I'm not dumping it in with them. I meant to say that I want it to play games mainly, but like netflix and that sort of stuff. I dont care about uploading, friends lists, what my friends are doing, having friend stuff show up on my screen while watching tv, etc (on either console). Sorry if that wasn't clear.

I'll admit the stuff is cool but I don't even watch cable. Only reason I have a couple channels is so that my internet is cheaper. Besides I don't even use an hd box as I don't have a huge tv and seems like Comcast did something with their Sd boxes where it looks fine to me, well for someone that rarely watches tv.

This guy on Twitter had his One shipped early by Target (much like the guy on eBay earlier today):

Lots of interesting stuff from that twitter. Games are playable once they are half downloaded, he can't hear the console over his air conditioner on low, and there is a 500mb day one patch.

All of this extra stuff is filler for me. It's nothing I'll ever realistically use.

It doesn't really sound like the Xbox One is for either of you? I don't mean it in a negative way at all, and if there are some exclusives you want, then by all means get one, but the design decisions make it pretty clear that gaming is one of its functions, not its primary focus. It is an entertainment box.

Personally I am cool with that and looking forward to getting mine in, but if gaming is #1, get a PS4.

Just read that they banned his Xbox apparently. So he will never be able to go online ? Is there a better article to read other than going through those twitter posts about what he tweeted?

According to an article I read this morning they are banning anyone with an X1 and plan to let them back online on release day. It didn't cite a particular source so take it with a grain of salt. Makes sense though with all of the video features.

I wish this was a one place breaks the street date so they all break the street date situation.

I don't see your point. Most of this stuff was on the 360 but I still had one for some time. So I don't plug my cable box in and I don't watch NFL much so now the XB1 is not the console for me? Are you sure you aren't Adam Orth or something?

This is a game console obviously since it has Killer Instinct, Forza, Dead Rising 3, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield etc. So I don't use some features...I didn't stream videos to my PS3 either but it had the functionality.

I am getting both consoles, something that I've said and I had thought was well known by the regulars. I only said that this extra stuff is filler for me. The Kinect, the TV stuff, the NFL stuff are things I won't be making much use of or using at all. Somehow that makes me and others who think as I do unworthy of an XB1 at launch or a lesser fan of the brand? All these things are added on to the console I am buying. I am not buying it to watch TV on and I am sure most of the day one adopters are buying it for gaming first as well. Whether you use the extras or not is irrelevant, this is an open discussion of what it can do and we have a few videos demonstrating the capabilities. Maybe one of these videos will change my mind on certain features but thus far it has not and I am still pretty set on never plugging in my cable box, never using the NFL app, never using kinect, and probably never renting a movie off the store. I will however be playing games on it and making use of Xbox Live for some online game features like multiplayer, game DVR etc. Ultimately this system will be sold by video game retailers and positioned in the video game department of the big box stores. I don't see it being advertised next to the Home Theater gear, but maybe in the future it could be. It remains to be seen at the present.

TLDR: We are saying that these features are nice and all but they are secondary in our minds when buying the console itself.

No need to be defensive at all, and I wouldn't call myself a regular. I have a 4000 posts... in the last 9 years because I only stop by for discussion every 6 months or so. I also didn't say it made you unworthy or a lesser fan of the brand.

It just seems clear to me, minus a few exceptions (going to buy both, have specific exclusives you want, all your friends are buying X1) that the PS4 is a better pure gaming platform and I don't necessarily see any advantages to the X1 over the PS4 if you aren't interested in any of the extra functionality. That isn't an attack on the One, I just don't necessarily see the value.

You're right but The XB1 can be for everyone provided they find games they want.

Wow. I think this Moonlightswami situation deserves more coverage. So, Target accidentally ships him (and maybe some others) an Xbox One early. He starts posting all kinds of coverage of the system online, nearly all of it positive, and generating a huge viral buzz for Microsoft. Their response? They ban his console and take down his YouTube video with a copyright claim.

