when i used to game on a little monitor on my coffee table, i would watch tv and game at the same time quite often. not something that is a necesity by any means, but like if i lost in sf4 and was waiting my turn again, i'd pay attention to the tv. or if there was sports on, and a big play came on, i'd pause a game and look at the tv for a little bit.

it would be cool/neat to be able to minimize the x1 game while i'm waiting in a lobby for my turn in killer instinct and be able to just browse the net or watch some tv for a few minutes.

Yeah but during the gameplay I just could not do it lol. Half time while playing a sports game? Sure.

I would actually watch a football or basketball game while playing, so it seems useful to me.

This is what will do it for me. I currently have a 32" TV on my desk and I game while watching football on Sundays. Madden is the perfect type of game to play while watching something on TV. I don't have to see every snap, but when I hear something awesome going on, I can easily jump into it and watch. Plus, having NFL Redzone is amazing. I literally watch every Football game.

Looks like a cool feature but not something I would use often. If I am playing a game I normally don't like distractions, same as if I'm working.

But if you are just hanging around in a chat lobby with friends that feature would be useful. It is neat though that they were able to do this.

Having TV playing doesn't sound like a bad idea, but it is such a small section of the screen I can't tell if it will be useful.

The biggest reason I don't watch TV at the same time is because there always ends up the time where I want to hear both the game and the show, and I hate pausing the game all the time.

The internet browser though, I can see that being useful. Get stuck in an RPG and follow the guide that is right there on your screen. Doesn't happen often, but beats having to find a laptop when it does. Usually I'll only look things up when I have a decision to make and I can only pick one, but I wonder what happens under both. I'll cheat and see what each option gives me since I already made it to that point in the game.

I don't really see anyone using this to watch TV, it's probably more intended to be able to play a game or do other stuff while at a commercial or waiting for a program to come on. At least that's how I'd probably use it.

i wonder how quickly you can swap between the snapped part and the main part. i play on a big ass screen so i could definitely see tv being something i would use up in the corner possibly and it would look just fine. granted, this is still something i doubt i'd use often at all.

I'm pretty torn.

The PS4 is CLEARLY the better gaming console.

But the One has more games I'll actually play (especially at launch) and has living room features I'll actually use.

your post makes zero sense to me.

the better gaming console, that is CLEARLY the better gaming console, has fewer good games than the other one?

A horizontal version of the snap wherein you could see the lower part of the tv broadcast where the news ticker usually is would be cool.

What is meant by that, is that the PS4 looks like it was designed for gaming. The One, looks like it was designed with a lot of things in mind.

And, simply because I've never owned a PlayStation console, the franchises I have played are on the Xbox. The launch lineup for the PS4 looks abysmal with no real must-have exclusive games. But I'm easily interested in Ryse, Forza and DR3. I had preordered a PS4 with Watch Dogs, but when it was delayed, I cancelled the preorder.

The thing is, basically, that I have zero doubt the PS4 will be the better buy in the long run. But the One seems to make more sense because I'm kind of already in a MS gaming ecosystem. And all the extra features in the One seem pretty sweet, especially being able to have it piggy back off my directv box and overlay info and snap TV to the side and still play the game, or snap over IE to read a guide or forum post or something.

It's just hard to choose, so I'll probably hold off buying anything because I can't make up my mind!

if neither have games you don't want, dont buy either.

if one has games you want, buy that console.

it really is that simple!

It's interesting that there are gamers that have spent so much energy trashing the XB1 that they don't know how to come back to neutral grounds. In order to save face they talk up one while choosing the other. The PS4 still has the hardware edge, but in recent weeks it has become apparant that the XB1, in spite of it's distinct hardware inferiority, has become the more well rounded product. Judged at released, it arguably has a stronger game catalog and has all of the HTPC bells and whistles many of us have become accustomed to.

I'm not trying to talk up the XB1 in spite of being in the XB1 forum. I'm just happy that the consoles are "finally" beginning to be judged on their combined feature sets and not based purely on clock speed and memory type.

