Hey! I know I promised I'd test out the BP6 quite a bit earlier.. I'm sorry. However, I just finished a round of tests and it seemed to take a Win2K install okay(no overclocking), so I'm gonna send it on out next week.

Config: BP6 w/ a pair of Celeron 400s & HSFs. If I can spare the ram, I'll send that along too.

w00t! More more more!

Any word on who wants to start on the actual configuration and anyone want to be an "ambassedor" of sorts to the other DC TeAms and see if they want to "purchase" time on the ENTERPRISE?

But for what would the money be used for? We would be also supporting other teams at the same time and then we surtenly wouldnt be helping ourselves. Maybe we should sell the time for someone within the team or for a mini team.

I would say this is a good suggestion, but limit the CPU time purchasing to Team AnandTech members. If the cluster runs Mosix, it would be easy to allow someone from Team AnandTech in another project to purchase time on x number of nodes for y number of days. Just create the x number of folders on one main computer, install their client into each folder, and start them up. They will automatically migrate to distribute the processing load among x number of nodes.

Actually I think that the Enterprise could also be an awesome mercenary (hired gun).

In other words a rapid response team. Bringing in the big guns whenever projects feel the pressure. Yup, YARRT (yet another rapid response team... TACO, bob970 and whatever he's got going and Enterprise).

Hmm, got to find some new words that match Enterprise to additionally represent it as YARRT.

Selling Wu's is not exactly the way I would put it nor would I want it to be presented that way. What I was suggesting is the D2OL, DF and the sort are also welcomed to participate in this project and they would be able to have the Rapid Response they needed for certian periods etc...

Certainly the power would and can be used for a multi-tude of projects at once, if thats the case then Mini-TeAms and such can use the x+y=z formula for supporting the ENTERPRISE through donations be it hardware or cash money via the BEOWULF account at PayPal.

I think that when all is said and done the people that contributed directly to the project should have a certain amount of voting power to accept or deny requests to use the machine and for what price or limit.

We need some things to do this. The concept I had was a pure homogeneous Beowulf like what U of Kentucky created only built on Abit BP6's with Celerons running at 550MHz.

The dream... (26GHz Beowulf)
24 - BP6
48 - 366@550
24x128MB PC100
96 - 10/100 NIC's
24 - 200w PS
24 - Floppies
24 - PCI VGA cards
A total of 97 10/100 ports of combined switches.
Enough KVM's to run it
Keyboards & mice

[/b]==============================================================+]

1. We need a Name for it. Check this thread.... >>>LINK<<<

2. There is a PayPal Account under TeAm_AT_Beowulf@scarieville.com, if you dont have hardware or shelving help with purchases.

3. The email account for it to run under is also TeAm_AT_Beowulf@scarieville.com.

4. We need technicians to help build configure and maintain a Linux Beowulf cluster of this size.

5. [/b]LANMAN has offered to host it provided he gets some support on shelving materials.

Okay, granted, this is a rather long post to be making, and yes, I've just quoted Shuxclams's first post in this entire thread, but I believe that this is necessary. Let's look at the original intent of this project: SETI@HOME. That's it, plain and simple. No splitting power for other projects, no hiring CPU power out to the highest bidder, just plain CPU power for the S@H project under the Team Anandtech banner - that is what I have been making donations of equipment toward. It doesn't matter that the current incarnation of S@H will be ending 'cuz the project will continue on in the next form, and TA will be represented in that project as well.

For me, it doesn't matter that S@H is no longer my primary project, this "Team Beowulf" project is for S@H and that's what I expect it to be doing; I will not ask for the crunching power of this monster to go toward ANY other project so long as there is a valid S@H project for it to work on, and neither should anyone else.

perhaps bob970 will build his own monster within a year or two... assuming money goes right, it would be a good project

Yes, it was promised to be used for S@H and what has been promised should be delivered, exceptions should only be made if everyone agrees. Personally I dont care in which project Beowulf works on, or maybe D2OL would be cool. Anyway, since networkman is against renting I think we shouldnt do it, but one important thing is: with what money will all the electricity etc. going to be paid if we arent going to rent anything.

I'm cool with that.

It'll be easier to maintain, and I can totally respect netwrokman's desire for it to be SETI only (as long as there is some form of SETI project going on).

Especially considering the amounts of effort he, lanman, engineer, shuxclams (and others) are making, I definitely tip my hat to them for dedication and hard work, and whatever they decide should go, as they're putting in the majority of effort (and $$$) as far as I can tell into getting bringing Enterprise to life.

Best of luck with the beowulf, I love reading about how things are coming together. Hope to see you guys putting out some WU's soon with this thing.

Well... i'm sorry to admit it but i have kinda been ignoring this thread since it started...... but now it has irked my intrest, and i'd like to send in a couple things....
List of what i have:
1 - 64MB PC100
1 - 32MB PC??
1 - P2 300MHz

The P2 is broken, but is fixable.... i was screwing around with it one day, playing with the heatsink, and i gouged one of the traces, i looked at it and it seems totally fixable, it still partially works... but i somehow have seemed to lock the multiplier at 2x..... i've had it running at 2x100MHz... and runs fine, but if you have some patience, it is definately fixable....

Would someone either please get in contact with me, or say forget it cause my parts arent worth the hassle

I'm cool with what the majority decides as far as projects. I'm just glad to be a part of the creation and administration.

We have a great team!!
