Maybe the console versions are uncompressed to minimize the CPU penalty.
That's what I was thinking, they can't compress everything to the same level and expect the systems to uncompress it on the fly without framerate impact. I just found it strange that these games take so much HDD space. Maybe later on the tools will evolve so that developers can use different compression methods to save space.
