I guess I'll go next...

My name is Van and I'm 24 years young. I was born in Vietnam but moved to Los Angeles when I was 2 years old. I am half Chinese/Vietnamese and can also speak Chiu Chow and very, very limited Vietnamese. I currently drive a 94 Civic EX but have plans to buy a new Audi A4 Quattro . Still going to school because I've been screwing the past few years after high school ended. But will graduate in 2 years in Biotechnology. Currently going to school full time and working full time in Hollywood at a prop house as a network admin. We mainly deal with movies, television, commercials, music videos, magazine ads and all the other good stuff. *no autographs please* Been working with computers since I was 10 years old and have been completely fascinated ever since. My project of choice is SETI because I believe that Aliens exist and just need proof. My girlfriend of 4 years thinks I'm gonna go broke because I'm always thinking about building another computer so I can run SETI.

Howdy All, My name is Rick Bolkan, I'm 42 and live in Forest Grove Oregon with my Lynda and 5 kids age 3 up to 16. I'm a Water Treatment Plant Operator by trade, which enables me to spend quite a bit of time with my family. We enjoy the outdoors, and spend much of the summer months traveling/camping throughout the Pacific Northwest. I'm an avid sufer(not as much these days and lived for over a decade in Seaside Oregon (where I met my wife) getting thrashed by the cold North Pacific until I had to make a living. I'm an amateur musician (play guitar for over 30 years) and ejoy the arts, evolving from a natural media art background to a passion for digital artistry. I enjoy my computer(s), and they play a big role in our lives. We have an Isuzu Trooper SUV, and a 27' Motorhome and I commute to work 60% of the time by bicycle to try and stay in some kind of shape. I helped my Dad build a 70' Sailboat when I was in high school, and him and my Mom have lived aboard the boat in Loreto BCS Mexico(their base) for the past 2 decades, needless to say we enjoy visiting them over the gray winter this area is famous for. I've traveled to the South Pacific, New Zealand and Australia, much of the US in my life, and have friends all over the globe. We have 3 cats, 2 Fish and a dog Tyson<--named after the chicken, not the fighter LOL. Pretty much, life has been good to rbV5.....I'm just taking it all in

Greetings. I am Electrode, also known as Joe in the "real" world. I live between Grand Haven and Holland, Michigan, out in the middle of nowhere. I lead an uninteresting life, spending the majority of my day browsing the forums.

I got started with computers at the age of 4, using, and later programming, a Commodore 64. Now that was an awesome computer. I bought (well, had bought for me) my first x86 PC in late 1995. I knew very little about the hardware, and remember to this day even less, but these are the specs I DO remember:

CPU: Intel Pentium 120MHz
RAM: 16MB EDO
Video: Cirrus Logic 2MB PCI (1024x768x32@60 was really something back then)
Sound: ESS AudioDrive 1688 ISA (not PNP, jumpers aplenty!)
Optical: Acer 4X CD-ROM (still in use)
UPS: APC Back-UPS 280 (still in use)
Monitor: CTX 17"
Tape Drive: Colorado 1400 (pre-HP buyout)
Printer: HP DeskJet 660C (still in use)
Keyboard: Big IBM click-o-matic (still in use)
OS: MS-DOS 6.22 (my god, this OS is terrible! if only I knew about Linux back then!)

Brand new, the above system cost $5000. Now you could probably find it on ebay for less than $20, or maybe even free in FS/FT if you were to pick it up. Oh how times change.

It took me about a month to master MS-DOS, but it was all for nought, as I was soon forced to buy Windows 95 to make use of any halfway modern software. And I thought DOS sucked! :Q

Computer-wise, nothing worth mention occured in the time between 1996 and 2001. In May 2001, I gave Linux a try for the first time, and by December, I had fully defenestrated all computers under my control.

As for my "real" life, there isn't much to be said at all. I wake up, do a variety of things with my computers (I have 4 at the moment, one of which is a laptop), and eventually go to bed, only to repeat the cycle again tomorrow.

Although I enjoy playing games, mainly FPS's like Quake 3, I'm not very good at any of them. Unless I have an extreme ping advantage over everyone else on the server, I can expect to find myself on the bottom of the scoreboard when the fraglimit is hit. At least I don't get humiliatingly 0wn3d every time. I also used to play text-based MUD games on occasion, but not anymore.

Currently, I am running ECCp-109 on my 3 desktop systems. My P166 laptop's mediocre production is not worth the dangerous temperatures it can reach under heavy load.

I think I've said all there is to be said about me, the least interesting, but by no means the least dedicated, TeAm member.

