I'm still having a blast with the MP portion of this game. Haven't even tried the SP yet. One question...where are the rail only servers!?!? I haven't found one yet!!

I just finished single player. I really enjoyed it! The ending was a tad... lacking, but all in all, i enjoyed myself every minute i played!

(and i really disliked doom 3)

Those people who found the end boss easy or were dissapointed in it. What skill difficulty did you play?

I played 3rd difficulty and had some trouble with the end boss. Not a lot, but significantly more than any other recent FPS games. I reloaded probably 10 times. I died several times to the dark matter fragment grenade shots and then I kept dying in that 3rd stage of the fight because one of the mobs kept sniping me with his railgun while I was moving. All in all, I felt very satisfied when I beat the encounter. I'm wondering if the encounter was easier in the difficulties you guys played in.

I wanted to write a solid review of the game, but everytime I try, I get distracted by something else.

While reading reviews, I constantly kept noticing reviewers pointing out that the single player experience was not "up to par" with games such as Half-Life 2. Now, I'm not questioning how good the single player portion of HL2 was, but I am questioning just what the hell Quake4 didn't do? HL2 had cheesy vehicle levels, Q4 has cheesy vehicle levels. HL2 had random conversations, Q4 had random conversations. The majority of both games was spent making it from point a to point b while fighting monsters. HL2 didn't have a single battle that compares to the boss fights in Q4.

By now you can probably guess my stance on the single player portion, I enjoyed it a lot. I also agree with Vian in that the game 'feels' more like "Doom3 done right" than it does Quake4. I also absolutely loved the graphics in the game. I took screenshots of almost every single elevator ride. I thought those banshee chicks were insanely cool with their wall mounted deployment capsule thingies.

I hope to write up something more fleshed out once I've beaten FEAr and SS2.

i just played quake 4 for a little while MP. just wanted to post for those looking for video card performance.

i'm running a AGP x850xt pe with settings @ 1600x1200, everything high and 4x AA.

i didin't know how to tell the frame rate but I can compare to other games, take BF2 for example, I run at the same settings and Quake 4 runs just as smooth, I know it's over 30fps. So the 850 should do you good.

as for a review, the game seemed like quake 3 with better graphics and a slower firing rocket launcher. it felt kinda weird.

i feel like they could have just came out with an expansion/update for quake 3 that incorporated the doom 3 engine and then brought out the single player quake 4 experience as just a seperate game with no MP.

Wow, where to begin. Guess I'll jump right in.

I found the boss guy at the end (nexus) very very easy. I played on medium difficulty as I did the entire game. I died several times at the spider bosses and the electric guy...

Several times to each.

I killed the final boss guy who is supposed to be the creme de la creme, the toughest guy in the game, on my first try with close to full health. He was simply too easy compared to previous level bosses.

Now for the comparisons to HL2.

Quake 4 had cheesy vehicles, Halflife 2 had good vehicles that responded pretty well to input. You pilot a mech and a tank in quake 4, you pilot a buggy and a swamp boat in hl2. The implementation of the vehicles in hl2 was just better.

"The majority of both games was spent making it from point a to point b while fighting monsters. HL2 didn't have a single battle that compares to the boss fights in Q4."

uhh, what? HL2 had the fights with the rocket launchers against the mechanized vehicles that are walking around on their huge legs. That is an awesome fight.
HL2 has fights where you shoot down helicopters with either mounted machine guns or rocket launchers. Again, very fun.
HL2 has mobile standalone machine gun sentries you can place at points to repel enemy invasions as well as a handheld weapon that allows you manipulate the environment (anti grav gun). Quake4 has neither of these.
Quake4 has fights against spider droids (fun) and.. umm, oh yeah, that gorilla looking thing. They were entertaining fights, but nowhere near the caliber of the halflife 2 fights against large enemies.

Overall I liked Quake 4. Probably wont replay it, whereas I replay halflife 2 frequently. The thing I like most about halflife 2 is that it is beautiful, has gorgeous outside areas that are brightly lit and easy to see, and has no slowdowns on most pcs. Doom3/quake4 were so dark to the point that 80% of the screen at any given time is either in shadows or not lit. Not hard to have gorgeous graphics when you are only drawing 20% of the screen. Halflife 2 has a few dark spots (the mines and underground at the enemy complex), but most of the game is outside or in bright buildings where its easy to see everywhere.

With quake 4, I had to regularly F9 back to redo an area because I was getting killed by something I couldnt even see. Same thing with doom3. My contrast and brightness is calibrated correctly too, so its not a lcd problem on my end. Frustrated me also that the flashlight was only on the blaster and machine gun, yet you rarely use those weapons past halfway through the game. You walk into a room and get assaulted by 4 mobs at once, each will take 2-3 shotgun blasts at least, you aren't going to be wielding the machine gun.

Fun game, but nowhere near the caliber of quake4. I do find it more fun though than FEAR. FEAR has no storyline. Its just random walking around in warehouses and then going slomo and killing mobs in rooms. Rinse, repeat. No storyline worth following, no tactics, no big boss fights (so far). Kind of a waste of $50.00 so far.

Max of 12 (i find anything over that to be ridiculous)
Still tweaking it a bit.

Quake 4 just keeps quitting on me, quite regaularily.

I'll be playing along, then *poof* im on a high-gamma desktop. On the tank mission i get the tank noise repeating, but its not like a normal sound-repeating problem as usually there it locks up for a bit first, this just insta-quits. tried open-AL and default sound settings, no difference.

7800 GTX w/ 81.85
Epox 9NPA+ Ultra w/ 6.66
Audigy w/ whatever the creative website thinks is latest, 5.12?
