I disagree. I don't feel that Q4 is as "BOO!ish" as Doom 3 was. In Doom 3, the enemies randomly teleported in out of nowhere and came straight at you. In Q4, the enemies come to attack you, and actually hide and try to dodge your shots. I think Q4 has much better gameplay than Doom 3.

It runs almost too smooth , at UQ(@1600x1200 2xQ HQ AA, 16anis....512mb nessesary my butt) and I still need to have VS on to prevent constant spiltting dispite having fixxed the refresh at 75hz. The game never ever slows down even when things are going crazy, only autosave causes a noticeable split second hiccup. I hope the mod scene explodes for this game because the only thing that makes this not Doom 3.5 are the stroggs. I loved Quake 2 and Doom 3 alot, so I still love this game, but I also loved Quake 3 Arena so I having an inner conflict.

Help! How do you kill the big fat guy that controls the soylent fluids?

Run around him to the other side while dodging his arms and then go up to the next level when you get to the other side. There will be a console that you push that will activate a tube that is shoved in its mouth and fills it with fluid and makes his guts explode, yummy

YAAAYY! i finally got it today just stopped playing. fun, fun, fun. SP is well done but less than F.E.A.R and MP still has a classic feel.

Wow, after hearing all the initial "reviews" I was a little worried that Q4 was gonna disappoint. I picked it up this afternoon at BB and have played about 2 hours worth while also trying to deal with my wife and 4 month old son. Here's what I think so far:

1- Awesome graphics and smooth gameplay. I'm still trying to get some miles out of my 9800 vid card and with Cat 5.9's installed and the options cranked up, the framerate is much smoother than D3.

2- The atmoshere is kinda dark (like D3) but not as much so and the ability to use the flashlight all the time really enhances the whole industrial feel of the Strogg environment.

3- Don't flame me here but I'm kind of reminded of Unreal 2 while playing these early levels. That's a good thing as far as I'm concerned. U2 got alot of bad press but I thought that game was a graphical treat and way fun to play. Q4 is a real hoot so far!

4- For anyone looking for something "groundbreaking", don't get your hopes up. Unless they start making cerebral implants or something, I'm not so sure what game developers can do to expound on the tried and true FPS formula. Q4 has lots of action, sweet graphics and VERY smooth framerate and gameplay.

I have always been a real big fan of the straightforward first person shooter and I don't understand how some people can blast a game if the multiplayer isn't to their liking. I've got nothing against MP, I just prefer to slog through a game at my own pace by myself. Q4 was created as a FPS sequel to Q2 and at that it is magnificent. Id games have always had a unique look to them. The textures may not be as crisp as Half-Life or Far Cry but the atmospehere is dark, creepy, well defined and all Id. Raven did a good job on this IMHO and fans of Q2 will love Q4. To sum it up so far....Q4=a lot of Q2, a little D3 and a hint of U2. That's a formula for lots of mindless shooting fun as far as I'm concerned.

If you think the multi is a joke, you have not played it enough. It is great.. you get the fast paced action of q3a and if you like the q2 style head over to q4dm7 the edge and that will bring back some memories. The tournment style is best if you were a bigger q2 fan then q3a. The 1 vs 1 is bad ass I really like it. If you think your good enough find me on one of the edge as Oddjob... I will own your ass!

Well I was planning on playing this game today. Fry's was out so I went to CompUSA. Only to get home and see a nice water-type mark on disc 2. The install wouldnt finish on the disc so I returned it.

Now I get home and I'm installing and after disc 2 I reach in to get disc 3 and notice ITS DISC 2! lol. They gave me two disc 2s, im missing disc 3. Seriously some bad luck there I think.

Once I get a install that actually works I bet multi will be fun.

