I was just about to post this. For the curious, here's a link to the podcast where this is revealed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01qrzaZg7_g&t=54m42s

The continuing prevalence of these "always online" rumors is distressing, but as Paul points out, we don't really know what this means yet. The bit about the $99 Xbox 360 was also interesting.

Looks like they're going to try and force people to Live with that cost model. Basically the "rural yokels" and people that don't want to have a contract will have to pay for it and not get subsidized hardware.

While I really would hate to see things move to the model Microsoft is going for, I have to say it actually makes sense if they're going to subsidize the hardware costs for people. I think it'd have to be cheaper still to get me to do that though, as the Xbox hardware isn't going to be special enough to warrant that. They'd also have to offer better content value too (better game prices, maybe freebie video streaming, and stuff like that as Live's current iteration isn't worth their sub costs, unless its for a "lifetime" sub and even then its not really worth it).

If Sony prices at $399 I think they'll do well.

I wonder what Microsoft will do if their business plan turns out to be a total failure?

Also, I think we know what they should call it, or what it will probably get nicknamed: AdBox.

Interesting... consoles going the way of cell phones in that you can go cheaper if you agree to use their service.

Live's current iteration isn't worth their sub costs.

30 million subscribers says otherwise.

The subsidized route is one MS had talked about before and tried with the Xbox itself. It makes sense for people who can't afford the high initial cost of the $500 new Xbox. Sure, they end up paying more than it is worth total, but you get payments much easier on your wallet.

I did like the snip about just a media version. Like a Roku type box branded my MS. That might work as a decent HTPC if they get the supportive apps plus are more open about the media it can actually play. Too bad they scrapped it.

Something I think one of the console guys should that would take the current fad of streaming games into play, is incorporate Twitch.tv streaming into the console itself. Origin has this feature for already, so it can't be that hard.

Subs != worth. There's only that many because it's required to play online. If it wasn't, I bet there wouldn't be nearly as many, considering it doesn't offer anything else.

Except there is a free alternative. Nobody is forcing anyone to pay anything. You can choose not to subscribe to Xbox Live if you please.

And as far as offering nothing, it is clear you are either trolling or completely ignorant of the features available for consoles.

Please, tell me the free alternative to playing games online with the 360. Unless you're referring to xLink Kai.

I know what's available via Xbox Live. It's nothing of worth having to pay extra for it though.

Here, a comprehensive list. Go ahead and point out which of those Gold features are worth paying extra for.

Note that with the current "discounted with subscription" deals for 360s, you pay $15 per month for Live, for 2 years, not ~$40 per year.

So you'll pay $360 vs. ~$80 for Live to get that $200 discount.

Er, they did the subscription thing with the 360 just like last year. Its apparently actually worked even though anyone with half a brain knows its a terrible deal.

Also, um, I said to me so I could care less what the morons paying $50 a year to play the yearly iteration of Call of Duty and Madden think is good value.

Sony is making a big fuss about doing something exactly like that.

Talk about ignorant...

Poories absolutely adore pay as you go, so if MS uses that model it will get a lot of the hand to mouth people.

As a 360 owner if the next is 500 and ps4 only 400 that alone would push me over unless the MS has much better HARDWARE. During the life cycle the software can change enough that it wouldn't persuade me much I don't think.

Everything says that both systems are going to have similar hardware so no advantage there. The only advantages will be in the software and Sony already has had better exclusives for this generation so I would figure that would be the same for next as well.

PSN 100% free alternative to Xbox Live. And before you say "omg I'd have to purchase a new console" you knew well in advance of buying an Xbox you would have to pay for Xbox Live for access the multiplayer options in games.

With 75 million Xbox 360s and 70 million PS3s sold, I'd say there is probably quite a bit of overlap. And 30 million of those people choose to pay for Xbox Live. Sorry, but that is all that matters. If it isn't a value to you, don't pay for it. Fine. But to claim it has no value worth paying for is stupid considering plenty of people find value in it worth paying for.

PSN offers cross game chat? Party chat? ESPN3? WWE PPVs? UFC? Last.fm? Seems like quite a lot of extras I wouldn't mind using for a measly $4 a month.

Where in the hell in that entire argument were we discussing PSN at all? My argument from the beginning was that Xbox Live was not worth paying extra for.

They do have some stellar exclusives, however, a lot of them don't sell a ton of copies. People rave about the infamous series, but I don't think it has even hit 4 million combined for both games. And that's just one off the top of my head. Granted some of the exclusives do sell, but it seems like their numbers aren't as good as the few 360 exclusives do.

Perhaps not, but has been argued in these forums at least a hundred separate times...it is clearly the superior online platform. Some people don't see the extra $3.36 a month as too much to pay for the superior product, and therefore, it is worth it to them.

Yup I could see the subscription thing and online only thing coming. If this Xbox is going to be priced at 500 then I think Sony will price pretty close to that unless they are doing really bad and need sales.

PSN on PS4 offers all of that junk along with live gameplay streaming, instant screenshot and video sharing without impacting game performance. So...yeah

Worth the money compared to what? There is only one alternative to play console games online and that is PSN. You either pay the fee, play on PSN, or don't play at all. The features XboxLive offers, while not for everyone, is worth the price to 30 million subscribers. Your idea that they only subscribe because they don't have a choice makes little sense. They had a choice when they chose to use a console with a subscription based online service. The service was in place way before the Xbox360 was released. PSN and the PS3 are the free alternatives, if paying a whole $50 a year breaks your bank.

All of the features I listed are not offered in any single system except XboxLive.

You mean more expensive. They will make up the cost from your mandatory subscription then some.

Yeah I believe so. Pretty soon you will not just have a subscription for your cellphone but now one for your console just to play single player games. I assume to be connected online they mean connected to live.

I edited my post but I see you caught that. Someone already beat me to it with the numbers so I edited it to simply agree and quoted them instead. The current model for the cheap 360 is monthly fee of $15 not ~$40/yr. So it's $180 per year for two years.

All through different services, and even then I am not sure you can legally watch WWE or UFC events on PC yet.
