Very excellent, LANMAN! Hope the new racks are ready in slightly less time than the prototypes were ready in.

They should be because the machine that cuts the steel can do all of them in one setting without any modifications.
"Cookie Cutter"

Most of the problems with getting them on time is the slacker who they hired to bend the steel after it's cut.

Let it be known, if they get another contract, the next time it will include a suspense date with a stiff penalty! :|

Too bad there wasn't a place to host it that had free electricity like when I used to live on campus in college.

One of the reasons for setting up the Support pages was to pay for projects like this one.

It will take a while, before the money comes in, but as soon as it does, I'll start with little donations to help paying for the electricity.

LANMAN,

Maybe it is worthwhile to purchase some solar panels. It will be costly at first, but in the end it will save money.

If they could put out that much electric power, I would probably consider it.

I thinking about wind power. It seems the wind is constantly moving around here, but sheeshh..
last I heard one of those power producing windmills would be a heck of a lot more $$ then what
I've invested into the entire project!!

I've already called the local electrician to get a quote for more Amps on the pole and rewire the main line coming into
the building. Most of the wiring is still above ground, so that will go underground also if I have him redo it.

A whole lot of money (i.e. once you get batteries and a DC-to-AC power inverter, it will be at the very minimum, US$10,000, if not a lot more). :Q

I've seen some wind generators for less than $10k, including the grid-connector thingy. Will have to see if I can still find it somewhere in the mess of bookmarks.

For $10k, you're buying a small industrial generator, which can power a number of households or some small industry.
There are also generators, esp. made for one or two households. These are a bit cheaper.

How much does electricity cost you?
I was looking through a catalog and a 400watt wind generator cost $650, that would power about 4 boards, but it would also take decades to pay for itself. Go online and find a page on how to make a fuel cell. Just hook it up to your water line, do a bit of electroloysis, and you have yourself free power (minus the very small cost of electricity for the electroloysis). Other than that, being hooked up to the grid sounds like the best way.

Even if you had nearly 100% effiency (which you won't) ,a fuel cell will cost more electricity than it makes.

Aren't fuel cells meant for vehicles where fuel storage is a problem?(& you obviously couldn't hookup a power cable....unless its a train or tram)

$650 sounds better than $10k for a wind generator

Right now it takes as much electricity to get pure hydrogen as the process of creating water gives off. The only reason they are looking at fuel cells is becuase they can be a fast way to fill your car and they can hold a large ammount of power as opposed to batteries.

Anyway I looked into solar power once but that was for my car. I am still thinking about it. I want to power a few fans to keep the inside of my car cool in the summer.

Rack 1
AMD 1700 x2
P4 1.7
P4 1.0
AMD 1.3 T-bird

Second rack has all the components installed; just taking a bit longer installing the OS. I ran out of momentary
switches.. (Damn radio shack!! ) so they should have more in stock today.

Good news for the future of the rack though. I just go word of a new data center being built by my office.
Ton's of room and A/C!! I'll ask the owners if they would work a deal on the electric bill if we could install a
few racks there! Project should begin spring of 04'

It's sounding better every time, LANMAN!

Now, for a quick question (don't get your hopes up, though I doubt this would anyway )... Would it be possible for you guys to use a 500MHz "FCPGA" (I guess that's what it is, it's a socket 370 anyway) Celeron? I might (that's where the uncertainty comes in) be getting a new processor to put in my ECS P6STM (a higher clocked Celeron, probably), and if I do, I would be glad to donate this older one to the cause - if you could use it.

FWIW, it doesn't overclock worth you-know-what in the board it's in now, but that could be because of the cheap-'n-crappy HSF, or the motherboard, or both.

If its a Celeron 500 then it is not a FC version but the older PPGA version, same core as the Celeron 366 S370
FC PGA versions didn't start until the 533A upwards

If you want to donate it, I think we have a dual board that has only one processor, so your would have a home.

Ah, thanks for the clarification.

Glad to hear it would have a home waiting for it if I am able to send it.
