Yea, as far as I'm concerned, just one or two of those dual xeons would be great for me, and they'd even fit under my desk (and not blow the fuses in the breaker when they would be turned on!).
But then I see those SGI servers with 512 processors and many terabytes of RAM, and I wonder how long it will take before desktops are that powerful; it will probably take more than 10 years, but you never know...

It wasn't that long ago that our PCs had Megabytes of disk space, while we dreamed of having Gigabytes of it. NOW we do have the Gigabytes and we're wanting Terabytes of storage.

In both cases, servers(or networks) had/have that higher amount of storage capacity.

It won't be but a year, maybe two, before you will have a Terabyte+ drive in your PC and be wanting the next iteration of storage capacity.

I have a PII AOpen LX chipset ATX mbrd here with dead PS2 & keyboard ports ,I'm gonna see if I can test the USB ports to see if they work.The mbrd supports upto a Celeron 533 (not A),SDRAM & has upto 83MHz FSB.

I'm in the UK,anyone want it for a cruncher if the USB ports work?

I just had to express my concerns to the company designing the rack. In the past I told them this project was a personal and
they didn't need to put me to the front of the line (Since they make tons of other stuff like laser car washers), but now I think
they could at least be a little considerate for the time we have spent.

We're only waiting for estimates and it shouldn't take as much time as solving rc5 to do it! :Q

I've seen the lazer tool they use to cut the steel, so once a order goes in, it shouldn't take long at all to punch out 5 or even 10
shelves!

Now...now....a fine wine just takes time. I'm LANMAN is just dying to get the shelving to place the stuff on....as we all are. The end result will be spectacular!

As many as it takes to occupy the motherboards we have now and a extra for growth. The first break will come when the order goes over 5 racks, so depending on the cost I personally would like to get 5 right from the start. That would be 30 motherboards! :Q

All the equipment is ready and waiting to be assembled so when they do arrive I should have all available motherboards running 24/7.

I TRIED E-MAILING YOU YESTERDAY MOARNING BUT MY E-MAIL DIDN'T WORK. I HAVEN'T HEARD EITHER . I ASKED MARK AND HE SAID HE HASN'T DONE IT YET. HE IS BEHIND ABOUT 20 QUOTES. WE REALLY GOT CLOBBERED WITH BUSINESS THE SUMMER AND WE STILL HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP YET. ONE OF OUR MAIN COMPETETORS WENT UNDER SO BUSINESS HAS REALLY PICKED UP. I WILL CHECK AGAIN TO DAY WHEN HE COMES IN. SORRY FOR THE INCONVIENIANCE.

So as you can understand the waiting period for the crack rack is justified. Guess you can chalk up another business as a ripple effect from 9/11, but at least the company I'm working with is on top of it, otherwise they wouldn't be getting the huge demand for great products. Just as Engineer has already said, I think the wait is going to be worth it when we "pop the cork on the first bottle!"

I'm just as excited to get these systems up and running as you all are, but I can't do anymore then what has already been done. Thanks for understanding.

I'll be going with a very low-cost solution initially, to get things sorted out, but once I'm up to 6 or 7 boards, I'll be wanting something a bit more permanent, so count me in for part of your order to help you past the "5" mark break.