You said a mouth full there. I remember going to the base exchange (military discount? Ya right.) and looking at the 486 DX4 100s! For only - $2100.00 Then I started thinking to myself, "Wow, thats a fast PC!!"
A friend of mine (who I gamed with all the time) bought a 16Meg SIMM for his 486 DX2 66 for $315.00!! :Q Thats insane!! (Even then that was crazy!)

I have 12 16Meg EDO SIMMs on my desk at home right now. Too bad I can't get that kind of money for them anymore! Anyone have a few spare SIMM stackers laying around?

I've got an even better story. The bank where I worked offered employees the opportunity to purchase an IBM PC-XT (I believe it was the 4.77Mhz one) with dual 5.25" 360K floppy drives, and a whopping 10M hard drive, a CGA color monitor, Epson impact printer, and software, all for around $5,500.00. And the bank offered financing.

I didn't get one, but a lady in the department did. And she financed it with a 3 year loan. So a year and a half later she is still paying out on this $5,500 (plus loan interest), and because of the newer, faster PCs that came out, the IBM XT was worth about $300.00. And she still and a year and a half to go on payments. Ouch.

I bought a 16MB module for a Pentium 100 and paid $479 from reseller! :Q A .5 MB pile of chips for my AST 286 cost me over $200. That brought me up to 1 MB! In those days you had to install individual chips on the mobo and worry about bending the pins.

Sometimes I imagine what could I buy with the money my family spent in computers...

The close to 4000 dollars my big brother spent on a EPSON AX-3 (386 SX @ 20 Mhz) :Q

The 3500 my dad spent on a EPSON ActionTower 5000 (486DX2 @ 66 Mhz) :frown:

At least I can say that I've spent close to 2000 dollars in hardware and got two >1 Ghz computers

EDIT: I almost forgot the 400 dollars for a 16 Mb stick that was used to increase the memory for the AX-3

Meant to reply to this the other day but my main machine that has my pwd on it is down w a power supply failure and I haven't had time at work the past couple days (not that I really have time now but...).

Anyways, my name is Geoff , I'm 25, and I live in northern Delawhere (I want to see a screen door factory!) but I grew up in S Jersey a few miles across from Philly. I drive a 2002 C230K Mercedes Benz but I'm really sweating the new 350Z's. . Single...no kids (knock knock). I work in DE at a large financial institution as a LAN Administrator. Our group manages +-150 NT and 2K servers mostly in DE but w boxes in various locations around the country.

Got started in the computer field when I was probably around 8 or 10. The parents bought a TI-99/4A and I started learning a little BASIC....had to love trying to save your programs on an audio tape. In 6th or 7th grade I got to play with some Trash 80's and a little more BASIC. I think I was in 8th or 9th grade when my dad bought a very out of date 8088. Needless to say we had all kinds of problems with it because he didn't know what he was doing. It annoyed the living h3ll out of me that we had to boot off floppys each time when my friends PC's didn't. Did a little research and discovered the miracle which is 'sys c:' and it was on from there. Bought a 486/33 w 4MB RAM and a 212mb hard drive and learned DOS 5-6.22 and Win 3.x by breaking it and learning how to fix it.

Skip over several years and I think I remember seeing a link on Bluesnews for SETI when it was first created. Threw it on the girlfriend and the times PC (since it was on a dorm connection). Broke up w her (the machine actually returned a w/u a month or two back =]) and stopped for a while. Created a new acct under a valid email address and started crunching like mad. Before I discovered the wonders of SETIQ and SETIDriver I remember rushing home from work somedays because I knew the machines were done w the one they had. Started using SETICache which was a maze of batch files for those that remember, then joined the team and found out about all the cool utils out there.

Ok, I rambled enough...back to work so I can get out of here on time. Everyone have a safe and happy weekend. Those who don't drink please let me know and I will be sure to pick up the slack.

My name is Will and it all started a few million years ago when some primordial ooze started to form the basic building blocks of life.......oh wait thats too far back isn't it

I am 36 and I work with a Technology solutions provider in the state of Texas that is focused on education and government. I am not married currently (nor have I been yet) but I am in a committed relationship with a wonderful woman I am something of a sports nut - I play basketball and I have been known to hit a few golf balls if someone wants to lay a little money down I like to read and I rarely find time to sleep.