As a side note, I'm astonished at how Sony wasted the advantage they gained after the post MS DRM XB1 PR screwup. I get that they were focusing on "core gamers", but it is odd that they would purposely leave out features that were core to the PS3. It's lunacy to not see that digital media has become the foundation of many households. People want fewer "set-top" boxes to manage, not more.

I don't understand this rationalization. So, since the Xbox One does more non-gaming stuff than the PS4, it's suddenly no longer a gaming console? IMO, the only two things the PS4 has going for it over the One is price and hardware. Everything else seems, in general (and in my opinion), to swing the One's way. That includes UI, features, launch game lineup.

Just because I can watch TV through my Xbox doesn't mean it suddenly isn't capable of playing a damn good game.

EDIT: This isn't directly in response to you, just to this general statement I've seen multiple times over the past few months.

I really dunno what core ps3 features were left out. I don't use my console to watch tv , hell I don't watch tv 90% of the time. In terms of dlna, that was added to the ps3 in an update and after people complained looks like they will be trying to work on it in the future.

If I could afford to get both systems I would because I've always wanted to play forza but I enjoy the ps games more. It depends what you want per price and what you are into.

Yep, the internet is just that way. It's like the Xbox One that got banned that guy got early. I was like 'WTF, why does this even matter?'. I know dozens and dozens of people with 360s and PS3s, want to hazard a guess as to how many stream videos over it outside of Netflix? ZERO. I had to set up and show someone Plex that had a PS3 and a PC with videos he wanted to watch. And that was an aftermarket add-in, the built-in PS3 support wasn't good enough to do the videos he wanted, and the 360 simply wasn't capable at all.

The PS3 and 360 suck balls compared to an HTPC for heavy network video (all codecs/bitrates/subtitles/etc), and the PS4 and XB1 will continue that trend in all probability. It makes no sense for them to bend over backwards to give alternatives to their paywall zones.

Well I use ps3 media server and yea only certain codecs are supported. There are many that won't be supported. I've used it a lot when I finished games I no longer needed to play. It was the only use the ps3 got if I wasn't gaming on it.

But the odd thing was that's not why I bought a ps3. I actually never knew about the streaming support being an update. I think one day I tried to stream stuff and it worked so I was like cool, but originally I didn't know about the feature being supported.

Well true, but we're also the ones in a console gaming subforum on a tech review site, complete with custom PC specs in most people's sigs. We're not joe 6-pack here.

That's one point about the XB1's snap feature that is important : it very well MAY attract non-gamers with that kind of stuff provided they market it correctly and don't make it too scary technically.

Streaming though, if you asked 1,000 random people on the street what DLNA was, what codecs were, or if they ever played videos over the network, you'd get 1,000 'wtf are you talking about?' as your responses. Perhaps other than a handful of random techy types. Sales of Roku/WD Live/etc are very weak, and even Apple with the super super super easy Apple TV (and all the brand might of Apple) can't move those to any degree.

No, it's not that it's no longer a gaming console, it just not laser focused on gaming as much as the PS4 is.

But, basically, this...

in recent weeks it has become apparant that the XB1, in spite of it's distinct hardware inferiority, has become the more well rounded product. Judged at released, it arguably has a stronger game catalog and has all of the HTPC bells and whistles many of us have become accustomed to.

I preordered the PS4 because the X1 was looking like it was heading towards disaster town., In the past couple of weeks, I've started looking more seriously at a X1. If it wasn't for Halo, Gears and Titanfall, I don't think I'd have any problem going PS4. I'm just starting to think that if I do buy a PS4, I'll regret it come this time next year. But I also believe that we'll get to a point where all the cross-platform games are better on PS4.

I can't get both, though, so...

I think the xb1 snap feature is really neat. Not something I would use a lot or unless I had a bigger tv. But they need to market it correctly. In some cases it can be useful for certain people. But like you mentioned most commoners buying consoles probably expect just a console for games.
