupid angled edges I'd be happy, guess we'll just have to see what they're able to do with the first 20nm shrink.

I'd fully expect one by the 2nd shrink, this gen will definitely last at least 8-10 years.

One reason you got a slim before was the old consoles were overly bulky to begin with and it's cheaper to ship a smaller console. I have a feeling that with the PS4 they cut away all they are willing to.

Even if there is no Slim in 2015, a nano-meter shrink to either 20nm in late 2015 or even 14nm/16nm in late 2016 + halving of the amount of GDDR5 chips from 16 to 8 is all but inevitable because these will result in lower power consumption, simplified mainboard design, smaller heatsink; and all of these will contribute to lower manufacturing costs over time. Secondly, the PS4 can't remain with only 500GB of HDD space once it approaches its mid-cycle. Games continue to grow in size and clearly 500GB isn't enough. It's difficult to predict if all of these changes will happen simultaneously and/or if Sony/MS will skip the 20nm shrink but there is no doubt that both consoles can be made smaller. At the very least a major re-spin/re-packaging of all the components inside will happen soon because of the financial benefits. Think about it, if Sony/MS can save $40-50 on manufacturing costs, that starts to add up quickly.

Obviously not concrete proof, but evidence says they will have a slim at some point.

I wouldn't put much stock in that article's prediction for 20nm. This article has good information on why that won't occur:

http://techsoda.com/no-20nm-graphics-amd-nvidia/
One month after the ExtremeTech article was released, in April 2012, an EE Times article reported that TSMC would only be offering one process at 20-nm. This was well down from their four process offerings at 28nm – three low-power and one high-performance.
TSMC initially planned to offer two 20-nm processes, presumably a high performance process and a low-power process.
But, after some development, TSMC determined that there was not a noticeable performance difference between the two 20-nm processes.

Each node can be further “tweaked” for high performance or low power, so you can have 28nm HP (High Performance – for stuff like graphics cards) or 28nm LP (Low Power – for stuff like phones) etc. So which one did they decide on? Well that was never really in doubt after the name was leaked – 20-SoC. SoC stands for “system on chip”, i.e. the things you find in your smartphones.

20-SoC is not optimized for high-performance graphics chips – and although both AMD and Nvidia are big customers of TSMC’s, the industry has rapidly moved on to ultra-mobile products where low power is much more desirable than ultimate performance. More importantly, Apple is an awful lot bigger and has a lot more money than both AMD and Nvidia combined.
Let’s see what TSMC says about their 20nm performance –
TSMC’s 20nm process technology can provide 30 percent higher speed, 1.9 times the density, or 25 percent less power than its 28nm technology. TSMC 20nm technology is the manufacturing process behind a wide array of applications that run the gamut from tablets and smartphones to desktops and servers.
I’m sure you noticed the lack of mention of graphics – but the important part is the performance. TSMC claims 30% higher speed, but that’s compared to their low-power 28nm process! Compared to their high-performance process it would barely be 10% faster, if anything. I believe TSMC’s 28nm HP would likely be faster for graphics cards than their 20nm-SoC.

So TSMC will only have one 20nm process called 20-SoC and it will be tweaked specifically for ultra-mobile products. It took a while for this to sink in and nobody really believed it. With every new node comes new graphics chips, simple as that – so something would be done to make 20nm viable for graphics surely?

I can see a slim Xbox one for sure but not the ps4. I don't think they can go much smaller.
They need to up the hard drive from 500gb to 1tb or support external hard drives like the Xbox one does.

Yes I know you can manually swap out the ps4 drive but how many people own a ps4 that have never opened a pc case let alone a console? I'm willing to bet most of them

Swapping out the hd is your best bet. All you have to do is slide the left panel off and unscrew a few screws. It only goes in one way so its not like people can mess it up royally. Worst case is you strip a screw. I wish I could swap out the x1 HD too because I have a 1tb laying around somewhere.

I don't really care if the PS4 ever supports external drives, I'm much happier being able to swap out the internal drive. I don't want annoying drives dangling off my console. It would be nice if they supported the option, but I wouldn't use it. In fact I will probably immediately upgrade my PS4 to 2TB when I get it later this year, saves me the trouble of backing anything up.

I don't think they have a 2tb drive that fits it without some modification. Could be now but last I checked it needed modification.

This drive will fit just fine, it's 9.5mm. There's an even cheaper option if you're willing to crack open an external drive enclosure (tends to void the warranty though).

