If you are buying one for the entertainment features, you are better off buying a Roku or Apple TV. There is no $60 a year charge with those for features that should be free.

I dunno...I am getting very tired of shooters based on modern military combat even battlefield even though I find it to be the best one of the bunch. Its the same way I felt about playing WWII shooters a couple of years ago. I prefer SciFi themes these days. Even something like crysis feels more fresh. This is why I have high hopes for destiny.

We need a good Unreal Tournament game. Unfortunately, people seem so set with things like load outs, I think they would be confused if they only started with some crummy, basic weapon. Although, that's kind of the fun part about playing those arena-based shooters. "Oh, crap! I ran into this guy and all I've got is the Bio Rifle!" It's also nice that the weapons feel so varied. An enemy's trying to duck behind a wall? No problem, use the Flak Cannon!

It is sad Halo is really the only arena style shooter left that is any good; and Halo 4 is terrible. =(

Personally, I'd prefer a great third person shooter that isn't filled with knee high walls. Strangely enough, the 3rd person mode 4v4 in Modern Warfare 2 has been the best times I've had in a COD game.

What's even more sad is that I don't think a real arena shooter would sell that well.

Isn't Titanfall an arena shooter? We will see if it sells highly. I'm not interested in it because of the mech combat stuff, but it looks something like a modern quake style of game.

I read this article on Ars earlier that talks about how 10% of the GPU's time (dedicated time slice) will be taken up by background OS-related processing:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/...ing-takes-up-10-percent-of-xbox-one-gpu-time/

It is sad Halo is really the only arena style shooter left that is any good; and Halo 4 is terrible. =(

I never really got into the Halo games much. Halo became popular back when I was in college, and I was already playing Unreal Tournament or Quake III with friends. Halo was definitely rather popular in the dorms though.

Personally, I'd prefer a great third person shooter that isn't filled with knee high walls. Strangely enough, the 3rd person mode 4v4 in Modern Warfare 2 has been the best times I've had in a COD game.

I've never really played much of the third-person shooters either. I did try out the Transformers game recently, and my problem with that is it just felt so slow trudging along. I'm used to not getting hit by enemies via fast-paced movement rather than cover, which doesn't work well when you're really slow.

I have been meaning to try the Spacemarine game, which I've heard is pretty good and is a third-person shooter.

What's even more sad is that I don't think a real arena shooter would sell that well.

I'm not so sure if they would either. I think people are just so used to military games with preselected weapons like Counter Strike or Call of Duty. They're fine for what they are, but when I tried Call of Duty, I just got so bored. People were fine with camping and junk, and it just bored me too much. I play arena shooters for the fast-paced, in-your-face fire fights that you get when you just happen to run into an opponent while running around. Such a rush! It reminds me a lot of random world PVP in WoW.

Isn't Titanfall an arena shooter? We will see if it sells highly. I'm not interested in it because of the mech combat stuff, but it looks something like a modern quake style of game.

Eh, at least from what I've seen, Titanfall is some weird, bastard lovechild between Call of Duty (military-style combat), Tribes (jetpacks), Mirror's Edge (parkour)... and Gundam. Don't get me wrong, I like that these ex-Infinity Ward employees are at least trying to shake up the genre a bit, but I'd still just love an arena shooter.

Oddly enough, I tried out Nexiuz, and I just didn't like it at all. I don't even remember what turned me off, but I ended up playing UT3 instead.

Geez, 10% of it's time has to be reserved? That makes the PS4 comparison even worse, unless it's reserving a ton.

Why the frak didn't Microsoft just add 50% to the GPU when they found out what PS4 was? Or hell, double it.

Cause they use the same APU and they can't just double the clock speed lol.

Because the hardware is pretty much set by the time they announced them. A slight speed bump they gave the CPU is easily done but to actually change the GPU is not something easily done.

My speculation.

This can't be good. They see that PS4 is more powerful and cross platform games will show it so they are trying their hardest to squeeze out as much hidden power as they can so when cross platform games do come out, they will not perform subpar on the Xbox and they won't be noticeably different in the IQ area.

So far they have upped the clock speed of the CPU and the GPU and now they are releasing the GPU's power that was reserved for the OS and now allocating it towards the games.

This can't be good. There is nothing I hate more than slow interfaces and or pauses to reallocate/power balance things that were poorly designed in the first place. This may be the reality.