Played online and not convinced at all it's anywhere close to Q3.
Models/Skin are damn awful to say the least. Who in their right mind would select orange and green as team colours !
Add quad or regen and you have an extremely difficult time trying to figure out if it's enemy or team mate.
If you don't hit the jump pad exactly straight on you don't jump from what I have found, where as Q3 pads were nice and big and easy to use.
I'll give a patch or two and see how it does but I'm not over impressed right now.
The single player game is very good, which I know is the whole concept of the game. similar to how Q2 was.
I guess I've just been spoilt on Q3 for soo many years.....
end of rant

Only played 10 mins of SP, then went straight at the MP to see how it compares to Q3. For the most part I agree with you, but I'm thinking over time you'll get used to it. I hope so anyway, cause right now its quite a shock...even though it is pretty similar to Q3. Agree jump pads seem small, continually feel like i'm going to miss them or finding it hard to actually get a feeling of WHERE on the pad exactly launches me and WHEN it will launch me. The physics are also a bit different...they dont feel right, but likely just because I'm not used to them yet. The movement is just different. I did notice, however, that you can pick up speed really quick in a few forward jumps (compared to the effort it took in Q3) Also interesting in that now only certain weapons can ZOOM...the default machine gun and rail...and the MG actually changes firing properties to single shot once you zoom...wierd and cool.

It just seems like my beloved Q3 (which I haven't played online forever) has grown up and gotten too complex...at least until I get used to it.

Well, I scanned this whole thread looking for performance with an X700 Pro. I found comments saying this game works well with the 9800 Pro and 6600 GT. I suspect the X700 Pro is almost the PCI-E version of the 9800 Pro so I'm happy.

I just wish they'd come out with a demo.

Just beginning Quake 4: "I've played the first few levels since I have to wake up early tomorrow. Basically, Quake4 is Doom3 done right. <-for all you Doom3 haters. You guys should enjoy this game, there is a light on the gun.

It's still dark. And enemies do seem to spawn out of nowhere. But the AI is vastly improved. The don't have a set path and they shoot while they are getting cover. Most of the enemies get cover as well. Even the big ones that just charge you. Midst charge they take cover and try to surprise you. The graphics are a bit better, but only small details gained big improvements, so you might not notice too much. Textures still look kinda crappy. Inferface is very Doom3, so are the options. Quake4 is very Doom3ish and it seems to struggle to distinguish itself. Everywhere I look I see Doom3, Doom3, Doom3. So I would say, expect Doom3 with all the complaints taken into consideration. We now fight along others, whose AI isn't retarded. Music plays at times during the game ulike Doom3. And there is action galore with multiple enemies and allies on screen.

One of the big things that this game doesn't have that Doom3 did is great atmosphere. Although this game does try to scare you,... it's... not scarey. Nothing like Doom3's atmosphere. Action is this Quake4's main focus.

So far I like this game, but my biggest disappointment is how similar the textures and interface are to Doom3. "

Just beat Quake 4: It's basically Quake 2 with improved Doom3 graphics and without the annoying loading times. The story is crappy and nearly non-existant. It's unmotivating, so all you have to go by is action and the hope that the game ends soon.

It's a bit repetitive. If we do this, the Strogg fall. Almost there... Sht happens and now we need to do this and the Strogg fall. Almost there... Sht happens and this repeats until the end.

The action is pretty good, decent challenge, no annoying, but I wish it had the double shotty. The final bosses are also a decent challenge, but sometimes seem easier than fighting a horde of enemies due to the BFG. It's harder than Doom3's boss.

The vehicles are a joke and were just a stupid inclusion to the game. They are pointess, easy and non-entertaining. Just trying to extend the game length, although the length would do well without these annoying sections.

Graphics are ok as I've mentioned before, but the biggest updates to the engine seem most noticeable in people's heads. They now show pigment, which adds a lot. And they also increase the polys so we now get nice more human looking heads instead of Doom3's philips screwdriver heads.. And even though sometimes the textures arent' the best, at times the game can look very, very real. But these moments are rare. One of the things I love about these graphics is how nice the hands look. Better than any other game to date.

i have a feeling that there will be an expansion out a while from now that will somehow (quake3 arena vs quake 3 team arena. somehow team arena was just kickass compared to plain old quake arena) make multiplayer more fun that you guys say it is now.

Well I can't say enough about this game.

Its simply awesome.

Its quake2 and everything that made it such a great game, but even better. First game in a long time where I can't stop playing and look forward to playing.

I think its more like Elite Force (also by Raven) with improved Doom 3 graphics. Just change the main character (and his military mates) uniforms to starfleet uniforms and rename the Strogg to the Borg and voila... a new Elite Force sequel!