Might want to search around for info because not all drives work in the ps4. Some who bought the
1tb Samsung spinpoint couldn't get it to boot in the ps4 after installing the os from the USB.

So, it's kinda gone under the radar out here in North America, but Toukiden: Kiwami released on PS4 recently.

Toukiden is a game in the same genre as Monster Hunter, and one of the most popular Vita games in Japan. It's worth mentioning that this sub-genre doesn't have a lot of games on home consoles (the games are usually made for handhelds) so Toukiden Kiwami for PS4, is one of the only home console options available for this type of game.
- The only other home console hunter game released in the last couple years I can think of, is Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate on the Wii U, which released in March of 2013.

There is a demo for Toukiden Kiwami up for PS4, so I gave it a quick try. Some of my impressions were:
- The game flow is pretty streamlined for a hunter game. There seems to be less emphasis on grinding materials and tweaking your load-out, so that you can go into the next mission more quickly.
- When you kill things, you might find a mitama (soul of a friendly warrior spirit), that you can equip to your weapon. Mitama each grant different stat bonuses and special abilities. One might have abilities that let you attack faster, or another with a poison effect. The mitama gain experience from battle, and level up for stronger bonuses.
- The targeting system is a bit better than Monster Hunter, since you can be locked on, but still aim your attacks at specific monster parts.
- You don't have to chase monsters across zones.
- It's made by Tecmo Koei, the people who make the "Warriors" games, and you can tell its them visually. Lots of Feudal Japan stuff, and pretty females. Monsters are based on Japanese folklore.... I think it's nice looking game, but that said, it's a visual upgrade from a Vita game, so it's not throwing around fancy "next gen" graphic effects all over.
- NPC AI seems pretty good.
- The market for this in the west wasn't that big, so voice acting is in Japanese with English subtitles.
- There's a good amount of weapon types, each having it's unique feel. Weapon attacks and combos are a bit more deliberate feeling than some of Tecmo Koei's other stuff. There's weapon tutorials for each weapon type, to try things out in the demo.

I've only played the demo a little bit, but my initial impressions were good enough that I'm considering getting the game at full price.

I checked out some reviews, and it was interesting. Japanese reviews were very high, like 9s and 10s, but in the west its mostly 7s, with reviewers mostly praising the game, but taking a few points off for doing things typical of the hunter sub-genre; Such as smaller numbered zone areas. Thing on that, though, is if the numbered zones were taken out of the PS4 version, it wouldn't have been able to keep cross-play with the PS Vita version. Which reminds me, it's cross-play and cross-save to it's Vita version (not cross-buy though, which is too bad).

I guess my biggest reservation is just the price. It'll be hard for me to pay the extra $20 for the PS4 version of the game, vs Vita. Hopefully it'll have a sale or something around when I finish up Bloodborne.

So I turned on my PS4 and noticed it had a lot of notifications about games failing to save to online storage that I hadn't noticed before. When I looked at it I found that Mortal Kombat X saved match replays and such to the tune of 300MB and that Drive Club settings and such added up to 300MB. Needless to say with every game going to 10MB+, space was done.Apparently it had been trying to upload new saves for a while and failing. Do they really think giving us 1GB for cloud saves is enough?

Has anyone heard anything about adding to this? I mean icloud gives me 5GB for free, onedrive gives me 15GB for free. I'm paying $60/yr(less with deals on the subscription cards but still paying) and they can only give me 1GB? Heck I can get 20GB for $1/month with iCloud. For $2/month I can get 100GB with One Drive. Surely there's a way to give us more than 1GB when we're paying for the service.

I also noticed this a while ago but I thought it was a bug or system error and I have not bothered to look into it. They should offer more space even drop box gives you more space for having an account.

I've been seeing this for a while too, with no indication of why. It would be nice if the message said something about "out of cloud space" instead of just unable to upload.

i have absolutely no interest in cloud saves for saved games. just 100% not necessary to me with local saving.

but then again, i don't care about cloud crap in general. never used it before and don't plan on it. i prefer to have control over all of my stuff locally.

It's useful for me because I can have my profile on my friends ps4 or xb1 for that matter and grab my save file off the cloud server. Especially useful in mortal kombat x when you have a lot of crypt unlocks.

Cloud saves have been handy when I accidentally overwrite the wrong save file.. Done it a couple times in MLB since I have multiple players.