Now, the ban may be temporary until launch day - I haven't found a definitive answer on that. But holy gigantic douchebags Batman! Just in case you thought Microsoft had reformed themselves after the initial DRM nonsense, here they are apparently showing their true colors again. It's not his fault that Target screwed up, he's helping their marketing effort, and they punish him for it. Screw you, Microsoft. You don't deserve our business.

Latest word is the bans are until the Media NDA lifts on the 15th... That's pretty fair IMO. If I am MS PR, I block the console until the press NDA lifts and send him a sick care package with all the games and extra accessories.

On a different note, I dig this dude's objectivity:

to be fair I can't judge because I haven't played, used, seen the PS4 for myself. If its anything like the Xbox One, no one loses.

How is it fair for Microsoft to deny him the use of a console he legally purchased? If it was me I'd return the damn thing and wash my hands of the whole thing.

This is a much more broad discussion about the rights people have with the products they own and such and there is no way either of us can change the other person's mind, but from my perspective this seems like a reasonable compromise. Block him from online functionality until everyone else that has the console is allowed to talk about it too.

Would I have gone about it differently than MS? Probably. Someone also probably got a phone call in the middle of the night saying "someone got the consoles early and is essentially doing a review of all the features on twitter, WTF do we do?"

Well someone on here I think purebeast won a ps4 through the tacobell sweepstakes and he is suppose to get it early. I wonder what Sony would do, most likely not let him update the firmware yet.

I'm suprised they banned it out of nowhere just because target messed up. Was he suppose to let it sit in his house until the 22nd?

I would not allow him to use online multiplayer but playing games should be fine. Besides he posted so many positive things. If he can get banned like this I wonder what else they can ban you for. And who knows maybe permanent bans too later. Then what will one do? It could be like a phone with a bad esn.

Winning a contest is a bit different than getting it early due to a retailer mistake. If the how long it takes for updates to download and install on the PS3 are any indication, he won't be able to download and install the update before the launch date anyways

No, I don't think they expect that, but they also hope their retailers don't screw up... and if they do, not 2 full weeks early. If it had been after the press embargo it wouldn't be nearly as big of a deal.

They can ban you from online play for anything that breaks the Xbox Live ToS. Same as the Xbox 360 and same as Sony with the PS3/PS4. Xbox 360s and PS3s were banned from online play if they were found to be modified in any way (cheaters/pirates). This was permanent and followed the console anywhere it went, if purchasing a used one it is generally smart to see if it can get on XBL/PSN prior to buying it.

It sounds like this guys console is banned until launch. He's able to play his 360 without issue so it's not him. As I'm sure they're still doing last min tweaks to the live system I'm sure they're icing the consoles out in the wild. That makes sense to me at least, you don't want to cause a launch console to be bricked due to some update, which is possible as I'm sure they think they're testing on a closed system. Once launch happens he'll be one of the first playing games as he won't need to unbox.

Went to Best Buy today and they had a Xbox One display up, running. And no controllers. WEAK.

Went to Target. Same thing. WEAK.

Who the F wants to watch demo reels? Nintendo did the same infuriating thing with the Wii U initially. I can watch videos online. Gimme a damn controller.

Neither store had a PS4. I have yet to see one in real life.

The whole Moonlightswami thing has been uh, interesting. I've been following it on GAF when he first started posting info.

Basically MS could of avoid all the shit they are getting for this if they had Live setup so that when non white listed X1's signed it it would have a screen telling them they can not use the system till Nov 22 or at least the Live/online portion. MS has the update up to unlock the system already. Honestly, to expect that some of them wouldn't get out into the wild early is just pie in the sky dream.

This situation also brought back one of the big focal points people had with MS's original vision of the X1. Trusting MS with an always online pure digital system that can be banned when they want sure as hell doesn't sit well with people and they just highlighted the issue.

All that said, the actual OS/UI stuff looked good and it is a shame MS shut this guy down. This has literally been the only positive PR MS has had all year on the X1 pretty much and they still turn it around and make it a disaster for themselves. Great that it is only a temp ban, but it shouldn't have gotten to that point to start with.