Instead of all this magic to catch up to the PS4, maybe they should just release a new version (One.1) in a year with twice the power but the same OS and architecture so that it can play last year's games.

Better watch out what I wish for though, this thing could be come very costly to own if they go down that route.

I doubt that we will see another revision that changes the hardware significantly but I think they do regret some decisions.

when the hell is the fight stick going to be up for preorder?

I remembered about that yesterday and called my GameStop. They don't have a listing for it even. Checked amazon too. I think it will be late arrival which sucks because what happens if killer instinct just drops in popularity right before the stick releases? I would like yo have it during the height of popularity.

I'll keep checking into it if I remember to.

on the latest microsoft killer instinct stream last thursday they said that the fight stick will be ready at launch. granted, they aren't the ones making it, but they said that on stream.

not too concerned about the popularity dropping on it. the people that drop off will be the ones who sucked at it anyways who would be an easy win. if the stick did release after launch when popularity did drop, then it would be easier to find one too. if it drops after launch i probably won't get one. by that time i will have modded my current joystick to work on x1.

Maybe...we will know if we keep having to fight jago a million times (the free character). I would just like to have a stick at the game's release, maybe it will be available at launch but no pre-order. I'll tell my buddy at GS to hold me one if it comes in anyhow.

Think im gonna go XBone.

Hate the PS controllers... sure PS4 looks better but im sorry that fecking thing looks huge. I dont want to hold that.

Also, looking like XBone might have the cpu advantage. Since they overclocked to 1.75 ghz and Sony is at 1.6 ghz, and also Microsoft apparently has a hardware audio chip that will process all of the audio, further unloading the CPU whereas I believe PS4 has the CPU doing that.

Also, this is just a hunch, but Microsoft is taking a PR beating. I'm thinking they are going to reward their Xbox Live customers with some cool shit next gen, to keep them onboard and to spread positive word of mouth. Im expecting free games and DLC and all that kind of stuff.

I have one question. For the Xbox and the PS4, why is there little to no footage (direct feed video or stills) from gameplay? I still feel like I have no idea what kind of graphics these things can produce. I have seen stills from their PC ports but that is not really indicative of what it will look like on the console. Can someone link me to video or stills from BF4 on Xbone or any other game for that matter?

I honestly LOVE Halo 4 more than any other halo ever. It may be because it's the Halo I've excelled the most in though. Every other halo I was a "meh" player. This one, I can regularly rollface easily in. It's almost as if people don't understand how the boltshot works....

I doubt that we will see another revision that changes the hardware significantly but I think they do regret some decisions.

For the 10% of gamers who understand clockspeeds/hardware, the PS4 sounds better. For the REST of the gamers though who don't get that stuff (and there are TONS of them), they'll stick with the console that has the games they want or that their friends are buying. So when you think about it, MS isn't in a bad spot. Their console costs less to produce than PS4, sells at a higher price, and will most likely have similar sales (just look at PS3 vs Xbox 360).
Also, we look at resolution, I realized recently the casual gamer doesn't know SHIIIT about this. My friends bought 720p tvs in prep for these new consoles because they were big. They didn't even understand me when I was saying resolution, "Game looks good though!" is all they cared about.
I can see MS just playing their games at slightly less resolutions and maybe tweak the settings a bit to get the game looking pretty close to the PS4 equivalent.
By the time people can say "THis console is better than this one" definitely with actual game footage, most people will have made their decision, and other purchasers will be getting a console to join their friends.

Never underestimate how the casual gamer/user can and will purchase based on advertising alone and nothing to do with performance.
One example is AMD 64 Athlon vs Intel. AMD trashed Intel in performance in that era, and probably should have sold MUCH MORE CHIPS, but intel simply did some advertising (including some arab references...), and also said "the numbers are higher so it's faster!" and boom you come out ahead.

For us on a tech forum, performance matters a lot.
To a casual user though? It's about buying the thing your friends have and fitting in.

I think the problem is the games running on the hardware aren't looking that much better than current gen.

Take Killer Instinct for example, its at 720p and apart from the solid 60 fps it doesnt show me any graphical effects that the 360 couldnt do. A bit more shading here and there, much better textures, but nothing that is gonna scream "next gen" on a youtube video.

Same with Battlefield 4.

you are blind if you think ki looks like something that could be on 360. there is so much detail in that game and so much going on screen, absolutely no way ps3/360 could do it.

granted, i've seen it in person and played it, and it looks much better than videos of it do. videos don't really do it justice.
