The general consensus (i.e. guess) is that "Xbox, on" and "Xbox, off" sound too similar, so "turn" was put in to better differentiate the two.

I am pretty sure only a moron would say "xbox on" while the console is running and "xbox off" while the console was off would make just as much sense.

Which is stupid. I don't have to say "Xbox turn on"... I also am having trouble playing games. "Xbox play Fifa 14" opens the music app 100% of the time. I never want to use the music app, ever. In fact, even with it uninstalled, if goes to the "download music app" page in the store. That is stupid.

Plus... I'd rather have the "off" command to be a multiple word command, to lessen the chances of it misunderstanding, and shutting down when I don't mean it to.

hah that is true, it could just be a toggle of 1 call instead of being 2 separate distinct calls.

It brings up a prompt when you turn if off (I've had the command work, possibly by saying "Xbox turn off").

From what I've read, the command is "Xbox, go to [game name]" for games and apps. Otherwise, it thinks you're playing music. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Which makes very little sense. I don't want to "go to" anything. I am a developer, I hate goto's. >_> You play games, why would they make it not "Xbox play <game>"? I don't understand how their voice recognition is such garbage. I don't have to say "Siri, go to app clock and set an alarm for 630 AM central standard time". I can say "wake me up at 630" and be done with it...

MS is showing us why voice recognition software was terrible before Apple all over again.

What's more is you have to be pretty specific. Saying "go to dead rising" doesnt work.

Play is for the music app that's why. It is very specific on the commands. "Play disk" will bring up the music app every time but if you are on the home screen "play disk" will play the current disk in the drive.

Which is stupid. If someone says "Play Fifa 14" there is no reason it shouldn't think I am trying to listen to some music by artist "Fifa 14". It knows that is a game (because I can say "Go to Fifa 14"), and MS knows damn well the term "play" has been used for games since the invention of games.

There is no intuitive-ity in the voice commands. It feels like some garbage from the 80s. We are past that. I can say to my iPhone "give me directions to Taco Bell or call my girlfriend" and it will. For such a big feature, this is huge failure on MS' part.

Also, last night the batteries died in my controller. They lasted a weekend... Granted, I pretty much played Friday night and the entire day Saturday and Sunday.

Keep in mind that both Apple and Google do all of their voice commands through server-based processing. While Microsoft loves to tout their "cloud" everywhere, I don't know if they'd be willing to do the same thing. So, the issue is probably that they want voice commands to not take a while, and the low-power, belongs-in-a-netbook Jaguar cores aren't powerful enough to handle it.

I sure hope so. The voice stuff is pretty pathetic compared to what is offered on my iPhone. Yes, I know it doesn't do the actual processing on the phone, but 99% of people don't know that.

If MS had done that everyone would be up in arms about how its listening to them all the time and it is going to be used by the NSA...

And then they will buy it anyway. I hate that MS caters to the morons on the internet who cry about the most asinine things. What? Your email isn't secure? You mean a means of electronic communication using only the most rudimentary security that wasn't developed to be secure in any way transmitting a message over public airwaves can be read by anyone, including a government agency? Well, that sure is surprising...

Next, they're going to tell me yelling into my cellphone in public is also subject to other people hearing my conversation.

I totally agree, and I'm still sad about the loss of the Steam like functionality... oh well.

It's more for the Kinect not understanding if you said "on" or "off", not that somebody would mistake the two. When it hears "turn", it knows you said off.

Uhh... aren't you supposed to say "turn on?" So that doesn't make sense.

The xbox is only set to recognize that specific command when in the standby mode. You can't do anything else. It only understands "xbox on". When it's in the power on state, you can say "what's on <channel name>" when watching tv. So yes it can be misunderstanding on and off.

Does it understand both "xbox on" and "xbox turn on?" And what about "xbox off" versus "xbox turn off?" It's not clear to me...
