I used to spend days keying in basic from a magazine called "Rainbow" just to play up

Do you remember..."Hot CoCo"?

I had two of the Radio Shack Color Computers...even upgraded one to 64 megs!

Oh, and see...the DSLR race did do some good...it got you here!

Nope don't remember that one Engineer. My dad and I also upgraded ours to 64 MB. I remember thinking it was real shady the way the instructions told you to solder a x-acto blade onto the motherboard to act as a jumper. Oh well it worked for a long time after the upgrade and allowed me to play pac tac and some really good (at the time) Tom Mix software games.

I really need to check this forum more often...can't believe I missed this one!

So after a half hour of reading, here's me:

My name is Scott and I live in the northern suburbs of Atlanta, GA. I'm 29 and married to my bestest friend Kelly, our third anniversary was 3 days ago, allthough we dated for 7 years before we got married . We have a daughter, McKenna, who is 5 months old.

I'm currently a database administrator at the CDC in Atlanta and manage over a terabyte of data (read, pain in my ass), before that I was programming (VBA) at the CDC in a different area.

I started out doing seti in June of 1999 and switched to UD for a while. I'm now crunching Folding @ Home but am thinking about switching a few machines back to seti.

Oh, almost forgot the requisite details that everyone else is giving:

First computer was an Atari 800xe that I learned BASIC on. Other than that, it was for games .
I drive a '02 Ford F-150 extended cab truck .

Confused... You have no taste man.... Impreza = cool , EVO = boy racer !!!!

Here goes..

I'm Colin (AKA Bingo31)..

33 (Just) and married for 3 years, 10 month old little boy called Matt.

Work as a pre-sales engineer in telecoms (broadband networks). Have 3 PCs at home, used to be No.1 at SETI (seems so long ago !!!)

I drive an Audi Quattro Coupe and a Yamaha WR400F (more fun than the most fun thing in funville)
The wife has a Ford Galaxy (we call it the battlestar)

I live in Liverpool in the UK and most people don't believe this but my mum was Paul McCartney's first girlfriend (He once mentioned her at a concert !!).

I also bear an incredible resemblance to Brad Pitt.

Col

p.s.

1 of the above lines isn't true and it ain't the one about my mum.

My name is Eric...i'm a student at the University of Central FLorida in Orlando. i'm a computer engineer. i'm the typical crazy, drugged up, drunk, promiscuous college student...j/k. i'm actually in my 5th year and hope to be graduating the end of next summer, so i'm trying to buckle down for the final heat. i am not married, nor intend to be for quite a while...i'm still way too young to settle down, but i do have a beautiful girlfriend that i think might still be around when we get out of school...that's the first time i've ever been able to say that about a girlfriend. i love to play guitar (acoustic, but i really want to have an electric too), piano, tennis, and hockey (Go Wings!!!). i drive a '95 Toyota Celica (hopefully i'll have a 911 Turbo a few years after graduation).

anyways, i got into SETI@home not long after it came into existance. i stumbled across this really cool screen saver and added it to my list of screen savers. not long after that, a friend of mine asked me if i knew what it was. i just told him it was a screen saver. he then proceeded to tell me what it really was, and from then on i ran the program 24/7 minimized. i know i haven't processed many WU's to date, but that's b/c i stopped running SETI@home shortly after i started many years back. i had CPU temperature problems for a long time, and didn't have the time to correct the problem. well finally i had time to address the problem, and my temps are suitable under a full CPU load. so i've been running SETI@home again for about a month now, and i'm racking up the WU's and the work hours.

SETI@home runs on my PIII 700E @ 1050MHz. i also run SETI on two other systems in Sarasota, FL. one is a PIII 933MHz and the other is a Celeron 600MHz...but every little bit counts.

A .5 MB pile of chips for my AST 286 cost me over $200. That brought me up to 1 MB! In those days you had to install individual chips on the mobo and worry about bending the pins.

