I'm obligated to get this game the day it comes out. Besides, I need to hear about how FEAR runs compared to the demo, the demo was very choppy and had a lot of problems when I played it. I have never preordered a game, but I plan to pick up Q4 today

I saw it at E3 and wasn't really impressed. Quake Wars looked MUCH more interesting.

If it's anything like Doom 3, IIRC you set r_mode to -1 and then change the r_customWidth and r_customHeight parameters to the desired values. I can't remember if you have to separately change the FOV or not.

Agree with the Quake Wars comment based on videos I've seen.

People really need to stop posting opinions if they havn't actually played the game though.

I finally got it. The DVD edition is sitting here taunting me at my desk. I really can't wait to get home and play it.

A far superior game to Doom 3. Not much of the dark lighting BS. Fairly simple and linear, but I enjoy the SP and I normally dont like SP (didnt even like Halo much).

As far as MP, somewhat hard to find really good servers so far, and the CTF maps are uninspired

So far, I'm really enjoying it. I'm up to the level "Nexus Hall Tunnels". I haven't tried multiplayer yet.

It's much more enjoyable than Doom 3, for sure. The AI is pretty solid, maps are well-designed. The vehicle levels are well done, too, though the physics & steering on the hover tank took me a few minutes to get used to. Best of all, it's really fast-paced, unlike Doom 3 which sometimes crawled along.

Graphics seem to run a bit smoother than Doom 3 for me, using the same settings I ran on Doom 3.

Amusingly, they've ripped a lot off from Aliens, like the designs of the spaceships, dropships, and walkers.

If you have a Fry's nearby, it's $37.99 there.

Does anyone get these texture glitches when you're playing quake 4? I have the same problem in doom 3 (which I believe uses the same engine). They look like polygonish/checkerboarded black shapes. I have an x800 pro and I updated all the drivers. doom 3 worked fine when i had my 9800 pro. *shrug*

Edit:

C:\Program Files\id Software\Quake 4\q4base\Quake4Config.cfg

with these values:

seta r_customHeight "1050"
seta r_customWidth "1680"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_aspectRatio "2"

...I added that to the other thread you asked about that in as well...

Now that the tech stuff is out of the way... The SP game is a blast, period. Is it the best FPS shooter ever made? no... Is it fun, and should you get it? yes. I played for about 4 hours straight tonight, and I really enjoyed myself. It does have a few touches of Doom3, but overall the game is much more fun, and it doesn't wear you out the way Doom3 does. I really like the pacing of the game so far, and it does a great job of keeping it in the fun zone. After a few more hours with it I get much more of a Halo/Quake II hybrid feel from the game than I initially did. The squad element and vehicles are very much in the vein of Halo, while the overall look and feel of the game is classic Quake II with a new engine.

Just checked the prices in the UK. That special edition is going for 50 quid, ROFL. Or you can buy the standard version for 27 quid. Are they taking the p1ss?

I've played the first few levels since I have to wake up early tomorrow. Basically, Quake4 is Doom3 done right. <-for all you Doom3 haters. You guys should enjoy this game, there is a light on the gun.

It's still dark. And enemies do seem to spawn out of nowhere. But the AI is vastly improved. The don't have a set path and they shoot while they are getting cover. Most of the enemies get cover as well. Even the big ones that just charge you. Midst charge they take cover and try to surprise you. The graphics are a bit better, but only small details gained big improvements, so you might not notice too much. Textures still look kinda crappy. Inferface is very Doom3, so are the options. Quake4 is very Doom3ish and it seems to struggle to distinguish itself. Everywhere I look I see Doom3, Doom3, Doom3. So I would say, expect Doom3 with all the complaints taken into consideration. We now fight along others, whose AI isn't retarded. Music plays at times during the game ulike Doom3. And there is action galore with multiple enemies and allies on screen.

One of the big things that this game doesn't have that Doom3 did is great atmosphere. Although this game does try to scare you,... it's... not scarey. Nothing like Doom3's atmosphere. Action is this Quake4's main focus.

So far I like this game, but my biggest disappointment is how similar the textures and interface are to Doom3.

Picked the game up this afternoon and played multi for a few hours. It's definitely MP Quake... which is a good thing. I played Q2 and Q3 multi for years, I still play Q3 quite a bit and this game didn't dissapoint me, well except for one thing. Is it just me, or are the graphics unbelievably bad? I mean all I heard about D3 was how great the graphics were, but if they were like this I'm not seeing it. HL2 and FarCry looked far superior IMO. The player models are fine, but the artwork of the maps SUCKS.

I liked doom3 a lot. I thought the sound for doom3 was top notch including the very minimal music. I should have q4 tomorrow.

