I agree. What the developers went through has no relevance on the review score. There's no "pity tilt" built in to the reviews. I like how frank the reviewers are being. If its no fun and does not live up to expectations then give it the appropriate score.

I blame Microsoft for not getting developers what they need in time and then expecting miracles. Sony too in some cases.

Thinking about it more and more... this entire console release (from both Microsoft and Sony) is turning out to be more about promised functionality than what's actually in the box. That makes me wonder which company is going to receive the ire when they announce that they won't be releasing one of said promised features.

Microsoft already put their foot in their mouth by showing all the TV features then saying "It only works in the following countries." Not that those countries are huge Xbox markets but still.

It's all rushed which seems strange since Sony claims to have been working on PS4 since 2007. I dunno about MS.

Well, Sony also said their PS3 was to have a 10 year life cycle. Maybe, they heard MS was coming out with a new Xbox and had to go earlier than planned?

I really don't know but look how long the PS2 was supported even through the life of the PS3. I had always assumed this is how sony does things. It all feels rushed from both sides. I guess as long as things generally work when I get it that's all that matters.

What do you consider worked on? I mean AMD had blueprinted out and had the idea of where they were going the next few iterations of video, but they had only recently purchased ATI. Things need for this, APU's, Brazos, GCN, where so far off, that they had barely been started. I could see them developing requirements and working with vendors to try to establish parts availability 5 years down the road. But I doubt anyone had a reasonable approximation of equipment till mid to late 2011. When AMD would have had their first tape outs of Jaguar cores.

That's probably the earliest that they could have had a true development platform for people to work with and make emulators for.

i don't think either ps4 or x1 feels rushed at all. all the other non-gaming features i don't really care that much about if they tack them on later. the only one that bugs me is that i can't watch 3d blurays on them.

The PDM(Playstation dynamic menu)? The Network functionality? That stuff is not specific to hardware. It feels like there are features that are supposed to be there but...aren't.

Is it confirmed that the XB1 won't do 3D for Blu-Ray too?

I'd suspect we'll see games coming for the PS3 with Sony still selling the unit on the shelves through at least Christmas 2015.

I'm wondering why MS still has the UI embargoed, but people are able to show some games. Either they are still working on getting it functional or something else is up with it. I'm glad Sony didn't go crazy with ads on the PS4, but I'm wondering if MS will allocate a lot of space to advertisements like they did on the 360.

From the videos, it looks like the UI might have a bit of lag when switching. They could be trying to get that down to as minimal as possible before they let people review it.

I can't imagine the software for normal BR playback is much different than that for 3D playback.

For the most part, outputting a 3D Blu-Ray movie requires proper EDID settings to identify the player as being capable of 3D (the PS4 definitely supports it as it also has that 3D screen size setting) and supporting the slightly different transmission format: 2x 1080p frames with a 10 vertical line separator. However, I think the problem comes in with the menus. Menus can also be in 3D, and when the menus involve a lot of BD-J elements, the player most likely has to render those. That's probably the hard part.

If I remember correctly, IGN's XBOX One review goes up tomorrow, so it's not much of a delay compared to today's release of the first round of reviews.

The lifecycle refers to when it's sold and made, not when it's the primary console. And considering that the Ps2 had a lifecycle of 12 years (last ps2 was made Jan 4 2013), it looks like the ps3 will definitely have at least a 10 year life cycle.

Does anyone know if Amazon will be opening up launch day sales at midnight on THursday (like they did with the PS4 last week)?

Secondly, any recommendations on the best store to try and score an XBOX One at launch night without preorder.

1. Don't know, but I would assume so.

2. Your best bet is to call up and try to get inventory information. Ask for a manager. Still, if its anything like the PS4 launch, there will be pockets of availability. As long as you're quick you should score one.

Check with your local GameStop. Ask them on Wednesday because they will know how many they expect to get.

Thanks. The amazon route is easiest, but I think many were taken by surprise by the PS4 launch and word is out. Still, I think a 12:01AM hit on amazon purchase would score it with overnight shipping.

I will ask my local gamestop tomorrow. I heard that gamestop will give you tickets to prepay well before midnight, where you can come back at midnight to pick it up.

What they do is have everyone line up at 6:00pm and pre-pay. If they have extra systems you may buy one at that time on a first come first served basis. People were standing in line since 3:00pm at my store for ps4 but I dont expect that demand with the xb1. Anyway you pay at 6 then get a number. They put your number on a system box and when you come back at midnight they go in numerical order. If you had number 20 you will be the 20th person to go in. You get a plain black bag and walk in, and they only let like 4-5 at a time, you line up near the back room and they call out numbers and put your system in your bag and stamp your receipt. It is very quick because everyone already paid and they aren't processing trades etc as that was taken care of at 6.

Depending on my work schedule I may be able to line up at 3 PM and wait also - thanks for the information! I don't know why the X1 wouldn't have a bigger following as IMO 360 killed everyone last generation?

1) They pissed off alot of people. Even reversing the changes, for now, people have seen the pay per view direction that MS wants to take gaming.

2) 360 dominated early on because Sony royally screwed the PS3 launch, yet despite that, came back to tie or even beat MS last generation. This time, so far, Sony did everything right out of the gate instead of catching up for 2+ years.

3) Its $100 more.

4) Its a week late.

5) Its not 1080p (or some games lower res than PS4) = "inferior" multi platform

6) Halo/GoW/CoD fatigue. These were new and groundbreaking 8 years ago...not so much now.

7) NSA, Kinect, etc conspiracy theories

Some of them are completely stupid, but these are legit reasons there MAY be less demand.

On the plus side, I see everyone who didn't get a PS4 getting an XBO just to have something.

Personally doubt it won't sell out too. There are enough NFL/UFC/Halo/CoD types who will just have to have it.

Is it really not 1080p, or is it just the initial games are not? From reviews it says NFS is 1080p on X1.

I think over time all games will be 1080p.

I think most gamers are migrating to projectors these days, where it's easier to see the difference between 720p and 1080p. So it will be a total shame and sham, if they can't maintain 1080p.