Ah, yesssss...... I got a better deal on the 4MB for my 386-16: only $400 -- 36 manually inserted chips. I also watched Howdy Doody.... and Beany and Cecil when they were live puppets and not a cartoon. I think I may actually be older than dirt.

This thread is just Great
My name is Dave and I live about an hour NW of Toronto, Ontario. I too am a member of the Cane Brigade and still have my first computer, a VIC 20. Writing programs and waiting for the tape drive seems so long ago. My first computer game was "Pong" using a small box hooked to the TV. We then advanced to one called "Tank" and I've been hooked on shooters ever since.
I just started today in a NETwork Admin course leaving behind many years as a Truck/Coach Mechanic.
I drive a 93 Caravan, and we have a 97 Jetta and a 97 Taurus in the family as well. Married 28 years with 2 kids, daughter 24, just moved out; son 17 (that's why the van, hockey and baseball ).

Congrats to all the fabulous Milestone Acheivers especially Robar with his upcoming 100000

lets keep the train rolling ... wuu wuu

Hello,

We have someone on this team who is a little shy.

Her name is Poof and that is the sound she makes when she is darting behind bushes.
She is from Pennsylvania and can be enticed out with large hot tubs of water. :Q

She is also an expert on Unix or Unix like devices and likes informing people about Seti Queues.

Assimilator1 and her have some kind of thing going but it is hard to tell what.

(Especially since Assimilator1 already has a girlfriend who makes him late on posting
stats for HellBurner when he is on vacation.) :Q

She is very helpful and of quick wit, so if you see her hiding behind the bushes somewhere say "Hello").

I think Ray has already taken his cane and gone bushwhacking seeing if he could flush her out.
(You will probably have better luck with a hot tub Ray)

Now let's see if we can get her to come out and see if I pretty much summed it up?

As for her first computer it was probably some form of Cray. And the car she drives? It goes real fast!

And there's also a rumor that Poof is a first-class gardener, a master cook, and has a kick-butt home theatre system! :Q

I wanted to marry her but my wife put her foot down... (...really hard on my instep when I suggested it.) :Q

Poof, dear... Please come out from behind the bushes and say hello.

Same thing happened to me. Only it wasn't my foot. Let's just say I may be moving to the soprano section of choir this year. :Q

The kick-butt home theatre system isn't a rumor, I have seen pics! Lots of PC stuff laying around too! *drool*

No luck finding Poof with the cane, now where can I rent a hot tub?........

Maybe Engineer should change the title of this thread to "n/m" or "double post". That oughta get her to post something here!

I must have missed this the first time around...

I'm Kevin Matney, 31 years old, married 7 years, 2 kids (4 and 2) and one dog. I live in Denver, Colorado.

I grew up in Yorba Linda and La Habra Heights, CA (SoCal), and received a B.S. and Masters Degree from UCLA in Materials Science and Engineering. My specialty was in electronic materials - solid state physics, and, mainly, X-ray diffraction and optical reflecitivity.

I took my one and only job job right out of college, working for a company that makes X-ray diffraction equipment. I spend my work days playing with X-rays (hence my avatar) and writing Visual Basic code. I travel quite a bit, in the U.S., and back and forth between England, where my company is based. I write the code that controls our X-ray machines (moving motors and robots, etc...) and code which analyzes the X-ray data coming back. I like programming, but don't think I could do it in a business environment - I like programming as a scientist. I'm a self-taught Visual Basic programmer, but I do have Microsoft MCP certification.

My parents refused to buy me a computer, so I bought my own when I was a senior in College (a 386). I've been buying my own ever since, and I have about 10 GHz of personal computing power (I need to update my rigs page...), and about 6 GHz more computing power under my influence at work.

I'm also an avid tennis player, although my game still needs a lot of improvement. I also enjoy ATV riding (3 wheelers) but I sold my ATV while I was in college. I'm a big sports nut all around.

I'm very frugal when it comes to computers. Bang-for-the-buck is my moto!! I get $30/day stipend when I travel (in addition to food allowance) which funds my computer buying. I'm quite lucky in this regard - too bad electricity isn't free or I'd have a basement rivaling Networkman's!