I got my first computer in 1977 a TRS-80 Model I. It was a real speed demon with a Zilog Z80 Processor running at 1.77 MHz with 4K of RAM Yes loading programs off a cassette recorder was fun! I was hooked and I think I owned just about every major system produced after that in some form or another (Yes my parents were very forward thinking and supportive of my addiction even at an early age)

I have a Bachelors degree from the University of Houston and a Masters Degree from Rice University. I drive a Toyota Avalon during the week and on the weekends I will sometimes take my 1989 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet out for a spin. I am saving up for my dream car click here but it will be awhile before I take delivery on that baby

I got bit by the Seti bug back in December when I noticed all the TA Seti sigs on the forum. I joined up and have taken my addiction from about 10 WUs a day to my present 100+/day by creating a crack rack (9 nodes currently). I also do some cracking for the ECCp and DF teams

I'm Scott from New Hampshire. I'm 34 years old and bought my first house last year. The first thing I did was network the whole place with at least 2 connections in each room.

My first computer was a Commodore-64, I really wanted an adam computer but when my parents went christmas shopping all they had left was the 64, so I got that and a disk drive. Spent all day christmas typing in programs. Didn't really get to play with PC's till colege in '87 and those were 386's on a token ring network running terminal software connected to a mainframe in Chicago. Got really board learning the basics over and over in the programing major so I switched to Electronic Eng. Was fixing stereo's in lab class, got board and ran out of cash. Moved home and got a job working for a weather seal company that sells parts to GM. That was cool because of my love for cars.

I currently own my 2nd choice for a dream car, my first choice is a '70 Buick GSX 455 stage 1 but the one I have is a '87 Buick Regal Grand National coupe. Ran it at the track in stock trim at 13.1@103 in the quater.

Current PC stuff came about in 93 til then I was still going strong with my C-64. My brother bought a gateway 486-25 and we all got hooked on wolf-3d and Doom. Bought my first PC in '94 a gateway P-100 with a 1 gig HD, 16megs ram and 3 disc cd changer. Didn't take it apart till the 3year waranty was up. Then I decided to figure out how the thing worked and since that day I've built well over 300 systems for freinds family and coworkers. I build and repair PC's on a weekly basis for the fun of it and to learn more every day. One of the main reasons I found Anandtech was to help me in building and buying.

I'm also a colector of to many things. I have a Commodore SX-64 the portable computer, an Atari 2600 with about 200 carts, Atari Lynx with 40 carts, and arcade Space invaders delux, and arcade Bump 'n' Jump, full size Coke machine and a 1957 7' UP machine that takes the bottles. But by far the thing I soaked the most money in lately besides the computer is the movie collection. I have a Pioneer 1070 laser disc player, sony DVP-S560D dvd player, Pioneer VSX-608 DTS receiver, Bose 10.2 main, Bose vhs-10 center channel, and Bose 161 surround channel. With over 100 VHS, 130 LaserDisc and 250 DVD and expanding on a monthly basis.

Guess thats all I can write now. Fingers are getting cramped

I am relieved to see that I'm not the oldest TA'er, but pretty close. At 49, I pre-date computer technology, even semi-conductors. Watching Howdy-Doody on a BW television when I started school.

I have lived in Texas for the last 16 years. Still working at the nearby nuclear power plant, making sure they keep it safe while cranking out lots of electricity for my air conditioner. A long time ago, I was in the US Nuclear Navy as an Electronics Tech/Reactor Operator. It was not the worst job I ever had, but I only stayed in the Navy for 8 years, 2 months and 7 days. Learned a lot about electronics (radio, radar and control systems) but all computer knowledge started a C64. I never was creative enough to write my own programs, but frequently modified existing code to suit my needs (read that as "unlimited life" or "increased strength"). I've had at least one operational computer ever since. The total running right now would be 10 cpus of various types (that I own) but closer to 25 under my control. That means that they are crunching RC5/OGR, still my project of choice, but I did do UD-Think on a few CPUs earlier.

Previous experiences include teaching in public school (7th grade), managing a Wendys hamburger shop, foreign car mechanic specializing in MGs and Triumphs (pos, all of them), and land surveying in the summer for college money.

My wife of 27 years is still hanging in with me. We have two children. Joel is now living in an apartment in Austin, TX and supposedly attending classes at THE University of Texas. Jessie is in her last year of High School. Sorry, guys, but ViRGE has first claim. I've been teasing him with pics for over a year. My wife still teaches and is much better at it than I was, which is why I only taught little folks for one year. On the other hand, I still teach, but the average age of my students is over 60. I teach basic computer and Windows skills, Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and HTML for dummies. This is for a local college's Community Ed program. I enjoy it, plus it pays for all my toys.

