Just beginning Quake 4: "I've played the first few levels since I have to wake up early tomorrow. Basically, Quake4 is Doom3 done right. <-for all you Doom3 haters. You guys should enjoy this game, there is a light on the gun.
It's still dark. And enemies do seem to spawn out of nowhere. But the AI is vastly improved. The don't have a set path and they shoot while they are getting cover. Most of the enemies get cover as well. Even the big ones that just charge you. Midst charge they take cover and try to surprise you. The graphics are a bit better, but only small details gained big improvements, so you might not notice too much. Textures still look kinda crappy. Inferface is very Doom3, so are the options. Quake4 is very Doom3ish and it seems to struggle to distinguish itself. Everywhere I look I see Doom3, Doom3, Doom3. So I would say, expect Doom3 with all the complaints taken into consideration. We now fight along others, whose AI isn't retarded. Music plays at times during the game ulike Doom3. And there is action galore with multiple enemies and allies on screen.
One of the big things that this game doesn't have that Doom3 did is great atmosphere. Although this game does try to scare you,... it's... not scarey. Nothing like Doom3's atmosphere. Action is this Quake4's main focus.
So far I like this game, but my biggest disappointment is how similar the textures and interface are to Doom3. "
Just beat Quake 4: It's basically Quake 2 with improved Doom3 graphics and without the annoying loading times. The story is crappy and nearly non-existant. It's unmotivating, so all you have to go by is action and the hope that the game ends soon.
It's a bit repetitive. If we do this, the Strogg fall. Almost there... Sht happens and now we need to do this and the Strogg fall. Almost there... Sht happens and this repeats until the end.
The action is pretty good, decent challenge, no annoying, but I wish it had the double shotty. The final bosses are also a decent challenge, but sometimes seem easier than fighting a horde of enemies due to the BFG. It's harder than Doom3's boss.
The vehicles are a joke and were just a stupid inclusion to the game. They are pointess, easy and non-entertaining. Just trying to extend the game length, although the length would do well without these annoying sections.
Graphics are ok as I've mentioned before, but the biggest updates to the engine seem most noticeable in people's heads. They now show pigment, which adds a lot. And they also increase the polys so we now get nice more human looking heads instead of Doom3's philips screwdriver heads.. And even though sometimes the textures arent' the best, at times the game can look very, very real. But these moments are rare. One of the things I love about these graphics is how nice the hands look. Better than any other game to date.
