Maybe the console versions are uncompressed to minimize the CPU penalty.

That's what I was thinking, they can't compress everything to the same level and expect the systems to uncompress it on the fly without framerate impact. I just found it strange that these games take so much HDD space. Maybe later on the tools will evolve so that developers can use different compression methods to save space.

I have no idea why the two NBA games would have such a difference in install size. Perhaps 2k14 is using much higher resolution models and textures.

I think textures and audio is the exact reason for the size discrepancy. In the videos we've seen thus far, 2K14 has a much great visual fidelity than Live 14. Textures are spot on. They also have the in-game audio half-time interviews for players, numbering around 600 according to this trailer:

I'm sure we'll see more features in a smaller footprint next year once they can take better advantage of DirectX 11.2 features and better compression.

I'm also curious as to how those with bandwidth caps will get digital games. My guess is they would just have to settle for the disc.

I'm pretty sure both xb1 and ps4 cache installs so that the hard drive is not completely eaten up.

Well, it's part of the game when watched on TV. Same as talking to the coach right an the end of the half in the NFL and asking him how he can turn things around. The fact that it's there is really cool to me, makes it seem more realistic IMO.

i know it's part of the game, and it's a terrible part of the game. hope when stern steps down the new commissioner gets rid of that stupid shit. you can tell the players and coaches hate it as well.

Nah, if you watch the video you hear stuff about how they can approach the game from a different perspective to counter something the opponent has been doing.

Really though when it comes to TV coverage they have to get certain players on TV for the fans. It's not nearly as bad as Nascar where someone just wrecks and is out of the race but gets a camera in their face with some nobody asking "what happened?" sometimes the guys wanna say "you were watching, you tell me what happened". I don't like it for that fact. When someone is losing or has lost they don't really deserve to have a microphone stuck in their face and be asked about "why did you lose?"

Man theres a huge diff between NBA 2k14 & Live in size lol.
NBA 2K14 - 43GB
NBA Live 14 - 9GB

Also KI coming in at a lowly 2.4GB seems quite small.

Live doesn't have all these extra game modes that 2K has so there's a huge difference there. GM mode, MyPlayer, the list goes on. Live doesn't even look great.

Live has been very bad in past games. Supposedly this one is better but if both games played the same I'd take the one with more game modes and better graphics.

Thanks for the clarification. It's good to see that they came to their senses on this where other companies (like SEGA) still haven't after months.

KI doesn't have any frills, but seems to have plenty of thrills. So, the download size seems fine to me. Most of the fluff in these other games is probably stuff like FMV, and I don't suspect KI to have any of that except maybe a short opening video.

I understand Microsoft's play here but the way they went about it was horrible. Banning his console seemed like a knee-jerk reaction without any thought into how it would be perceived.

All in all though, the only people raising a fit about it were people who hate the One and Microsoft already, so no biggie.

I think the XB1 is a questionable product and I think Microsoft as a corporation has been .. unwise in many areas for a long time (I deal with them daily due to work, some of their products/support are ASTONISHINGLY horrendous!), so I'm far from a Microsoft fanboy.

That said, I think although they could have put a little more thought on how to handle this situation from the get-go, I see nothing to raise a shit storm about. All will end well for that guy. Hell, his situation is actually better than the average customer to boot.

Yep.

Also worth noting : smaller game (and app) sizes can also mean better compiling. It's not a guarantee of course, but you'll often see situations where two apps/games/whatever have the same approximate content and functionality, but one will be much much smaller due to superior programming.

Compare Foxit Reader to Adobe Reader.
Compare CDBurnXP to Nero (bare install without the extra crap .. lol)

Bloatware has been massive in PC, and it's also evident in many games.

True, it doesn't *need* to be, but many devs are just lazy and wasteful. Some game sizes make zero sense. It appears that the devs working on KI are pros I'm not interested in the game even the slightest bit, but I can appreciate good work regardless.

It appears both games are the same in every way between PS4 and XB1. 1080p 60fps

Minor ball physics issues and some clipping issues distract from the visuals and a few game modes need a bit of polish. Still they call it the best Basketball game possibly of all time and a game that will visually impress your friends for sure. I expected a 9.0 but an 8.9 is a solid score and I'm glad I picked this game up.


edit: After watching the video IGN posted in full they said they played the PS4 game but not the Xbox One game. They are stamping the Xbox One name on a PS4 review. There may be differences but we will never know since they never actually play the XBox One game.

Looks to be a decent sports game. I'll probably pick this one up when it's not $60 bucks. Usually sports games have a habit of going cheap quickly but this won't be the case here since it's one of the few launch titles.