I'm not a musician, and not very artistically creative. The thing that keeps me humming is that I understand technology quickly and can frequently think of new ways to use it. This seems to keep my employer happy. I love networks.

I don't care much about cars. I tend to buy a vehicle and drive it until it dies. My current victim is a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup. The tires seem to wear out, but nothing else is showing much wear. I'll probably get another 4 to 6 years out of it before I consider replacing it. I might even wash it within the next 6 months. I have a motorcycle in the garage and I ride it enough to keep the battery charged. At 500cc, it isn't very powerful, but it is water-cooled and shaft drive, and maintenance is minimal.

Current active hobbies are - editing video on my PC, mostly with Adobe Premiere, and brewing beer. I should move up to full-grain brewing soon. Also time to buy a DVD burner.

That's enough. I need to take a nap now.

Hmm, here I am in a nutshell:

My name is John and I love in the Northern VA area, right outside of Washington, DC. I'm 26 and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2000 with a BA in Political Science (go figure). If you do the math, you'll see that it took me about 6 years to graduate (*ahem* )... took a few semesters off here and there as I really didn't care for school that much.

I'm working for a company that is in the government IT resale business. I basically work on proposals for the government.... not a very fun job but it pays the bills for now. I've discovered in the past 6 months or so that I really like playing with large networks but absolutely can't get a job doing so in the current job market. I don't post much (but lurk quite a bit) as I'm usually studying for some cert or another when I'm not working my 8x5 job.

My forum name came from my first online name which was from the MSN Gaming Zone. Me and a few college friends started playing Age of Empires online back in the day. Naturally back then women liked me and I was a tad full of myself Now women don't talk to me... have to go check my deodorant or something. But please allow me my delusions of grandeur This was also about the same time that Southpark came out on Comedy Central. As my idol once said, "Follow your dreams, you can reach your goals, I'm living proof... BEEFCAKE!! BEEFCAKE!!!!!" While Beefcake was taken on MSN, BeefcakeVA was not... and my name was born

I vividly remember feeling an overwhelming sense of victory when I finally got my first Soundblaster card installed in my parents Acer 386SX back in 1988-89 and I could really hear some decent audio in the games I played. After I had discovered that you could do all kinds of things with computers it was basically all over Bought a 486DX system and eventually a P100 system from Micron and upgraded them extensively After that I built my first system (K6-200), then a K62-400 machince, and finally my Athlon 1.33 rig. Working on my Northwood rig now... there seem to be issues with Corsair XMS memory and the P4B533-V :disgust:

Anyhow, I love to crunch SETI WUs and have managed to assimilate my now ex-girlfriend (I call her to make sure she is still running it and my parents. Building a new Athlon machine for my sister in the next few months and already got her interested in SETI as well. I drop casual hints to all the other tech related people I know as well, so maybe I can recruit a new team member or two down the line.

Thxs for the great thread guys

Couldn't we just use one of the TA-Cube Drones? :Q

Close enough to a robot type for me!

Buwhahahahahhahaa!

(Speaking of TA-Cube.....anyone notice that there are Romulans, TA-Cube (borg) and The Federation.....mighty close to each other in the rankings?....the makings of a Star Trek showdown! )

Thanks everyone for sharing.....it's good to know your TeAmmates a little better!

Hey everyone,
My real name is Todd, my screen name comes from the ISP I used to work for and my gaming screen name, ICX = Internet Commerce eXchange, Ra = Sun God, and I have been using it since our Quake clan days (I removed the pipe|). I'm sure some of you really wanted to know this
! I am 35, well at least for another month...live in Knoxville, TN but was born in Louisville, KY and moved when I was 9. First got into computers back in the Trash 80 days and graduated up to the 16k TRS 80 Color Computer. I used to spend days keying in basic from a magazine called "Rainbow" just to play up, down, left, right and other games of equal video quality. Stopped playing with computers after high school and got into several bands playing guitar and then later drums. Returned to normal life I mean computing in 95 with the release of Win 95 and haven't stopped. Married for 9 years, no children and bought a house in March of this year that continues to work me to death while I remodel it.
I work for Digital Crossing as Data Center Manager. I first discovered Anandtech while building my first computer and came here along with Toms and Sharky's for the reviews. Around 1999 I got hooked on the Hot Deals forum and spend all my forum time in there. Then just this last Jan I read a post by this "Engineer" fellow talking about some race with DSLR. I had no idea what he was talking of so I jumped over to the DC forum to read. I decided to get into S&H and help out the TeAm. I did as much as I could to help and posted about 1000 posts during that race alone.