-Kevin

Whoops, I see I'm not the only one missing this thread
Here goes nothing:
My name is Marcel, I'm 20 years young and live in a small village in The Netherlands.
I'm still studying in the ICT sector. Now busy with the last year of this study. Also working
on my CCNA certificate But when I'm done with this I don't think I'm going to work. There has
just been started a new study here which is called something like Bio-technical informatics.. whatever
I't will be something like designing software or hardware platforms for biological testing with genetics etc.
I still live with my parents and I'm not intended to leave very soon.
I've got a wonderfull girlfriend for the past 3,5 years, but... She's working in Germany at the moment..
6 months in a hotel in Frankfurt for her study.. Dasm, do I miss her..
Oh well, I'll survive
I drive (very often, even more then my dad and its his car. But everyone is talking about cars, so I'll behave just like the rest )
a 2001 Nissan Primera 2.0 sport+. In the US it's better known as the Infinity G20.
Just a few weeks ago I've tested its top speed. It took me far in to Germany cruising @ 137,5mph
Sounds very nice when it's doing almost 7000 rpm.
I whish it was mine...
Well, that's about it, not much but It'll do..

:Q

DASM and LOL!!!!!

Need I nef in this thread?????????

Sorry about the "delayed" appearance here. I think TA's very own geeky hot tub babe should be allowed the... ahem... privilege.

Well.. my name is Tina and like Ray and others, I'm older than dirt. Well... maybe not as much as Smokeball...

Yes, I have many many many (too many) hobbies and I also post on many forums (including Ars, BBR, & most recently GardenWeb). And my time away from here other than for work (sigh...) has been for maintaining one big hobby - my balcony garden, which has over 100 containers on a 6ft x 40ft balcony. :Q This year, I sortof went for the gusto with some tropicals that I've had to research since I have to bring them all inside this winter. Problem is, my 'puters take up alot of space and so plants and 'puters have to somehow fit in here together... :Q It will certainly be warm enough for them.

This pic doesn't do it justice since you can't see all the way to the end! :Q But I think that this one is sortof cute and shows some of the part you can't see...

I've been digging around for my first "personal" computer so I could take a pic (can't find the dasm thing... :|), but suffice it to say, it's an old Trash 80 microcolor computer with 4K of RAM, chicklet keyboard, and I still have the connectors to attach it to my handy dandy Radio Shack portable tape recorder to save programs!

I currently have 16 computers sitting in my livingroom, including 2 dualies (dual Xeon and dual XP), as well as an alpha, a sparc, a Mac, and a number of notebooks. I have routers and switches and hubs and all sorts of nonsense (and wires) here... Plus I have both a Cable and DSL connection which is interesting in itself because eventually I want to route between those 2 different networks (too much to do, so little time). Four of my machines are OC'd - an XP 1900+, a P4 1.6a, & a former P3 600@972 which I have a P3 800 in that I need to bring online, and my K6-2 500 (@505...lol). I also have a 486 DX4100 that is still cracking blocks in RC5. That was my first "intel-based" PC (not counting my Tandy 1000 TL '286 that is sitting in my closet and still works with 768K RAM and a 65MB hard card).

I think the saving grace is the Home Theater (all separates and not a Fisher or Sony system either...). The 55" TV nicely dwarfs the minitowers sitting in front of it...LOL I can't even find the friggin' picture of that.

Anyway - I play UT and have been in matches on TA's Gamebox in the past, and just wanted to remind those who like UT, that yes, I did manage to get up here so...ahem...look out.

Rowdy Ray waves furiously at Poof!

And she even left out the part about her being a *nix expert!

How can ya not fall in love with a girl that's got more PCs than you do, along with a 55" big screen TV, Cable modem AND DSL! :Q WoW!

Too bad she can't find the pic of the TV, home theatre setup, and some of the PCs. (I've been lucky enough to feast my eyes on it )

talk about major droolage! :Q