Picked it up yesterday and played for a while. SP is pretty fun. Nothing too involving as far as the plot goes but that was what I expected. It is Q2ish (which I loved) and the ability to get in turrets/vehicles makes it that much more fun.

MP is definitely where this game shines. Fast paced in-your-face action death match with plenty of weapons and power-ups. Gota love it. Can't wait for the mods...

I played the MP for a few hours last night and here are some of my initial impressions:

This game is fairly fast paced, with nice weapons and graphics. It's basically Quake 3 upgraded to the Doom 3 engine, which is pretty much what I was expecting. I'm glad they brought the nailgun back, and oh how I have missed the railgun. Being a big time UT2k4 player, I really miss my dodging and the ability to boost my teammates across the map (instagib), but I think Quake 4 will keep me occupied until UT2k7 comes out.

There are a few things that really annoy me though, and I'm a little surprised nobody else has mentioned it. First, any time you make a change in the settings, you have to restart the entire game to get the settings to take effect. I guess this is the same as in Doom 3, but its just a pain to have to restart the game every time. Second, the gore effects are really poor. I always thought Quake 3 had great gore effects (and sounds), so every time you railed someone they exploded into a mass of bones and goo. Not in this game...I just don't get same satisfaction in Q4 when I frag someone. Third, the range of mouse sensitivity is terrible. At one point it is way too sensitive, and then the very next notch down forces you to slide the mouse across your entire desk to turn around. I'm gonna have to tweak with my windows mouse settings to see if I can figure out how to get mouse acceleration working. Finally, where are the RAIL servers!! I played on a dozen servers last night and didn't come across one rail only server. This was by far my favorite Q3 gametype (and UT for that matter) and I was dissapointed that I couldn't play this last night. I guess it is going to take some time for more servers to sprout up.

Anyways, it seems like I have more negatives than positives, but I'm just picky about my FPS' and will always be comparing anything new that comes along to UT. I think that with some new maps, better servers, and just a little more time to get used to the game, that Quake 4 will be one of my favorites.

Personally I liked Doom 3. I wasn't expecting it to change the world and it didn't, it just gave me monsters to blast and pretty stuff to look at.

I got Quake 4 last night. I'm so tired of these shooters that try to be all intelligent. Like Half Life 2. It was a cool game but really it was basically shoot, load level, shoot and solve puzzle, load level, with a couple of ridiculously long verhicle sequences throw in. To hell with that. Give me some guns and stuff to blow up, make it pretty, and wrap a decent storyline around it.

Quake 4 does this perfectly. The production values are awesome and it runs great on my modest system (754 a64 3000+, GF6600GT, 1.5GB RAM). I don't do FPS or anything, but I know slowdown when I see it and I can play this baby at 1024x768 on High Quality with no problems.

most of what everyone says is spot on.. and i agree with the poster above about sensitivity settings.. i'm havinga hell of a time getting a good sens to work. and make sure you dont have m_smooth set above 1, it just makes everything more laggy.

my fps aren't great, i'm getting in the 40's in heavy firefights. and on the q3dm17 remake its pretty crummy. i have a amd 2500-m @ 2.3ghz, 6800nu OC unlocked, pc3200 2x512mb ram.

also, i dont know of a mouseaccel option either, i haven't seen it in any of the cvar's i looked over.

and for having to restart after setting things up.. just set up all your options the way you want and do vid_restart in console just like q3.

lastly.. com_allowconsole 1 to make console just ~ , default to bring down console is ctrl+alt+~

Just beat it. Level Graphics and player models are awsome, but the weapon effects are absolute crap (the lightning gun from Quake 3 arena is way better, Unreal 2 also did a way way better job on a darkmatter gun, everyhing else is blah blah blah.) seriously, they didnt even bother with dynamic lights on weapons beside the barrel flash.

80% of the gameplay is the same "BOO!" tactics as used in Doom 3, so if you diliked Doom 3 you'll hate Quake 4. The singleplayer has its awsome moments, but the multiplayer levels are as boring as the weapons. No bots as was mentions so I've got to deal with douchebags who live and breath this game before I'm uber 1337 at it like they are. They did such an amazing job on the models, they all look sooo good!!!.

It runs almost too smooth , at UQ(@1600x1200 2xQ HQ AA, 16anis....512mb nessesary my butt) and I still need to have VS on to prevent constant spiltting dispite having fixxed the refresh at 75hz. The game never ever slows down even when things are going crazy, only autosave causes a noticeable split second hiccup. I hope the mod scene explodes for this game because the only thing that makes this not Doom 3.5 are the stroggs. I loved Quake 2 and Doom 3 alot, so I still love this game, but I also loved Quake 3 Arena so I having an inner conflict.
